Lyrics for Bling (Confession of a King) as interpreted by ShotgunXXWedding

Bling (Confession of a King) Lyrics
When I offer you survival,
You say it's hard enough to live,
It's not so bad, it's not so bad
How do you know that you're right?

I awoke on the roadside,
In the land of the free ride,
And I can't pull it any longer,
The sun is beating down my neck

So I ran with the devil
Left a trail of excuses,
Like a stone on the water,
The elements decide my fate,
Watch it go..."bling".

When I offer you survival,
You say it's hard enough to live,
Don't tell me that it's over,
Stand up,
Poor and tired,
But more than this

How do you know that you're right?
If you're not nervous anymore,
It's not so bad, it's not so bad

I feel my vision slipping in and out of focus,
But I'm pushing on for that horizon,
I'm pushing on,
Now I've got the blowing wind against my face

So you sling rocks at the rip tide,
Am I wrong or am I right?
I hit the bottom with a "huh!"
Quite strange,
I get my glory in the desert rain,
Watch it go..."bling".

When I offer you survival,
You say it's hard enough to live,
And I'll tell you when it's over,
Shut up,
Poor and tired,
But more than this

How do you know that you're right?
If you're not nervous anymore,
It's not so bad, it's not so bad...

Higher and higher,
We're gonna take it,
Down to the wire,
We're gonna make it,
Out of the fire,
Higher and higher. (x2)

Higher and higher,
We're gonna take it,
Down to the wire,
We're gonna make it out,
Whoa-oh-oh Higher and higher...

It ain't hard to hold,
When it shines like gold,
You'll remember me.

This song might be my favourite that I've heard off of Sam's Town. I was very honoured to be the one to submit the lyrics. ANYWAY!

This song means a lot to me...like lulabella said, this song is all about don't give up. Although I've read this song is about Brandon Flowers' alcoholic father, for me, it has more of an relationship meaning.

I take it as a person in a relationship that's really having a hard time keeping everything in a good situation. Let's call this person Jane for the sake of making this easy on me. Jane really can't take it anymore.

(And I can't pull it any longer,
The sun is beating down my neck)

Jane makes excuses to her loved one for why everything is going downhill, but the excuses won't solve anything, it all comes down to fate to decide what will happen.

(So I ran with the devil
Left a trail of excuses,
Like a stone on the water,
The elements decide my fate,)

Jane keeps trying to keep the relationship going, and her significant other keeps saying, life's hard enough and their relationship just makes it more taxing. She thinks he's going to leave her, she pleads for him not to. She needs him to be strong; even though they have a lot going against them, there's more to it all than the problems.

(When I offer you survival,
You say it's hard enough to live,
Don't tell me that it's over,
Stand up,
Poor and tired,
But more than this)

He thinks it's all better between them, he thinks it's all perfect, but Jane sees otherwise. He isn't worried about the relationship, so obviously he's not going to see things from a negative view. He makes her think everything is okay, but only for a while.

(How do you know that you're right?
If you're not nervous anymore,
It's not so bad, it's not so bad)

Jane keeps switching between two ideas: it's all okay and it's not okay. She doesn't know what to think, so she keeps pushing on for a point of perfection in the relationship, but obstacles get in the way.

(I feel my vision slipping in and out of focus,
But I'm pushing on for that horizon,
I'm pushing on,
Now I've got the blowing wind against my face)

He starts throwing little arguments at her, and she keeps questioning is it okay? She finally realizes their relationship is going nowhere, it's horrible. The realization of this hits Jane hard. She knows she won't feel happiness until the holes in the relationship are patched, and it doesn't seem likely that will happen. (like rain in the desert) So, she might as well throw in the towel.

(So you sling rocks at the rip tide,
Am I wrong or am I right?
I hit the bottom with a "huh!"
(??) Quite strange,
I get my glory in the desert rain,
Watch it go..."bling".)

