Lyrics for Sleep as interpreted by A Red Hotel

Sleep Lyrics
Some say now suffer all the children
And walk away a savior
Or a mad man and polluted
From gutter institutions
Don't you breathe for me
Undeserving of your sympathy
'Cause there ain't no one way
That I'm sorry for what I did

And through it all
How could you cry for me?
'Cause I don't feel bad about it
So shut your eyes
Kiss me goodbye
And sleep
Just sleep
The hardest part is letting go of
Your dreams

A drink for the horror that I'm in
For the good guys and the bad guys
For the monster that I've been
Three cheers for tyranny
Unapologetic apathy
'Cause there ain't no one way
That I'm coming back again

And through it all
How could you cry for me?
'Cause I don't feel bad about it
So shut your eyes
Kiss me goodbye
And sleep
Just sleep
The hardest parts
The awful things that
I've seen

Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep
Just sleep
(Lie down)

When the band was recording this album at The Paramour in...Los Angeles, I believe, Gerard would have these night terrors when he was trying to sleep. The band also said that they felt like dark spirits in the house were trying to stop them.
The voice at the beginning is Gerard's, discussing exaclt what would happen to him when he had the night terrors.

Night terrors makes me think of that Simpsons episode... "SNAKES!!! THE SNAKES!!!" *cough*
But yeah, I agree with katiekutthroat89, that's basically what it's about. I don't see how it fits into the whole concept of The Patient going on that journey thing, though.

it's just like in that last album, they say it's a concept album, when it's really not and they leav it up to the listeners' imaginations.

Gaz, that made me laugh really hard. Just putting that out there.

I guess I could kinda see how this would fit in with a patient journey...but...eh...it's still kinda hard. I agree with B12, and besides, I think it's kinda best for us to leave it up to our imaginations. I love the parts with Gerard talking about the night terrors (SNAKES! SNAKES! AH!) at the beginning.

You know at first I thought this song was about terrorISM- I have no clue how I got that but I did.

"And could you cry for me?
Cause I dont feel about it..."
Shivers.

The best song in the album hands down.
In a year or so they'll make a video for this song and everyone will be like WOOOAH.
We heard it first, folks. Just pay attention.

I say it's about someone who has the most terrible nightmares and in the end he's like "fuck it all I will go back to sleep and face the demons in my head".
It can also translate to the patient accepting his own death and saying goodbye to everything and everyone, to face the unknown.

First of all, I absolutely love this song. I don't really think it has to tie into the story, but I imagine the patient having those same night tremors gerard talks about having, recollections of something terrible he has done in his past, which he isn't sorry for. I imagine him looking over someone who is having trouble going to sleep, crying over this patient who is dying, perhaps his lover, and he is on this odyssey (think of it's a wonderful life or A Christmas Carol), seeing them even though they cannot see him. He is watching this person crying him/herself to sleep, telling them not to be sad for him, just go to sleep. He realizes how much he means to some people, which puts him one step closer to actually appreciating his life at the end of the journey. Again, that's just what I see in the song.

sparkly-pink-fairy: It's like a tape recording of someone saying something like:

"There's these terrorists, and it feels like someone is gripping my throat..." Repeated about four/five times

The song could relate to The Patient trying to rid his mind of all the bad things he's been talking about over the last seven songs, and that he just wants everyone to forget about him and sleep

It does also relate to Gerard's night terrors

well it relates to the story simply like this... if your in a hospitile bed dieing don't you think your gonna be having some night terrors. and the stuff in the beginning is "these terrors... tremors no more terrors ... i have these tremors no more terrors it feels like someones gripping my throat..." and then it goes on to say "sometimes i see flames and the people i love dying.."

yea i think this song sleep is an allusion to death. the lyric "the hardest part is letting go of your dreams". the last lyric to the last song, famous last words is asleep or dead. i think that the song sleep is about being dead because if your dead its like the same as sleeping, except that your "letting go of your dreams" so you dont dream anymore. its just you sleeping forever with nothing in your mind. crazy shit.

and i think the night terrors could possibly be the bad things he sees while hes dead maybe, like maybe hes in hell and sees horrible sights, or "night terrors"

I thought he was screaming "WAKE UP!" instead of "lie down" in the end. Anyways. At the beginning is an actual recording of Gerard at the Paramour and somewhere in a magazine it mentioned that at night he would stop breathing and it would feel like someone was squeezing all the air out of his lungs. I think he convulsed as well. Ignore that last one, I'm not sure of it so I probably made that up. He would have nightmares of loved ones dying.

Ok. The song meaning.

I'm thinking going to sleep and never waking up. Not death. More like a coma. And being plagued by nightmares the whole while, hence the "For the monsters that I bare". Though thats probably a very shallow interpetation. I've only listened to this song twice or so.

Greatest song on the new album, I'm guessing its about not regretting some past decisions, as vague as that sounds...

i love this song..dont know how some think it's weak. i at first didn't like it for the beginning, but now i know what it says adn means i love it. i think it's one of the golden ones on the album. im not so big on the new slow songs like cancer and i dont love you, still really good but i think there are much better songs on teh album. this song is like nothing they're ever done before, which i love. definately about the beforementioned nightmares and such..now the connection to teh patient...well this journey through the land of the dead itself appears alot like a nightmare, it could possibly be the patient convincing himself that he's not dead, just asleep. adn there is mentioning of asleep or awake in famous last words too.
