Foals in winter coats
White girls of the north
File past one five and one
They are the fabled lambs of Sunday ham
The EHS norm

And they could float above the grass
In circles if they tried
A latent power I know they hide
To keep some hope alive
That a girl like I could ever try
Could ever try

So we just skirt the hallway sides
A phantom and a fly
Follow the lines and wonder why
There's no connection

A week of rolling eyes
And cheap shots from the trite
And we're off to Nemarca's porch again
Another afternoon of the goat-head tunes
And pilfered booze

We wander through her mama's house
The milk from a window lights
Family portrait circa '95
This is that foreign land with the sprayed-on tans
And it all feels fine
Be it silk or slime

So when they tap our Monday heads
To zombie-walk in our stead
This town seems hardly worth the time
And we'll no longer memorize or rhyme
Too far along in our climb
Stepping over what now towers to the sky
With no connection

So when they tap our Sunday heads
To zombie-walk in our stead
This town seems hardly worth our time
And we'll no longer memorize or rhyme
Too far along in our crime
Stepping over what now towers to the sky
With no connection

this link is to a gorgeous acoustic solo of mr. mercer delivering yet another one of his inimitable masterpieces. can any one sing such sneaky, complicated melodies (and lyrics!) with his seemingly effortless prowess? such an utterly normal looking dude, such a dense set of lyrics. such a cherished songwriter of mine. we are so lucky to have him amongst us.
my guy found this performance for me.
the first time he heard the song, years ago, he literally had to pull the car over and surrender to it, such was his astonishment....
anyone else hear the beach boys' influence in there?
    (especially on the album version.
and the drums at the beginning of the album version are both reminiscent of the BB's 'Don't Worry Baby' and 'Be my Baby' by the Ronettes.
not that any of those trainspots detract from the glory of this song.
i mean, WHO uses the word FOALS in a song??????
    james mercer, goddamn right!

General Comment:This seems like it's a boy and a girl in a school and town they do not like. They want to like each other but there is no connection. They aren't popular and kinda blend in "a phantom and a fly". They dont want to remeber the town but just to get out and start fresh

General Comment:I typed that kind of fast, so if there are any typos such as: who feel as if you, I meant 'they' and other words.

    General Comment:a contradiction
    plays throughout one part.
goes throughout one group and another
    that is like mystical repression
    the public education system norm

to be pressed against their goals
in their own round of trials
    they know they hide it
so they can keep hope for future references without being forced in the now
as girl no more than a male
and how individual treatment goes above the main nation body

but we don't care, we only go through specific parts without whole
a success fake and a real flier
we go through linear (failed) processes
without connecting systems to the individual: the 'phantom' and 'fly'

    failed tries again
just part of the main embodiment
rapport with friend, we're going to reach our similar selves
    more relax and white noise-nostalgia
stolen stuff for not succeeding--stealing reality suppressing what happens within

    we find Nemarca's stuff
the eye of success to feed
    nostalgia for her predecessors (parents)
    foreign objections with plastic feelings
but it's all good for the nostalgia-that-teaches
real or fake--it is the teacher for the individual

they tap EVERYBODY's heads OUR's in ordering commands
to walk the stead with the foals of contradictions
it's not worth it for the steads in relationship
they won't memorize what isn't needed (in reference to hiding their goals and round of trials)
too far in comparison to the 'normal climb'
they step over with precise amounts of ambiguity and hope
they have no connection--the 'Monday Heads' in relationship to the foals

    boredom with logic
to be unreal in our own personal steads
not worth it for our personal status and charisma
don't want to memorize so we don't
we create crime and it's 'too far above' those petty ideals
    stepping over
without a relationship with our selves.......for being in the end...

Now: I feel this song is about being repressed into a specific educational system. Without a definition for yourself, you are part of the 'Monday Heads' who feel as if you should go hide from yourself while suppressing those idealistic values in order to find nostalgia and an 'almost-plate' of happiness on Sunday. This will do without the educational systems forcing beliefs down your throat in order to gain status for yourself at least by committing crimes to have people feel sorry for you. They won't, however, and it will come down to the end without the connection. There is a slight connection with the foals in their stead being kind of leery in relation to Nemarca. They will follow in their footsteps as the ones who want to be in the right stead in relation (again, I know) to the students.

General Comment:This song, from the first time I heard it on the radio way back, always reminded me of a Beach Boys song. It's got a timeless feel to it that I feel is lost in today's so-called music. This is a great song, but the entire album is amazing too! Almost always listen to it when I do my hw.

General Comment:How come nobody noticed that the lyrics written in the album sleeve say "foals in winter coats," not frozen winter coats? Are they not the lyrics added by the artists? "they are the fabled lambs of Sunday ham the EHS norm..."

Other than that you all have very interesting interpretations. Much brighter than I.

General Comment:I think this song is about how teenagers just want to get out of whatever town they grew up in. They are sure that there is something better for them out there somewhere. Their hometown is the place where the singer first discovered girls, booze, and rock music, but he still feels no connection to it because he is sure that something bigger is waiting out there.
I especially like the line, "So when they tap our Sunday heads/to zombie-walk in our stead." He's saying when they graduate and move on another generation will come and do the same things they did.

General Comment:All of these people comment on this shit without having the right lyrics. It's right it the damn little book that came with the cd case. I'm sorry but it really gets annoying when you'd like to look at what other people think but then you realize they are opening their mouth without having any idea what the lyrics are to begin with.
