Famous Last Words Lyrics
Now I know
That I can't make you stay
But where's your heart?
But where's your heart?
But where's your...

And I know
There's nothing I could say
To change that part
To change that part
To change...

So many
Bright lights, they cast a shadow
But can I speak?
Well is it hard understanding
I'm incomplete
A life that's so demanding
I get so weak
A love that's so demanding
I can't speak

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

Can you see
My eyes are shining bright
Cause I'm out here
On the other side
Of a jet black hotel mirror
And I'm so weak
Is it hard understanding
I'm incomplete
A love that's so demanding
I get weak

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

These bright lights have always blinded me
These bright lights have always blinded me
I say

I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I'd never speak
Awake and unafraid
Asleep or dead

(How can I see, I see you lying) 'Cause I see you lying next to me
(How can I see, I see you lying) With words I thought I'd never speak
(How can I see, I see you lying) Awake and unafraid
(How can I see, I see you lying) Asleep or dead

'Cause I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I'd never speak
Awake and unafraid
Asleep or dead

'Cause I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I'd never speak
Awake and unafraid
Asleep or dead

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
(Or dead)
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home
(Or dead)
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
(Or dead)
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home
(Or dead)
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
(Or dead)
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

This song reminds me a lot of their old music. They seem to like to end on a harsher note. This song reminds me of him almost dying, and he's telling his girlfriend (fiance possibly?) that "I know I can't make you stay with me, but where's your heart? I'm dying and you don't care, I thought we were in love." other than that, I agree with raine697.

i believe that the band have left the conclusion of the story open for interpretation - does he die, or does he live 'asleep or dead' not sure where but i think his lover or wife may have joined him in teh afterlife, adn thus he says 'honey if u stay i'll be forgiving' adn he wants to go home - but home to life or his new accepted home of hell? we must decide..i haven't listened to and interpreted teh whole album enough to come to my own personal conclusion.

Heres my inerpretation of this song. I took the lyrics directly from the Albums book.

"Now I know that I cant make you stay
But where's your heart?"

He's lying on his deathbed, the final hour is drawing near, and hes saying his last words to his lover. Hes admitting that he cant make her stay with him until the very end,but hes asking where her "heart" is, meaning strength and compassion. It would take both to stay with the one you love as you watch the life fade from their eyes.

"And I know there's nothing I could say
To change that part"

The part of their story, their past, the hard times theyve had.

"So many bright lights that cast a shadow
But can I speak "

Without evil there can be no good, and without shadow there is no light. The Patient is stating that with so much good in the world, there will inevitably be some troubled dark spots, and he is asking if its ok to talk about them.

"Well, is it hard understanding?
I'm incomplete
A life that's so demanding
I get so weak
A love that's so demanding
I cant speak"

He's explaining that his soul is not perfect (like any humans) and that he always felt drained by life, and drained by love. Hes almost apologizing...

"I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey, if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say could stop me going home"

Its ironic that the Patient is the one whos about to die, yet hes the one belting out that he isnt afraid to keep living, showing that the band believes death ot be just another part of a longer life, and that the Patient has learned in this life that he has the strength to see whats on the other side of death. At the same time hes telling his love to stay in this world, and not to kill herself, because if she lives a happy life then the Patient will feel like his life had some purpose to it, to help strengthen his love.

"Can you see my eyes are shining bright
cuz i'm out here on the other side
Of a jet black hotel mirror "

Every time the lover looks in a mirror (I picture those black tinted mirrors you sometimes find in hotel lobbies) she would see a distorted reflection of herself, and at the same time should feel the Patient smiling back at her from the other side of death, and his eyes are shining because hes proud and happy that she is carrying on.

"These bright lights have always blinded me "

The Patient has been blind his whole life, not realizing that the good things in life were the cause. Now his eyes have adjusted to the light and he can see that life is a beautiful thing.

"I see you lying next to me with words I thought I'd never speak
Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead "

This shows that in the end his lover decided to stay with him until the end, laying beside him in his final moments, however he wakes up and realizes that he has no idea if he died (and has gone to heaven) or if he simply fell alseep and is going to be ok after all. Whatever the case, he has learned from it all and decides to take the opportunity to tell her that he loves her, and says all the things he always meant to say but never did.

This song is brilliant, I get a shiver down my spine everytime I hear it...good job MCR! You've earned a place in my heart forever!

I've been thinking about the end verse some more...

