Lyrics for Ain't No Reason as interpreted by alicennn

Ain't No Reason Lyrics
there ain't no reasons things are this way
its how they've always been and they intend to stay
i can't explain why we live this way
we do it everyday
preachers on the podiums speaking to saints
prophets on the sidewalks begging for change
old ladies laughing from the fire escape, cursing my name
i got a basket full of lemons and they all taste the same
a window and a pigeon with a broken wing
you can spend your whole life working for something
just to have it taken away
people walk around pushing back their desks
wearing pay checks like necklaces and bracelets
talking 'bout nothing, not thinking about their
every little heart beat, every little breath
people walk a tight rope on a razor's edge
carrying their hurt and hatred and weapons
it could be a bomb or a bullet or a pin
or a thought or a word or a sentence.
there ain't no reasons things are this way
its how they've always been and they intend to stay
i don't know why i say the things i say,
but i say them anyway.
but love will come set me free
love will come set me free
i do believe
love will come set me free
i know it will
love will come set me free
yes
prison walls still standing tall
some things never change at all
keep on building prisons,
gonna fill them all.
keep on building bombs
gonna drop them all
working your fingers bare to the bone
breaking your back, make you sell your soul
like a lung is filled with coal, suffocating slow
the wind blows wild and i may move
but politicians lie and i'm not fooled
you don't need no reason or a 3 piece suit
to argue the truth
the air on my skin and the world under my toes
Slavery stitched into the fabric of my clothes
chaos and commotion wherever i go
love, i try to follow
but love will come set me free
love will come set me free
i do believe
love will come set me free
i know it will
love will come set me free
yes
there ain't no reasons things are this way
its how they've always been and they intend to stay
i can't explain why we live this way;
we do it everyday.

Well I'm syuprised that with brett's new CD out that no one has really caught onto how great his music and lyrics are.

This song is (to me) about the power of love, not the kind of love that you have for your wife, but maybe a little? Its more of the kind of love that is universal, world peace, things of that sort.

Also to me it means that we arnt in control of what happening and it talks about how we will never know why they are the way they are.

I've been listening to brett for some time now and just a few months ago when his new CD came out I had 2 of my best friends pass away in a car accident and music was there to save me frmo myself. Brett's music especialy kept me in the right direction.

Maybe the best most down to earth song ever. Brett Dennen touchs on every thing that is wrong with people in society these days and makes you actually think about life.

there's some mistakes in the lyrics...
'speaking of saints'
'pushing back their debts'
'thinking 'bout death'
'slavery stitched'
I don't think there is need to argue a deeper meaning, as there is none- at least no huge, mind-bending metaphors.
Great song, can't get enough of it.

This song is so beautiful, every time I hear it I get chills. I have listened to it like 100 times today and every single time it is just as wonderful as the last.

I have never been touched so deeply by a song and I feel like hearing this song might make a very positive impact on my life. Things have been pretty rough in my life lately and it seems like wonderful songs like this are the only thing keeping me from falling apart.

Anyway thats my little rant, keep it real everybody. Especially Brett!

He really is way ahead of his time. It's nice owning music that sounds different everytime you hear it. That's what I get anyways.

I think he is simply saying how crap life is at the moment of writing this. Maybe he was asked by a child? "why are things so bad?" and replied "there aint no reason". But he also gives us all hope saying "i do believe, love will set me free" restoring out faith in good (love) and his appreciation for such. Ending on "we do it everyday" is kinda a little sublimibnal message as to question yourself "why" you do it everyday. x

Yeah, I feel like i just discovered an artist making music that will be important to me for a long time. I haven't heard a song from him yet that I'm not completely impressed with. Incredible lyrical ability, witty, clever, original and over a variety of subject matters. His voice is so familiar and yet so unique.

This just talks about how random is life and how people take it too seriously. Thinking too much about things that won't matter because in the end we all die.

Heard it first on Scrubs, now last night on house, such a great song and immediately after scrubs went to buy his CD. Scrubs also recently played Paolo Nutini, who is also a very good singer/songwrighter. Even if scrubs wasnt such a great show i would watch it solely because it is the reason for half of the music on my IPOD. Hope Brett hits it big, very interesting voice, and very meaningful and powerful songs

Have any of you guys listened to Tracy Chapman? For me I find great similarity in Brett and Tracy and what they say in their songs. I think if you knew where Brett was coming from (not that I know), you'd understand the meaning.

Perhaps the "Love" that will come set him free is God's Love = He's suffering greatly in this world - he sees all the hardships and wrong in this world and how transient life is. Everybody thinks that there's no reason for all of this, but God just wants you to wait patiently and his lov will come get you. He's just waiting for God to come get him.

this is a great song probably on of my top favorite songs. i think the song shows how bad the world has come to now and no one knows why all this bad has happened. people just allow all the bad to happen without putting up a fight. everyone can always fight back not only by using physical violence but with words just to start up a spark to make people aware of the things that are happening to this world. most people just care about money and making themselves rich but they do not look out for the poor who do not have any money and have to go out on the streets just to beg for a nights worth of food. with a little love in the world there will be more peace and less violence around the world

just heard this now on myspace (and heard it inadvertently on House) and it is by far my favourite song.

i can relate majorly to this - i have been diagnosed with depression and because i havent got used to my meds yet its making things worse - yesterday for example i seriously considered falling from my stairs with the reasoning that i would feel something. i NEVER think of such things.

its like the pills arent even on my side.

somehow, listening to this song makes all the mundane suffering of it all ...i cant really explain it, but this song gives it all a depth of meaning, therefore allowing me to keep going

I think that this song is a twist of hopeful pessmistic views. He points out all of the things wrong in the world: bombs, prison, backwards religion and the fact how life is about money.

He says that he "believes" love will set him free. Doesn't say that it has. So he is hoping and waiting, like the rest of us, that something will change. Hoping that the clouds will clear up, but as the word "hope" implies, he is waiting.

He’s saying that a passion is what will alleviate the tensions of life. Without a passion the weights of the world are proportionally heavier because there are no distractions, no goals. The world is not ideal and life isn’t always what you expected. But if you set a pace for yourself and appreciate what you have. If you take it, the good with the bad. And try as you might to fix the bad. You should be able to manage your existance in a fashion.

When I listen to this song I am filled with an unspeakable passion that can only be interpreted by the sounds of Dennen's music it's self. That's why I stay up late each night; this is why my repeat button has been worn away to just specks of paint. I can feel my soul cry each time I hear this song, and on some night I'm never sure if the crying will ever stop. Obviously I love this song. My favorite lyric is

“keep on building prisons,
gonna fill them all.
keep on building bombs
gonna drop them all”

I don’t think this song is pessimistic at all. When I listen I hear him say that the world/life is shit and it will always be like that, and he “can’t explain why we live this way” but with all this chaos he can still find his way out. Currently I define myself as a “pigeon with a broken wing” because I’m an artist that can’t find inspiration, but love/peace/all that good and positive stuff/ will eventually lead me out of this dark tunnel. Y’know “love will set me free”
Sorry if this is confusing, and if you disagree with me, than I’m fine with that. This is just my opinion
