Sleep don't weep
My sweet love
Your face so wet
And your day
Is rough
So do what you must do
To find yourself
Wear another shoe
Paint my shelf
There's times that I was broke
And you stood strong
I think I've found a place where I
Sleep don't weep
My sweet love
Your face its all wet
Cause our days were rough
So do what you must do
To fill that hole
Wear another shoe
To comfort the soul
There's times that I was broke
And you stood strong
I think I've found a place where I feel I will
Sleep don't weep
My sweet love
Your face (My face)
It's all wet
Cause my day
Was rough
So do what you must do (Do what you must do)
To find yourself
Wear another shoe (Wear another shoe)
Or paint my shelf (Paint my shelf)
There's times that I was broke (Times that I was broke)
And you stood strong
I hope I find a place where I belong (Hope I find a place to)
[Repeat: x2]
Sleep don't weep
My sweet love
My face
It's so wet
Cause my day
Was rough
My sweet love
Your face so wet
And your day
Is rough
So do what you must do
To find yourself
Wear another shoe
Paint my shelf
There's times that I was broke
And you stood strong
I think I've found a place where I
Sleep don't weep
My sweet love
Your face its all wet
Cause our days were rough
So do what you must do
To fill that hole
Wear another shoe
To comfort the soul
There's times that I was broke
And you stood strong
I think I've found a place where I feel I will
Sleep don't weep
My sweet love
Your face (My face)
It's all wet
Cause my day
Was rough
So do what you must do (Do what you must do)
To find yourself
Wear another shoe (Wear another shoe)
Or paint my shelf (Paint my shelf)
There's times that I was broke (Times that I was broke)
And you stood strong
I hope I find a place where I belong (Hope I find a place to)
[Repeat: x2]
Sleep don't weep
My sweet love
My face
It's so wet
Cause my day
Was rough

But it suddenly came to my attention just the other night, when I was waiting for my boyfriend to come online to chat. I had been waiting and waiting for hours, and while staring at his profile picture I began to cry when the Scorpions' "Still Loving You" came on (one of my bf's favourite songs). After that song faded away, I was still silently crying when suddenly Damien's voice came through the headphones...
"Sleep, don't weep, my sweet love.
Your face is so wet, cuz your day was rough."
At that moment, a wave of peace rushed through me, my tears stopped, and I closed my eyes and smiled. It was so awesome how everything he sang fit perfectly. I realised that though I was missing my boyfriend terribly, I had to keep living my life.
And that, good people, is my lovely memory of "Sleep, Don't Weep". I hope Damien Rice doesn't mind if I name any sons I might have (in the faaar future) after him ;P
In one of his concerts, damien says that this song is about a boy and a girl, who after being through so much together, after doing so much damage to each other, they are over it... The guy had his rough times and the girl was with him always, and vice versa... Ironically, he says that he finally found a place where he thinks he belongs, but the girl is thinking of leaving, and a part of her wants to stay, but she knows she has to leave, and its really rough for her. So the boy tells her to just sleep, sleep with him and don't worry about anything else, that if she has to leave, so leave...
It is after a long relationship, that they got so much they lived, that even though both of them are broken, they are ok and in peace...
"so do what you must do
to find yourself
wear another's shoe
or paint my shelves"
this is repeated throughout the song and the man and woman switch places. its such a great song of nothing but love and commitment between a pair of people. this is what i get out of it. and the soft piano jazz at the end is amazing. it definetly adds so much more. the scene probably takes place in the crazy rough city maybe.

This song is definitely about forgiving and accepting what has happened/is happening. It is incredibly symbolic that it is at the end of the album, too, because acceptance is the final stage in recovery of a huge loss such as this relationship.

He knows she's going through a hard time & is trying to be there for her like she has been for him in the past but it's taking an obvious toll on his heart too
" sleep don't weep
my sweet love
my face it's all wet
'cause my day was rough"
This was just my personal take on it when i first heard it. Damien Rice is a lyrical genius.
Okay. This song makes me so terribly sad, though it is quite exquisite. To me, it begins with the singer telling his lover that he knows that she is maybe not happy in their relationship and he is telling her to take a break or do whatever she must to find herself, to be happy again. He's telling her that she shouldn't cry, just relax, he understands and everything will work out how it's supposed to. But towards the end of the song, he has cried so much himself and he is just so exhausted that he finally let's himself sleep because his days have been rough also.
I know there have been times where I have cried myself into such an exhaustion that there was absolutely nothing else in this world that I could do but sleep.
To me it is basically about a breakup process, in which the singer (Damien Rice) tries to deal emotionally with a break up, even though he still loves the girl. I was in the same situation: I tried to stay reasonable, not cling to this relationship for egoistic reasons ("your face it's all wet - and your day was rough - so do what you must do - to find yourself"), I tried to take away all the sadness of a break-up of the girl ("sleep don't weep"), I was thankful for the beautiful years we had together and for all the help she profided me throughout all the years ("there's times that i was broke - and you stood strong"), I tried to let go the girl I still loved, I wished her all the best and 'allowed her' to do everything to get over our beautiful, but not functioning relationship ("or paint my shelves") - even a new relationship ("wear another's shoe") that "comforts her sole".
Well, this is the main theme, in my opinion. But as usual with Damien, there is a second layer within this feelings. Just look at the change within the repeating phrases:
"i think i found a place - where i .."
"i think i found a place - where i feel i will.."
"i hope i find a place where i feel i belong"
For me, he knows that for his love the break up might be good... but he looses the power to be that unegoistic, to let her go. He is feeling sad, lonely and the more he things about it, he actually lost a place where he felt that he belongs. He gets to weak to tell himself that he is fine with the breakup.
So he ends up crying (my face it's all wet - 'cause my day was rough - don't weep my sweet love- my face is all wet - 'cause my days were rough")
Sry for writing that long... but I just feel so connected to this song, bringing up old memories of my relationship. :)
