You thought we'd be fine
All these years gone by
Now you're askin' me to listen; well, then tell me 'bout everything
No lies; we're losin' time

'Cause this is a battle, and it's your final last call
It was a trial; you made a mistake, we know
But why aren't you sorry, why aren't you sorry, why?
This can be better; you used to be happy; try

You've got them on your side
And they won't change their minds
Now it's over and I'm feelin' like we missed out on everything
I just hope it's worth the fight

'Cause this is a battle, and it's your final last call (Why'd you have to let it go?)
It was a trial; you made a mistake, we know (Can't you see you hurt me so?)
But why aren't you sorry, why aren't you sorry, why?
Things could be better; you could be happy; try

'Cause this is a battle, and it's your final last call
It was a trial; you made a mistake, we know (Can't you see you hurt me so?)
Why aren't you sorry, why aren't you sorry, why?
This can be better; we can be happy; try

'Cause this is a battle
This is a battle

And it's your final last call

'Cause this is a battle
This is a battle

And it's your final last call

This is a battle, and it's your final last call

General Comment:While it's been said that she wrote this about the war and government, what I'm going through at the moment makes me see the song much differently. To me it's about a couple, and one person finds out the other has cheated: You thought we'd be fine / All these years gone by / Now you're asking me to listen / Well then tell me bout everything / No lies / We're losing time

The chorus also seems that way to me: It was a trial / You made a mistake / We know / Why aren't you sorry

Then it switches over to the cheater's point of view, claiming they don't stand a chance at fixing things if the other keeps recruiting loved ones to their defense: You've got them on your side / And they wont change their minds

They're trying to figure out if the relationship is worth the battle: Now its over / And I'm feeling like I missed out on everything / I just hope It's worth the fight

    and

This could get better / We can be happy / Try

Interesting how many ways you can view a song, depending on your personal experiences! Love this song.

General Comment:i truly believe this is one of the best songs ever written.
    colbie's voice is so beautiful!

i know that she wrote it about her opinions on the war, but i think it could also be about a couple who has been together for a really long time, and then his love for her kind of fades. she says "you used to be happy to try" meaning he used to be happy to try to fix any problems in their relationship but now he just doesn't try at all. he's not really telling her how he feels and she says "no lies, we're losing time" meaning that she just wants to know what is real. and she also says "you made a mistake"..maybe he cheated on her or did something to hurt her and she's just asking him to tell her that he loves her and he won't hurt her anymore but he won't because he doesn't know if he can be true to that.
or maybe i'm way off lol

either way it's an amazing song.

General Comment:I love this song. I played it over and over when my best friend and I got into a huge argument over my new girlfriend. She did many things she later regretted, but at the time didn't feel sorry at all. I think this song can be used in many cases... That was mine and it helped :)

General Comment:Now I'm reading the lyrics I can tell that its about the war, but it can be about a relationship to people as well. Thats what its like to me cos it reminds me of a relationship so I guess it can just mean different things to everyone

General Comment:I don't think it's nessecarily about a guy, maybe a friendship that got ruined. I can really relate to this. I was best friends with this girl from the time i was 6 until last year. We just grew apart and neither of us were making an effort to stay friends. And she had this I don't care attitude about it. So we stopped talking. We still talk every now and then, but it's not like before. But it's good like that.

General Comment:I don’t know that I agree with this song being about the war, or any war in general. I can see it being about a pasted boyfriend but I wonder if it is more about a relationship with a parent. And she wants to reconcile cause she questions if she missed out on that relationship “..and I'm feeling like I missed out on everything..” but this is the “last call” on the chance at the relationship, even more the a last call it’s the final one, which means she has probably given this person several “last chances”.

There is mention of a division of sides, between the singer’s side and the person who she has this estranged relationship with and that people took sides, which made me question if it was family taking side.

General Comment:This song is incredible. I've been on/off with someone for 4 years and it's like we always go through this battle. The very first time I heard this song I had him listen to it. This is amazing... it really is...

General Comment:SHAMS is right, this song is about her views on the war. When I first heard the song that was my instant impression....I did some digging around and it turns out that's right on the money. The following is from Colbie's own mouth:
"I wrote “Battle” about my frustration with our government and politics, my opinion on the war, and about people and the hurt and harm they can cause when they get too wrapped up in their own agenda. About wondering how they could feel no remorse, and why instead of owning up to their mistakes and doing what is right, they continue full force on the same path, refusing to take the necessary steps to begin to make things better again, and telling twisted stories and imposing fear along the way to gain supporters on their side that never even heard the truth."
