it's his first love, and because it's his first, he knows 'love' is a major thing, it's life changing. that thought scares him, so he tries to reassure himself by saying 'its only love'
then the 'let's get married' bit, I think that's where all the emotions suddenly hit him, and he plans on being with her for a long time and 'tick the boxes' of all the things he wants from a marriage.

I'm really not sure what any of it means and in a way it's the better for it, love is very confusing afterall
i think it's meaning is self explanatory, first love, and how you think it will last forever but still the confusion, self doubt and vulnerability that it brings. One of the few songs i can listen to over and over to, and have done ever since i first heard it.
He's made a mistake and he thinks that she won't take him back but he wants to make sure, he wants to see how she's feeling and he's prepared to own up to what he's done. I think it's a song that's at a critical point in a relationship. He's saying to the girl, if you won't take me back I'll be fine(even though he may not be), he doesn't want her to think he'll be hurt. "It's only love" He's acting like he doesn't care because he doesn't want to admit his weakness but he does, because he asks her these questions, he's testing the water, it's like he's asking for her back but doesn't want to look pathetic so say's he'll be just fine if she won't take him back.
Make sense, no? Just my idea.

I just always thought it was 'First love, lost love'
And then the reason why he sings 'only love, it's only love' is because he still loves his first love but it all went wrong, so by saying it's only he's trying to convince himself and at the same time I agree that it sounds sarcastic.

The whole "first love, last love" thing is great, I can totally relate to that.
I don't know if "do you miss home?" is referencing to how being in love feels, like being dead distant and having no other care, and asking if they feel the same. And asking "are you symmetrical?" sees to mean like are you the same all over, have you got two sides to you?
I dunno, but it's beautiful either way.
i think its written from an outsider's perspective because i doubt someone in love would see it this way.