I now believe that "Awake and unafraid" refers to his waking life, that he has overcome his fear of existence and is ready to face what comes. "Asleep or dead" now tells me that he doesnt think of death as a scary nemesis, its the same as sleeping, and he will remain unafraid regardless.

my totally off the wall view of this song has nothing to do with the patient , here goes! Now I know
That I can’t make you stay
But where’s your heart

someone he loves is dying maybe of an overdose but there is no point in trying to stop them because they really dont want to live.

Well is it hard understanding
I’m incomplete
The life that’s so demanding
I get so weak
And all their souls are burning
I can’t speak

he feels inadaquit to deal with this, hes exausted from trying to protect this person.because this person killed themselves they will go to hell, he's distraught.

can you see, my eyes are shining bright
cause im out here on the other side, of a jet black hotel mirror.

after shes dead he talks to her when hes lonley telling her that hes ok but that he misses her..

am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay
I’ll be forgiven

he will manage to keep on going but he needs forgiveness for letting her die

see you lying next to me
With words I thought I’d never speak
Awake and unfraid
Asleep or dead

at night he sees her lying beside him he tells her the hardest words to say I LOVE YOU !

please excuse my spelling and typing

hmm... personally to me this song makes me think of Gerard coming to a complete closure with his substance addictions...

He's been pretty proud of himself over this album, he said it's the first one where he's been completely sober.
Metaphor with people, maybe?

I have not made up my mind on this one but here is a good arguement to be made — they are both dead.... it might even be argued that he killed her. If you scan on back to Sharpest Lives there is a metaphorical refrence to Romeo and Juliet. Also in WTTBlackParade "Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me, and other times I think that I should go." This seems to refrence "her" as being dead already. I think this song is him going to heaven and waking up with her there.

TrailBearGA, that's what I get out of the song as well. I get that he killed her out of the line "honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven."

I agree with ghost in the smow, except I'd reverse it. This is the pateints loved one talking to him as he dies. and I imagine the album as being back and forward between the 2. The Patient is dieing on the way to the hospitol and having these goofy hillusinations while his loved one who found him is trying to accept his dieing (AKA I don't love you/ Famous last words a combo of both of them in disenchanted), Then The patient is in the rest more or less.
I'll have to think about this a little longer

i think this song is about "the patient"'s mom dying...u see...my idea about teh album goes like this. The album goes in reverse...from his death and all the way back to his early teenagers years...so it goes something like....

Track. 1- HE DIES
Track. 2 - hes gets the nes that hes dying in two weeks
Track. 3- While hes on the hopsital bed...feeling sick..he starts wondering about the people he loves
Track. 4- Nothing to do with the album
Track. 5- Hes on the virge of death...and remembering his father....I WILL FINISH THIS LATER...

this song is so damn motivational, i absolutely love it. it gives me goosebumps.

this song basically gives me the feel that you've found that one moment where you see what life is. that you're bound feeling weak and incomplete at times, but you have to press on and be unafraid of life ahead.

absolutely amazing song, great finale to the album.

Famous Last Words is the best song in the history of music.
Truthfully, this song is a miracle. I should know.
It saved my life from confusion and despair.

Thank-you, MCR.

This is my opinion...
In the chorus when Gerard says:
"Nothing you can say can stop me going home"
It was as if he was saying no matter how much you use your words to hurt me, confuse me, and destroy me, you can't stop me from going to heaven (home).

gerard dedicated this song to keith.
who he explained was the person who helped him with his addiction; therefore i'm sure it has to do with his addiction. it fits.

it's a song that deals with dedication and will.
it illustrates being strong enough to have the courage to make a conscious and decisive effort to change a destructive aspects of ones life. by the end of the song, it seems that the outcome is that of a rebirth, perhaps in an emotional sense.

While recording The Black Parade, Mikey became very depressed. at night, he would sleep on the floor of Gerard's room. Then, he got so depressed that he had to temporarily leave the band. It is possible that this song was written about mikey.

"now i know that I can't make you stay"
(he knows that mikey needs to deal with this, and can't make him stay)
"now i know there's nothing i could say to change that part"
(again, he understands what mikey is going through)
"So many bright lights that cast a shadow"
(there are a lot of things in their world that look good, but really arent)
"Is it hard understanding; im incomplete"
(when mikey left the band, they found it very difficult to play music without him)
"A life that's so demanding, I get so weak"
(when he left, they said that they became like lifeless ghosts, just wandering the house)

now the refrain looks like it could be from mikey's point of view. it says that he thinks that if he leaves the band, he will be able to live on his own. then gerard says that if mikey stays, then everything will be forgiven, but mikey says that he just can't stay.

