Goodbye to sleep
I think that staying up is exactly what I need
Take apart your head
Take apart the counting,
And the flock it has bred.

Goodbye to love,
Its right, I'll push you up,
Right against the wall
Take apart your head (right against the wall)
Chew it up and swallow it

But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right

Goodbye, you liar
Well, you sipped from the cup
But you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head (I wish I could inspire)
Take apart the demon, in the attic, to the bed.

(Goodbye my love)
But I'll bet that you're running
(Goodbye my love)
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
(Goodbye my love)
I can't shake this little feeling
(Goodbye my love)
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right (I'm on my own)
I never say anything right, right, right (I'm on my own)

Take me, take me, back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
I don't mind you running through my skin
Oh, let the bad parts in, the bad parts in

When we were made, we were set apart
Life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some Saint got the job,
Of writing down my sins
The storm is coming;
The storm is coming in!

But I'll bet that you're running
I've been sleeping in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
I never did anything right (I'm on my own)
I never did anything right (I'm on my own)

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much, that it hurts my head
Say, I don't mind you under my skin
Oh, let the bad parts in, the bad parts in

You're my favorite bird, and when you sing
I really do wish you would wear my ring
No matter what they say, I am still the king
Now, the storm is coming;
The storm is coming in.

General Comment:I'm pretty sure this song is about his relationship with Sherri DuPree-Bemis but I could be wrong. Apparently he asked her to marry her but she rejected him...

General Comment:I like the idea of incline over alkaline. Falling asleep on the incline to me represents a long journey up a hill and falling asleep is basically say fuck you to the journey

My Interpretation:This song is amazing and likely about so many different things. I have noticed what may be references to the movie 'Full Metal Jacket', which is relevant since that movie is about the duality of man --- similar to the themes found in the devil and god are raging inside me.

At one point during the movie Pvt. Leonard 'Gomer Pyle' Lawrence says "I never do anything right". The marines are taught to love their rifle and sleep with it. Of course Pyle ends up shooting the drill sergeant and himself with his beloved rifle:

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
I don't mind you under my skin
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in

The other soldiers punish Pyle for falling behind in training by filling pillow cases full of soap and beating him with them while he sleeps. Wikipedia: "Soaps for cleansing are obtained by treating vegetable or animal oils and fats with a strongly alkaline solution."

I've been sleeping in the alkaline.

My Opinion:I didn't feel like reading through all those pages of meaning. Kind of crazy to see all that being put down about the song, but cool. I've heard Jesse sing both 'alkaline' and 'incline' live. As for the bird part. The line doesn't make sense as "You're my favorite bird, and when you sing" It seems incomplete and doesn't flow into the next line properly. Honestly, after much listening it sounds like "You're my favorite burden, when you sing". It would make sense if this song was about his relationship with the chick from Eisley. Let's be real, most of this album is about that and death. He was so down and out about the whole thing it would make sense.

General Comment:It REALLY bugs the shit out of me when people reference every fucking piece of lyrical creation to the bible. The Bible is not the only goddamn book out there, pick up another book. Unless there isn't public libraries around your area there shouldn't be any reason why you should constantly bring up whenever a topic is "tender" or "a bit spiritual"....

To me this song, is about the personal anguish and struggles a person endures to find the better of themselves to give to their love one.
"Goodbye to Sleep" - I got some thinking to do. I know I need to change, but I quite find out how yet. This staying is exactly what I need.

"Take apart your head, Take apart the counting and the flock it has bred" - Following the same line of sleepless and restless night. Trying to figuer out the pieces and put it together. Where do I wanna go from here?

"Took apart your head and swallow it" - It's more of a feeling his trying to describe. Like getting reading of your anguish, finding a way to clear your head, because some thoughts are gnawing and eating you up which has brought on this restlessness.

"Goodbye you liar" - He's talking to himself. I'm going to be honest to myself.

"You sip from a cup but you don't own up to anything" - Everything you pretend out there in the world, there act doesn't measure who you really are a person. All along you've only deceive yourself in your putting up these acts that had for so long clogged your ability to do something good.

"I can't shake this little feeling" - This is something I need to figuere out now, it has been bothering me for a long time.

    General Comment:Goodbye to love
Well it's a ride that will push you up
    Right against the wall
[Does everybody really need to know everyone?]
    Take apart your head
[Do you really think you're really a part of it?]
    Right against the wall
[And is your army really one of some thousands?]
Chew it up and swallow it
[And will you declare war on the loony bin?]

