There is a house in New Orleans
They call the risin' sun
It's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And, God, I know I'm one
I cried to my daddy on the telephone
How long now?
Until the clouds unroll and you come down
The line went
But the shadows still remain since your descent, your descent
I cried to my daddy on the telephone
How long now?
Until the clouds unroll and you come home
The line went
But the shadows still remain since your descent, your descent
Lo-cha-hey!
The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief
How long now?
Until the weather change condemns belief
How long now?
When the night watchman lets in the thief
What's wrong now?
Boom! Cha! Hey!
The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
The saints are coming
The saints are coming
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
I say no matter how I try
I realize there's no reply
They call the risin' sun
It's been the ruin of many a poor boy

I cried to my daddy on the telephone

I think its obvious to everyone that its about Katrina.
And I hope someone else realizes that he doesn't say, "Ho, Cha Hey," but instead, "Go child, hurry".. I didn't realize it at first either, but thats definitely what he says.
U2 is the best band in the world!!!!!!!!!!
Get a life you U2 haters.....
This song should have been left to U2 because Green Day are plain shite and there is nothing special about their dumb songs.
Green Day are rock wannabees but are mediocre pop at best. They suck ballz!
U2 is the best band in the worls!!! and you U2 haters need a life. Go back to listen to "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby" albums to remind you how great U2 are
Clearly I have abandoned this thinking in favour of correcting this good person in his response.
"Green Day are rock wannabees but are mediocre pop at best. "
Of course they aren't traditional rock! They are a punk band. Please specify with your genres when insulting bands, that is one of my biggest pet peeves.
"Green Day are plain shite and there is nothing special about their dumb songs."
How many Green Day songs have you listened to? Just asking, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Also because I bet you missed the conscious homage to Petula Clark's song "Downtown" in their song "Waiting". That takes skill to pull that off. And that's intelligence, therefore disproving your notion that there is in fact "nothing special about their dumb songs."
"ballz" = balls
and you cannot assume someone else's sexuality without asking them let alone an entire group. And why would that be a bad thing if say they did? Unless your homophobic and have something against them. Which would then make you a conservative ass and someone that U2 would probably hate. Which would then pull into question your loyalty towards the band itself.
"Go back to listen to "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby" albums to remind you how great U2 are."
The Irish rock band U2 consists of twelve studio albums, nine live albums, nine compilation albums, fifty-seven singles, and eight extended plays (EPs), and you choose two... Wow that must really represent what U2 is about.
Good job, with your response. You might want to check it next time for sloppy punctuation, spelling and general assholery. Oh and can you cite any of these facts? I would like to see them.
Also in case you were wondering, I don't mind U2 or Green Day but I like all sorts of music and therefore I am neutral in the Green Day versus U2 battle going on here. But of course being the rational one, it would be rather stupid of me to say., "Hey can't we all just get along?" because that type of thinking is not welcome in a society full of binaries but feel free to battle it out, by all means.
Now back to you good person.
Focussing on the song in question, what do you think it means considering all the textual, musical, gestural and visual cues given to us within the music video (available in the bottom right corner) for this song?
"how long now Until a weather change condemns belief" - a reference to the tribulation period where "weather" and other miricles kill many of the unbelievers/belief in other than Christ.
"how long now When the nightwatchman lets in the thief" The "thief" is a reference to the "thief in the night" analagy Jesus gave about his return at an unexpected time.
"Until the clouds unroll and you come down/home" The clouds are a reference to Christ's return, and "you come home/down" is a reference to the ressurection of souls.
"daddy" might be a euphamism for God (i.e., The Father)
Overall, the song is about The End Times, the return of Christ on His cloud with his legion of angels, and the ressurrection of the souls (The Saints are Comming)
Whether I'm right or wrong, I love the music and mood of this song alot. The video is one of the best ever.
it was written by the scottish "skids" and was about one of the their friend when he decided to enlist in us army.
in this song the saints are the military that come back in usa to save the people hit by the kathrine uragan.
