In the movie there is a scene where clementine and joel are laying in bed and she asks joel if he thinks shes pretty and discusses her low self esteem from childhood to which joel kisses and reassures her she is pretty.

Joel falls back in love with Clementine after getting past the bad memories but she has already had him erased from her memory so he knows theres nothing he can do.
"Find her at the bottom of a plastic cup, drowning in drunk sincerity"
Clementine is frequently shown drinking, even crashing Joels car which let to their breakup and a scene where she is drunk at a restraunt and starts going off on joel in public

Joel is struggling to get Clementine to remember her

basically saying our past will better help us understand the future and make things easier for us to get through in the long run

I don't know why but this song makes me so sad. Really powerful.
Except I think this song is about a guy who falls in love with a girl, who has a lot of problems and trust issues, and has been hurt a lot from the past.

Meaning she's so hurt from all the guy in her past, she doesn't notice the narrirator, who loves her, and she is too blind from all the hurt and jaded-ness and self pity that she doesn't even notice how much he loves and cares about her.

This probably means the girl is crying because she might love him too? Or knows she could possible get there? But she is scared to death that she will get hurt just like in the past by this guy, so she is crying her eyes out because she wants him, cares, loves him, but is just reminded too much of how much it could potentially hurt if things go bad with him, just like every other guy.
Then the narrirator tells her "the past is only the future with the lights on" (which is so poetic and true) to say to her that the past is the past, and you couldn't control it, but you have learned from it and light has been shed from all of that and you're only stronger from it.
He wants her to move to the future, even though it unpredictable, you should just live because it's kind of all you have.
i think of it as the main singer is singing about a girl who is fine on the outside but she really hates life. shes always getting drunk and shes not doing anything with her life. he meets her but shes drunk but shes letting everthing out. He saying stop crying and do what you want to do, dont just be like all your friends who get drunk every night.

I think that means that whatever happened in the past will happen again; when it happens in the future, you'll be aware of it happening because it had already happened. In the past you were in the dark because you had no idea what was going to go down cause this had never happened to you before. But in the future, it's like the lights are turned on and you can see how everything is going to play out... because it already happened.
I have no idea if anyone will understand this haha, but that's my take!

I think the line 'the past is only the future with the lights on' does mean that we can see the past, but the future is in the dark so therefore can't be seen.
I can kinda relate to this song a little T_T
