Jesus Christ, that's a pretty face
The kind you'd find on someone I could save
If they don't put me away
Well, it'll be a miracle

Do you believe you're missing out
That everything good is happening somewhere else?
But with nobody in your bed
The night's hard to get through

And I will die all alone
And when I arrive, I won't know anyone

Well, Jesus Christ, I'm alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead?
Cause this problem's gonna last more than the weekend

Well, Jesus Christ, I'm not scared to die
I'm a little bit scared of what comes after
Do I get the gold chariot?
Do I float through the ceiling?

Do I divide and fall apart?
Cause my bright is to slight to hold back all my dark
And the ship went down in sight of land
And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?

I know you'll come in the night like a thief
But I've had some time alone to hone my lying technique
I know you think that I'm someone you can trust
But I'm scared I'll get scared, and I swear I'll try to nail you back up

So, do you think that we could work out a sign
So I'll know it's you and that it's over so I won't even try?

I know you'll come for the people like me
But we all got wood and nails
Tongue tied to a hating factory

But we all got wood and nails
Your tortured (and hanging) factory
Yeah, we all got wood and nails
Your tortured (and hanging) factory
Yeah, we all got wood and nails
And we sleep inside of this machine

General Comment:I think its about someone on death row or in prison. ( if they dont put me away)
No one in your bed All alone.
this problems going to last more than the weekend

Realising they have done something wrong, is of some faith and is toying with their belief, (not scared to die, just not sure what happens - asking about who he will meet after death, gold chariot)

My Interpretation:I read through some of the comments, not all so apologies if this is a repeat of someone elses.

As a person with depression, this song had a really different meaning to me then a lot of people thought it to be.

Basically the song is about someone with a really shitty life, who is probably depressed, having a conversation with "Jesus Christ" about it because he's alone and he's gotten to a place where turning to some sort of faith is the only "comfort." Whether that faith is literally the Jesus Christ from Christianity or his own "Jesus Christ."

"Do I divide and fall apart?"
He's asking if he should let all the bad in his life consume him and fall apart from life. A really big thing a lot of people suffering depression can really feel in touch with. Do you let it consume your life? Do you part from everything that "made" life for you?

"Cause my bright is to slight to hold back all my dark"
Again, something anyone with depression can relate to. He's talking about there isn't enough good stuff happening in his life or within himself to make him move on from the bad. There isn't a good enough balance between the two, and he can only pretend he's fine for so long before the "darkness" breaks though.

"And the ship went down in sight of land"
Pretty simple. He feels like he fell apart and got depression or was about to recover it right before "land". Land being where everything is better.

There's a lot of other parts I could give my explanation for but the result would be extremely long. Just, I interpret this song not as a war within someones self about religion or anything like that. It's just a kid, who is depressed, alone, confused, and has a pretty shit life talking to his "Jesus" about it all because he has no one to help him.

General Comment:I've heard of this song before... just don't remember where.

For some reason, it reminds me of Dante's Inferno... strange but the whole song just reminds me of Dante's journey...

General Comment:I actually think this song is a little blasphemous because of these lines:
"So what did you do those three days you were dead?"
"But I'm scared I'll get scared, and I swear I'll try to nail you back up"
"But we all got wood and nails"
it's kinda like he's saying if God tries to come for him, he'll crucify him again. As if the human race would just nail him back onto the cross when he comes. It seems to me that this song is questioning the presence of God and Heaven. As if the lyrics are kinda...sarcastic? I don't know..it's just the way I look at it. Either way, it's a beautiful song<3

Lyric Correction:After listening to said lyric dozens of times and seeing what makes the most sense. I am quite certain that the lyrics are, "Yeah we've got wood and nails, and we're taught to turn out hate in factories." Meaning that we all have inside of us the capability to hate (the wood and nails) and due to our cultures and/or human nature we are brought up to breed the hatred en masse (turn it out in factories). Just an opinion, don't hate.

General Comment:I posted this on Youtube, but whatever...there's a cool dualism between the sacred and the profane here, i think. on one hand, you have the sacred with the reference to jesus, and then the profane in placing details of his story into a more personal context. but, rather than the two opposing one another, as one would usually assume they should, brand new kind of allow the two to complement one another. i mean, it's been done before (see: leonard cohen), but it's still pretty damn awesome.

Also, this song sounds uncannily like Hum's "Apollo", who Brand New definitely took influence from, anyway.

General Comment:I always believed that this song was about someone struggling with the implications of human worthlessness at the core of Christianity, and trying to reconcile them with the idea that God loves human beings and has made a personal sacrifice to save them. Christianity, as I understand it, holds that all people are irredeemably sinful, and that they could never possibly get into heaven on their own -- but God sacrifices himself out of love on their behalf. If you really think about, it, though, that's kind of weird: the message is that, no matter how well you live your life, you're scum. You get God's love, but you could never deserve it.

So, you've got the narrator of the song: a profound believer who doesn't believe in *himself*. He's keenly aware of his religion's message about his sinful nature (for instance: "my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark") but also aware that God is, apparently, giving him a second chance. He's afraid of coming face-to-face with God and having to account for the fact that he's still a bad person ("I'm not scared to die -- I'm a little bit scared of what comes after"). What's more, he can't get the idea of Jesus' return out of his head: Jesus says that he'll come back subtly, and that true believers will know when it's happened. But what if the narrator's not good enough to know? What if he misses it, or worse, mistakes his Lord for an impostor and "crucifies" him all over again? These worries dominate the narrator's thoughts, and so, for all that his religion claims to offer him grace, it's only clouding his mind with pain and fear.

    General Comment:just now

I think the songs a little deeper than most think. Truthfully, I feel like this boys all over the place on this one. The first verse leads me to believe that his wife passed, he feels alone, and is worried about where she ended up (heaven or hell). He also wonders if he will be with her again one day. Wonders what will happen to him when his time comes.

The part about his blight being to slight to hold back all his dark is easier understood like this. My good isn't good enough to hold down all my evil.

This ship went down in sight of land refers back to the original tragedy(wife dying).

Im not real clear on what Thomas asking to see his hands is all about.

Well, thanks to the bible we all know he will come like a thief in the night. He seems to think he will still have time to sharpen up on his lying skills according to the line,"But Ive had sometime, O Lord, to hone my lying technique".

The next part is the tricky one. This is why its dangerous to share the total truth about your own personal relationship with the Lord. He seems to think God trusts him and he shouldn't. He's scared he would betray him if the Lord were to trust him. Then he goes on to say that he wants to work out a sign with God so he will know when it is God for sure that has come to take him home. If he has this sign, he'll "know its over and he wont even try"(try to fight it).

Pretty much the rest of the song, "I know you're coming for the people like me, We all have wood and nails and we turn out hate facories", is just him saying he knows we all are about the same. We all have free will and we all turn out sins with it.

Just my understanding of the song. Its a wonderfully executed message. Loved it.

General Comment:The lyrics at the end are wrong, it should be:

We all got wood and nails
We'll tear down that hate factory