Jane knows in the end, they're going to make it through, make it out of all the hell, and the relationship is going to climb 'higher and higher'.

(Higher and higher,
We're gonna take it,
Down to the wire,
We're gonna make it,
Out of the fire,
Higher and higher.)

She realizes how great they are, and knows that it really won't be that hard to hold on. He'll always remember her for trying to keep it together no matter where they might end.

(It ain't hard to hold,
When it shines like gold,
You'll remember me. )

In the end, I feel it is a song of confusion, insecurity, and holding on through the hard times. I can see myself in this song so much. It's beautiful how the Killers' music can mean something so great to everyone. I also suggest everyone read my comment on Sam's Town...it's better than this one ;)

Shit, I just had a big analysis of what I thought this song meant and lost it.

This is my favourite song of the album by far...Basically I think that it is referring to Brandons fathers alcohol addiction (or anyone who has been down the same path)

There are two people speaking in the song - one being Brandons alcoholic father and one Brandon.
Most of the song is about Brandons battle to get his father to help himself, fight the addiction and change his life.
Brandon tells of how he assures his father, and also shows how his father feels - that he cant make it out of the hole he has dug for himself, and he keeps slipping back into the temptation...he covers it with excuses...and brandon is becoming exhausted by it "Shut up, poor and tired, but better than this" He knows his father worth and is having a hard time getting through to his dad.
Near the end he seems to have given up "Glory in the desert rain" basically he feels that he will not be able to convince his father.

But he cant throw it in because he cares so much about this person "We're gonna make it, Out of the fire" - out of the fire, like out of the addiction.

The last sentence "You'll remember me." is Brandon telling his dad, that when he makes it out, he will remember how Brandon assured he was better and could pull through and how much easier it could have been if he had have tried earlier.

The song I feel is about being there for someone who is suffering or in a bad phase in anyway, and having them constantly let you down and give up, but sticking throught to see them come around...and how tough and hard it is to watch.

I feel this song because I know what its like to be down and feel like you cant get out, even with outside sources telling you you can...and then realising afterwards how you let yourself get further into a bad state and needed someone you cared for to pull you out.

That's what I get from it, im probably totally wrong but still lol

I think Brandon said in NME this song is about his dad, and how he worked hard, had a lot of kids, and how you can tell he's happy with his life when he plays with his grandkids. I think it's sweet and I loooove this song.

This song is amazing! I can see it being a big radio hit soon enough. I love the beat, really up-lifting. As for it's meaning, I think it has been well covered above.

It sounds kind of like he's singing from god's perspective. The chorus is God talking, and the verse is someone who gave up everything to find God and wanders in the desert living the life of poverty. the wanderer gets closer and closer ( i get my glory in the desert rain) but it keeps getting more difficult (i can't pull it any longer) and wants to give up. god keeps talking to him but he doesn't realise who it is. finally they speak as one, as the seeker is finally aware of a way out (we're gonna make it out of the fire, higher and higher) and is given spiritual gold. Just a thought.

Ok, i really love the words to this song and all thats in it. but in terms of the actual music (forget lyrics) i have found it difficult to like. i was suprised at the feedback to be honest as my sister agreed it was the worst on the album (not in terms of lyrics!) it is growing on me but i would have liked it with a different melody and it would been great.

I am pleasantly surprised at all the different interpretations of the song: an internal/external relationshippy struggle, alcoholism and a caring son, & a '40 days-40 nights in the desert' deal. The music and lyrics also seem to go hand in hand, though they may or may not be able to stand alone, beautiful by itself.

In my head, I'll take the queue the title gives us and take the mindframe of a king and his servants. What would be the prologue is the king offering survival to his people: "When I offer you survival, you say it's hard enough to live." He is optimistic: "how do you know you're right?"

The next two verses may be able to speak for the suffering people: "the sun is beating down on my neck...the elements decide my fate."
The first chorus is, once again, between king and his subjects: "stand up, poor and tired, but more than this."

