wow. this peice is haunting. i hate using that word because it sounds so cliche, but it's so dark and evil sounding. like a ghost wrote it. when i hear this song, i get this scene in my head of elliott at coney island in NY riding a carnival ride on an autumn night, but he is far far away from normal conciousness. and he feels almost 'more dead than alive' (velvetunderground)

i was home alone when i first listened to this one. it scared the hell out of me. i had to stop listening because i got so bothered by it. that doesn't happen to me a lot. i can't listen to it anymore unless i'm in the company of others. thought it is a very pretty song.

Why is this so scary? It's a beautiful song, not creepy to me. I imagine an empty street with old lamp lighting, or an old timey movie.

The song scares me, too. I made a "Saddest Of" mix for Elliott Smith and threw this at the end to listen to while I slept. When this popped up (I happened to be awake) it creeped the hell out of me.

Beautiful. Frightening. Haunting.
i actually agree with bubbamoo, that suits this piece very well.
i also see it being played over a horrible scene. mabee a death. maybe someone who has hanged themself. i dunno mabee im just sick, but it has been called haunting. and just seems to fit right.
it can mabee make a horrible scene, seem less horrible, if you know what i mean.

I see a carnival closing down for the night and all the freaks and geeks are just around the dark corners. Some lamps light the night but you can't seem to make out whether those figures on the carousel are really alive or not. This wonderful, weird, weave of sound dissolves into a rainbow of faded colors as it is packed away into waiting railroad cars before it disappears to another town far away from here.

I think it's a bit bizarre that the last song on the last album released during Elliott's life is an eerie instrumental called "bye".

Sounds like it's being played in an old empty concert hall and being heard from the back row in the balcony.

I love piano and he surely does

Does this remind anyone else of Edward Scissorhands? This would have been perfect in that movie. A little haunting, very beautiful, magical, casually intoxicating, vintagey little tune.

I agree with so many of you; it scares the shit out of me but I love it.
It's such a hauntingly creepy piece, but at the same time I can really see the beauty in it. I also picture it like bubbamoo, the piano with no one playing.

This song feels like how I do most of the time. Especially in high school. I would move around the crowded hallways between classes and whenever I got to a door I would never need to open it because there was always just enough room for me to squeeze through because of all the bodies. So since this has such a ghostly feel to it I walk around the mall pretending to be a ghost and purposely make eye contact with people because they immediately look away again most of the time. Its like making a movie out of life and using the music to make a soundtrack to it.

This song is so difficult on piano.
I picture it being played on an old piano covered in spiderwebs in an attic and you can see the dust floating in the air when the light catches it and you can't hear it properly because it's being played by a ghost.

Or maybe a person riding away in a carrage from something that they love looking through the back.

This song was used, though I believe it had a slight variation, in a film titled "Southlander."(it was named Snowbunny's Serenade in the film). I think I remember the scene as being pretty weird, like someone playing this on piano while someone else is doing cocaine/slow dancing. Anyway, Elliott also makes an adorable cameo in the movie as a bus driver, if anybody is interested.

admittedly, if you haven't seen the rest of the movie, the beginning of this clip will seem very strange to you!
