To me, the reference to band itself was very obvious. Who knows what will be of MCR in 10-15 years? I often hear comments about the MCR that "they'll be forgotten soon enough just like very other fad", and I think Gerard realizes this is what many people think. It's a cynical recognition and waving off of criticism of all the people who hate MCR.

i think it's an amazing song! and gerard sings it so well, like everything else!


its probably my favourite song on the black parade album, n i was really annoyed when they didnt play it at the sheffield concert in november :(

its so inspiring, n i feel i can relate to it, even though i dont really know how

some great insight here, guys...

i think its about the patient looking back on his life, and accepting everything that has happened, demons and all.

i also think it is gerard saying to all those "fans" that listen to them all night long, but still dont grasp the true meaning of the lyrics. ie- they never learned anything...

this reminds me of im not okay- the part where he says "you sing the words but don't know what it means"

I think Shaddix has it right about the first verse. I think many poems and songs get generated when a specific scene from our lives strikes a more universal theme; this one actually follows the writer's train of thought. It might also be an attempt to reach back out to the still-addicted friend across common ideological ground:

Common theme in punk music about how we're all programmed in High School to conform to corrupt social institutions; the powers that be try to harness the power of youth to prevent the death of what they created.

Meaning 1: Maybe a little real live blood-and-guts death will wake them up (as it has with the Iraq war), after all, doesn't MCR often talk about facing horrible death as a way of facing life? (So does Buddhism but their music isn't as cool)
Meaning 2: We're really all about the same thing here, can't we do it together?

Meaning 1: Shaddix pretty much had it. Some of us are familiar with these interminable conversations with addicted friends and others who are flushing their own lives down the toilet.
Meaning 2: Why is anyone else still listening to this song, still listening to it, given the inherent wrong-ness of what the movement represents?

Again, the attempt to dig the addict out coming to nothing the moment the intervener walks out of the room, whether it's one friend addicted to alcohol or a whole world addicted to conformity.

Your life is wholly meaningless and empty as long as all you ever try to do is run from it, either into the bottle or into your illusions - he's not *just* talking to Bert now, is he?

Meaning 1: Until the addict understands this, he'll never see eye to eye with his friend.
Meaning 2: Until everyone understands this, they'll never understand anything the band or the whole movement has been trying to say.

In other words, wherever you go, there you are. Many genres and generations have a song that says exactly this.

Apropos, I love MCR but have never really gotten into The Used.

i think the song is about a kid
well, almost adult, near teenage year i guess who is dying.
their now looking bak on life, all the stupid things they did.

the beggining is saying how it sucks how he is dying
but atleast the days before and everything were fun "it started with an alright scene"

the second part is a flashback of a sort
to that day
the hospitol in which he is in now
and runninf rom the cops, his "playtime"

then how he always had his crowd who listned
but noone else ver believes him
and he is wondering y it matters so much if he dies
becuz no one ever learned a goddamn thing from him, wen he really knew this

then how he is trying to tell u guys
but no one will listen
or live there life
so ur just waiting for ur hospitol stay

now how everything is amounting out to nothing
but they dont wana end up that way
he refuses to end up that way
and so far and watever
and this was his alst speech before he died

of all the songs on the black parade this is the most difficult one for me to understand completely cuz there are so many ways you can understand it, which makes it really mysterious but still really open

This song is definitely about Bert... As for the "Album Wars" (6 prison 6), it seems they both are saying they still care about each other but they are having disagreements. But through it all, out of all the songs, it seems like they just miss the shit out of each other. Very good song though.

I don't care what they say this song is about Bert, they couldn't have wrote it during the Bullet sessions because this version was wrtten within the last two years (there was an original version that they played two years ago on stage and Gerard said then that this was the first time ever) and they didn't like it so they rewrote it. I've already explained the Shut up and Play version in its section so I'm just gonna explain the appendices here. I think Gerard realized once he calmed down that Shut up and Play was very harsh so he rewrote it but it's still about bert I don't give a fuck what that dude says (I'm not a MCR fan at all, and I only like the old shit from the Used but I do spend alot of time in the music scene)

But I still don't believe that this is in no way about Bert it just fits too well. I haven't heard this song, just read the lyrics and it just feels like it. I know that Shut Up and Play was about Bert, and this is just a softer version the only part of Shut Up and Play he kept in here was the chorus. Newsflash! Bands lie in interview, all the time if something is too personal or embarrasing or they don't want certain people to read it then they lie.

I think this song is a guy looking back on his life, and how everyone always said life would be easy "it was a lie when they smiled, and said you won't feel a thing." and now he's at the end he realise he wasted his life although there were good parts of it "i hate the ending myself but it started with an alright scene". All through high school he was forced to be a part of the crowd just to be disappointed in the end and disillusioned with everything. And to me the most depressing part of the song, is the fact he realises none of this even matters anymore "Just a sad song with nothing to say". I don't know who he is singing to but whoever it is obviously dosen't see how the singer feels and although keeps listening dosen't get the message

Yeah. I think there's album wars going on between gerard and Bert at the moment. I hope they'll make it up.