"But I'm pushing on for that horizon, I'm pushing on." Now my mind focuses on King, whose supposedly valiant efforts are met with opposition, and then, inner turmoil: "I hit the bottom with a HUH!...I get my glory in the desert rain. Watch it go..."

[who else thinks the BLING noise is that sound after certain villains are tossed into the outer reaches of space, i.e. Jesse & James from that dear ol' series Pokémon?]

Ahem, now, "King," to me, can also be seen as someone aptly nicknamed King in "Ouran High School Host Club," but that is of little consequence. I'll go on to say that this second chorus now depicts the King's own slow deterioration ("SHUT UP!"), but meets a certain someone who now tells HIM, "if you're not nervous anymore, it's not so bad."

We get the climax, now, with: "Higher and higher! Higher and higher! We're gonna make it out of the fire!" This is where I'd imagine the King going through the highest of ordeals, and the music goes to beautify my image of King sacrificing himself, perhaps even his life (THAT would be coined the 'denouement' for this little story).

Epilogue is a legacy, a message, left behind by this person who seemed so great but transcended even that: "It ain't hard to hold. When it shines like gold, you'll remember me." And that should be left for interepretation.

I love it for the story I get in my head! That's just me, though.

it think the narrator is talking to some one (the king) and reflecting on how he got to were he is refering in the 1st verse to the king as stone on the water meaning low class "the element decide my fait" meaning he has no controll hes working for the "man".

in the 2nd half he says "So you sling rocks at the rip tide,Am I wrong or am I right? now hes the boss and he sold out in every thing that he belived in to get ther and now he treats the people he used to be like he was treated "I get my glory in the desert rain" which means he has nothing BUT money

the higher and higher is just him tripping out on his power and wanting more and more like it will replace all the evil things hes done to everyone

and "it anit hard to hold wen it shines like gold youll remember me'' he leves his legancey in his millions not by living a good hnoest life

but wtever it accully think its a story of brandon flowers father and his battle with alchol addiction

I don't intend to leave a comment of the meaning, you guys have done a good enough job for me. I just have to say that this song is INCREDIBLE and I can't believe it took me so long to realise it; I am a Killers fan I promise! They've never gotten a beat wrong in my opinion.

When I offer you survival,
You say it's hard enough to live,
And I'll tell you when it's over,
Shut up,
Poor and tired,
But more than this

"Shut up!" just makes me wanna scream with it's perfectness!

And I love the sense of hope in the verse of amazingness that is

Higher and higher,
We're gonna take it,
Down to the wire,
We're gonna make it,
Out of the fire,
Higher and higher.

Confessions of a king. That's what this song is about in the end. He compromised his whole life until he didn't even know what was right and what was wrong. It's not hard to hold when it shines like gold...

OK, this is my take on it (I won't explain how the lyrics apply, do it for yourself)
I think it is referring to a 'king' of sorts, or at least someone who was accustomed to money. He is thrust into a situation where money means nothing and survival everything. The 'bling' of gold, became the 'bling' of water....

oh c´mon guys! get the fuck with the king stuff!
This song is about never giving up.It´s a powerful song full of meaning.

I love the way he is talking with himself or whoever he is:

¨shut up! Poor and tired but more than this.¨

it´s like ¨stop whining and keep pushing on your goddamn goal¨

And when he says that after the storm everything will be fine...

Higher and higher,
We're gonna take it,
Down to the wire,
We're gonna make it,
Out of the fire,
Higher and higher. (x2)

But I sincerely don´t understand what the hell means the last part of the song.

I thought this song was about being tempted by some sort of "devil"...there's references to like Jesus being in the desert for 40 days. It's kinda picking up where "All these things that I've done" left off. He obviously feels tempted , but he feels like he's more than that, and he's telling himself not to give up. It could also relate to other people as well that feel the same as him. He's worked hard, he's looking for the exit, he's looking for his faith.