"these bright lights are always blinding me"
(this could also be from mikey's POV. there is a quote of him that says something along the lines of being on stage, and he just got panic attacks and didn't like what he was doing.)

"I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I’d never speak
Awake and unfraid
Asleep or dead"

(this is from gerard's POV. he would see mikey laying on his floor, and wonder how he was doing.)

mychemrom4nce: thanks for mentioning that part a/b mikey. that's what i've been thinking ever since i found out about the troubles that they (espec. mikey) had during the recording process.

i felt like it was a slap in the face to all of the trials that beset them while they were recording. kind of saying "it doesn't matter what we have to go through to get this record out, we're going to do it and WE'RE gonna love it and hopefully you'll love it too. but if you don't love it, we'll just go it alone."

but how could you not love it?

I agree with a lot of what some people have said about this song.
I personally think the song can be taken two different ways.

The first is of a suicidal person in general, and the second is of the 'patient' who is the running theme in this album.

For the suicidal person, i think this song is him kind of looking back in retrospect.

'Now I know
That I can’t make you stay
But where’s your heart
But where’s your heart
But where’s your...

I know
There’s nothing I could say
To change that part
To change that part
To change...'

I think that's from the perspective of his love/family/friends, in that they're absolutely distraught that he'd commit suicide and wish he'd have stayed.

'So many
Bright lights been cast a shadow
But can I speak?
Well is it hard understanding
I’m incomplete
The life that’s so demanding
I get so weak
And all their souls are burning
I can’t speak'

This is the person qualifying what his has done, sort of giving a reason for commiting suicide, and saying that his life is horrible, and he can't do anything about it, and more than that, he doesn't feel he can tell anyone his problems ('i can't speak')

'I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone'

This is the person saying that they're not afraid to live, in a sense they just choose not to.

'Honey if you stay, I’ll be forgiving'

Again from the perspective of the friends/family.

'Nothing you can say can stop me going home'

He's assuring them that nothing's going to change his mind.

'Can you see
My eyes are shining bright
Cause I’m out here
On the other side
Of the jet black
Broken mirror
And I’m so weak
Well is it hard understanding
I’m incomplete
A love that's so demanding
I get weak'

He's in hell for commiting suicide, but he still says that in a sense, this is ok, because his life was so horrible.

'These bright lights have always blinded me
These bright lights have always blinded me
I said'

This can either be seen as people in the world who have good lives, and are happy, and he's jelous of this, or as the fires of hell.

'I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I’d never speak
Awake and unfraid
Asleep or dead'

I think this is a metaphor, for the point after his suicide, where his 'soul would leave his body, and he realises he's not afraid of death. His suicide note is beside him, and now it seems trivial ('I see you lying next to me, With words I thought I’d never speak').

In terms of the patient, following the lines of what some others have said, it's basically about the patient realizing his death is imminent and not being afraid any, and his love/friends/family realizing that they can't do anything about it, but also realizing how much they will miss him.

These aren't correct lyrics!
Here they are, the actual words that are inside the cd:

Now I know...
That I can't make you stay
But where's your heart
But where's your heart
But where's your...

And I know
There's nothing I can say
To change that part
To change that part
To change...

So many
Bright lights they cast a shadow
But can I speak
Is it hard understanding
I'm incomplete

A life that's so demanding
I get so weak
A love that's so demanding
I can't speak

Chorus:
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you'll stay I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

Can you see?
My eyes are shining bright
'Cause I'm out here on the other side
Of a jet black hotel mirror
And I'm so weak

Is it hard understanding
I'm incomplete
A love that's so demanding
I get weak

Chorus:
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home
[x2]

These bright lights have always blinded me
These bright lights have always blinded me
I said

I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I'd never speak
Awake and unafraid
Asleep or dead

Cause I see you lying next to me
With words I thought I'd never speak
Awake and unafraid
Asleep or dead
[x3]

Chorus:
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

Sorry about that first chorus there, it was supposed to be "Honey if YOU stay" like in the other ones.

I always thought they sang "Awake and done afraid", like if he wouldn't even say the words if he was afriad of someone that perhaps threatened him. Well well, they don't.

I have to say this is an amazing song, and the last few lines when you only hear Gerards voice... My heart bumps fast, I'll tell you. And when he finishes the whole masterpiece of a record with "HOME" I feel like wanting to FLY, he is such an admirable person...

And to those wondering, this WILL be the next single off the cd!!:D:D
And then again Disenchanted for some reason, good song but personally I find many of the songs on The Black Parade way better.