And yes. It says 'You're just a sad song with nothing to say about a life long wait for a hospital stay', and bert did/does drugs a lot, and it'll end up killing him or making him ill.

It is reflecting on their friendship. They met on tour, and the first 'memory' is Gerard on stage.

And then at the end he's saying that Bert ran away. Did he run away when Gerard turned him down? (I deduced - but i could be wrong - that Bert wanted more from Gerard than just friendship and kissing and all that, and Gerard turned him down. There would be suitable reasons for that, like his girlfriend and homophobes, and so now Bert has sort of ran away from him. Yeah.)

yeah, i think this is about Bert because i read that Bert and Gerard had a falling out after Gerard became sober. So, the lyrics make sense with it... we all know that Bert does drink a lot and who knows what else and that's what it probably means by "You're just a sad song with nothing to say about a life long wait for a hospital stay" and probably the part about never learning a goddamn thing probably refers to the fact that Gerard went and got help while Bert won't go get help and how he never learned anything from Gerard trying to set a good example. I don't know, it just makes sense to me that way.. I still think it's about Bert and Gerard's falling out.

He's looking back on all of his experiences that he had in high school and it kinda touches on him dying in the hospital from cancer. The song is great one of my faves!

I think that this song is a self-reflection of one's life, in the first and third person point of view, which is caused by a near death experience.

The person is recalling specific days in his life, the first part of the song is about the day he gave up on his dream/sold them out.
"Well I was there on the day
They sold the cause for the queen"

He almost died and the experience is caused him to look back on his life. And he hates the way his life turned out.
"And when the lights all went out, we watched our lives on the screen
I hate the ending myself,
But it started with an alright scene"

Then he recalls his day in hih school and how he was treated like shit because he wasn't like everyone else.

And in the end he realizes that he is "just a sad song with nothing to say".

[Obviously I like this song, look at my username. hah] This is definitely my favorite song from the Black Parade, and possibly my favorite MCR song of all tiime. It's definitely up there. Gerard just puts so much emotion into singing it.

This song isn't about Bert.
I read in an interview that this was the first song they wrote on the album, only because they actually wrote it during the I Brought You My Bullets sessions but it didn't fit on that album or on Three Cheers. And this was all way before they even met The Used, so I doubt it's about them in any way.
I do think it is about loss of friendship. It's probably about one of Gerard's unfamous friends from high school or something. It may have been reworked with Bert (and/or, for that matter, Matt) in mind, but the original verison is actually even more bitter than the final so I don't think it was written specifically for them.

I agree that this is probably about Berty M... and with me beliveing that, the line "And as we ran from the cops we laughed so hard It would sting" makes me wanna cry a little, cause they used to be the cutest pair of BFF's, and now they're like... "rawr! i hate you!" i want the same Gerard and Bert we all had when they did "Prison" and covered "Under Preassure", not the new Gerard and Bert... with Bert cutting off his hair and dying it blonde... *coughcoughCOPYFUCKINGCATcough* and either i've been locked in a cave for a while or something, but i feel like Bert's become a bit more of an asshole lately... i say that cause of this interview i saw him in on Much Music on Monday... however, it was indeed, HILARIOUS... only cause Bert was being an asshole...

anyway, yeah, I MISS GERARD/BERT ='(

This is my favorite song ever next to I Caught Fire by The Used. The Used is my favorite band. Bert is my favorite singer. And I know this song is about Bert and Gerard. just like Pretty Handsome Awkward by The Used is about them. But the difference about those songs is that in Disenchanted. Gerard is showing he cares for Bert. But Bert doesnt care for Gerard. But its the exact opposite in Pretty Handsome Awkward, its sounds like Bert cares for Gerard, and Gerard doesnt care for Bert. I just wish they were still friends. But i will say this. I love The Used alot more than I love McR. But I agree with MCR that Bert really needs to settle down with the drinking and the drugs, cause just look at him. He's getting bigger, and he's loosing his hair and hes getting sick alot now. I dont want that to happen to him. somthing just isnt right. The Used and My Chemical Romance (especially Gerard and Bert) need to become friends again.

I know this is late, but I agree with I Dont Love You. the beginning of the song reminds me of a Disney Movie too. I dont understand, but I can see a queen from I dont remember which disney movie, and when it says we watched our lives on the screen, it just brings an image to my mind of three guys laughing at one of those old movies where they have the big roll of film on the screen from the 70s or whatever. It's a disney movie that comes to mind on that screen too.