You're blowing by but you're running
Our feet slip in the alkalide
I can't shake this little feeling
    I'll never get anything right

    Goodbye you liar
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
And you think you will inspire
[When I arrive will God be waiting and pacing around his throne?]
    Take apart your head
[Will he feel a little Old Testament?]
And I wish I could inspire
[And will he celebrate with fire and brimstone]
Take apart the demon, up in the attic to the left
[Yeah, I admit, I am afraid of the reckoning]

    [Goodbye my love]
You're blowing by but you're running
[Wait right here, and they will come and pick you up]
    Let's sleep in the alkalide
[I've been on pause, but I'm shaking off the rust]
I can't shake this tiny feeling
[I've lost my charge, I've been degaussed]
    I'll never get anything right

[I'm on my own, I've been degaussed]
    I'll never say anything right
[I'm on my own, I've been degaussed]
    I'll never say anything right
[I'm on my own, I've been degaussed]
    I'll never say anything right
    I'm on my own

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Say, "I don't mind you under my skin.
I'll let the bad parts in, yeah the bad parts in"
Well when we were made we were set apart
But life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
    The storm is coming
    The storm is coming in

You're blowing by but you run out
Our feet are slipping in alkalide
I can't shake this little feeling
    I never did anything right

    I'm on my own
    I never did anything right
    I'm on my own

General Comment:does anyone see a slight connection to Donnie Darko? I'll admit, it was the line "the storm is coming" that struck a chord

A storm is coming, Frank says
A storm that will swallow the children
And I will deliver them from the kingdom of pain
I will deliver the children back the their doorsteps
And send the monsters back to the underground
I'll send them back to a place where no-one else can see them
    Except for me
    Because I am Donnie Darko.

General Comment:Isn't it funny as how you experience more things in life your perspective on what a song is about can change?

I believe this is a song about two people (a guy and girl) who have had instant chemistry right off the back (they're like two magnets). But something happened that repelled her away from him.

    Goodbye to sleep
I think this staying up is exactly what I need
    Well take apart your head
Take apart the counting, and the flock it has bred

    * They're both still thinking about eachother. He is losing sleep trying to figure out where he went wrong, and how he can make it right (trying to figure out what she needs, "taking apart" her head). In the mean time, she's counting sheep, hoping he'll realize what to do.

    Goodbye to love
Well it's a ride that will push you up
    Right against the wall
    Take apart your head
    Right against the wall
Chew it up and swallow it

He hurt her, badly. Now she won't let her guard down.

You're brought back but you're running
I fell asleep in the alkaline
I can't shake this little feeling
    I'll never get anything right

She's still in love with him, and wants to let her guard down but she can't trust him because he hasn't changed. He wants to change, but he's holding himself back and can't do it yet for whatever reason.

    Goodbye you liar
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
    Take apart your head
(And I wish I could inspire)
Take apart the demon, up in the attic to the left.

She claimed to love him, but she left him. And she won't open again. She took his love, and left him with nothing. (Sipped from the cup). Now she thinks that because she took his love and left him that will be good enough to make him change (inspire). She thinks too much, that's the demon in the attic.

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Say, "I don't mind you under my skin.
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in"
Well when we were made we were set apart
But life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
    The storm is coming
    The storm is coming in

They love eachother so much, even though they are bad for eachother. They can't seem to fight the physical attraction. They're soul mates. They were set apart, and now they've found eachother.

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
I don't mind you under my skin
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in
Well you're my favorite bird and when you sing
I really do wish that you'd wear my ring
No matter what they say, I am still the king
And now the storm is coming
    The storm is coming in

& i'm too lazy too finish this comment. hahahaa at least i admit it.

    Goodbye you liar
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
    Take apart your head

General Comment:well i know i'm late for this but looking through the earlier comments i realized that the simplest solution to the lyric debate would be go on their official webset fightoffyourdemons.com because until recently they had all their lyrics to their albums including the devil and god are raging inside me, sadly now it is under construction and will only take you to their merch and show the album cover of their newest album, Daisy. oh well i love brand new and i think that not knowing their lyrics fully are part of the fusturation and fascination with the band. either way i consider them to have the most influential lyrics i've ever heard in a band. This song especially.
