Children,
Broadripple is burning
And the girls are getting sick
Off huffing glue up in the bathroom
While their boyfriends pick up chicks
And darling, I'm lost
I heard you whispering that night in Fountain Square
The trash-filled streets made me wish we were headed home
And there was love inside the basement
Where that woman used to lie
In a sleeping bag we shared upon
The floor most every night
Oh, darling, I'm drunk
And everything I that I had loved has turned to stone
So pack your bags
And come back home
And I'm wasted
You can taste it
Don't look at me that way
'Cause I'll be hanging from a rope
I will haunt you like a ghost
If my woman was a fire
She'd burn out before I wake
And be replaced by pints of whiskey
Cigarettes and outer space
Then somebody moves
And everything you thought you had has gone to shit
Well, we've got a lot
Don't ever forget that
And I wrote this on an airplane
Where the people looked like ants
And when a woman that you loved was gone
She was bombing east Japan
Don't fucking move
'Cause everything you thought you had will go to shit
We've got a lot
Don't you dare forget that
And I'm wasted
You can taste it
Don't look at me that way
'Cause I'll be hanging from a rope
I will haunt you like a ghost
And I'm wasted
You can taste it
Don't look at me that way
'Cause I'll be hanging from a rope
I will haunt you like a ghost
Broadripple is burning

In my opinion, again its just that, but I think this is a song about a failed long distance relationship.
"Oh honey...........pick up chicks"
Broadripple is a neighborhood in Indianapolis I believe. I think this portion is talking about the utter chaos that hes been left in now that she has left him all alone in the neighborhood the grew up in and fell in love in.
"And darlin'.......headed home."
He remembers the night she told him she was leaving. He wishes they were heading back to Broadripple, but he knows they aren't. She's off to bigger and better things. So he's lost.
"And there was love.....most every night"
This is more reminiscing about their time together in Broadripple.
"And darlin' I'm drunk......and come back home."
He's drunk and he went to where she moved and he is begging her to move back to Broadripple so they can be together and make everything right.
Refrain
He's drunk and can tell she knows. He doesn't want her to judge him, he just wants her to come home. Otherwise he's going to be miserable and won't be able to live without her.
"And if my woman.....outer space."
She left him in the blink of an eye to move elsewhere and the only thing he knew to replace her with was booze and cigarettes. The cigarettes and outer space makes me picture a guy standing in the middle of the street, smoking a cigarette, looking up at the stars, thinking about what he's lost. It's quite haunting.
"Then somebody moves.......to shit"
Basically says when somebody moves away the whole relationship that you thought was perfect blows up in your face.
"But we.....forget that."
Here is trying to convince her. Even though we are far apart, we've got a lot going for us.
"And I wrote......east Japan."
Here is flying back home after his unsuccessful attempt to convince her to get back together and maybe even come home. She's the "nuclear bomb" that has devastated his life (east Japan).
"Don't F%#$
"Don't F#*$($($(..........forget that."
Basically telling people that if you have a relationship you think is the one, neither one of you should move because everything you thought you had will blow up in your face.
Refrain
Same as last time.
Again, this is just my opinion, im sure others with different life experiences will think differently. Sorry for the double post!

On the "bombing east japan" bit...
I think that this is a metaphor for the utter destruction that is caused as a result of losing the woman (or man) that you truly love. Your world is completely changed, you feel lost, and you feel as if you have nothing left.
Therefore, when the woman is "bombing" (that is, in the middle of the act thereof) east Japan, she is in the process of wrecking the man that loves her so much.

"Oh honey,
Broadripple is burning
And the girls are getting sick
Off snorting coke up in the bathroom
While their boyfriends pick up chicks"
I think we all agree that he is talking about his hometown and how unstable it is.
"And darling, I'm lost
I heard you whispering that night in Fountain Square
The trash-filled streets made me wish we were headed home"
Here I believe he sees that he doesn't belong and he knows that, so he is lost in this town. The "i heard you whispering night..." part makes me believe that the girl he is with relates to him and he felt like them two could leave and find a place more suitable for them, hence he wishes they were headed "home".
"And there was love inside the basement
Where that woman used to lie
In a sleeping bag we shared upon
The floor most every night
This seems to me like a personal reference, and it could also be interpreted as how crappy it was the place they fell in love (inside a basement where a woman used to lie -___- lol possibly a hobo).
And darling, I'm drunk
And everything I that I have loved has turned to stone
So pack your bags
And come back home"
Here he realizes that the girl that used to be so fresh and related to him just turned out to be stone, their love dried out because she was just putting up an image in order to get him to like her or w.e other reason. Now he wants her to come back, he wants the girl he met that one night, the one that felt like he did, the one that wanted change and wanted to get out of that town.
“And I'm wasted
You can taste it
Don't look at me that way
'Cause I'll be hanging from a rope
I'll be hanging from a rope”
Similar to the previous posts, he is indeed wasted and she is kinda disgusted by him and he sees that. He drinks because he is trapped in this crazy town and the only way to relieve the pain is by drinking but she just doesn’t see that so it makes him feel depressed.
“And if my woman was a fire
She'd burn out before I wake
And be replaced by pints of whiskey
Cigarettes and outer space
Again, he is talking about how she was just this image that was alive and free, but now she is just burned out so he replaces the “fire” they had, by drinking, smoking and dreaming (whiskey, cigs, and outer space).
“Then somebody moves
And everything you thought you had has gone to shit
But we've got a lot
Don't ever forget that”
I really don’t know how to interpret this part, I’m guessing somebody took the chance and moved (perhaps a close friend or himself) and she can’t stand somebody breaking off from the unstable town but he tells her that they have a lot of people left.
“And I wrote this on an airplane
Where the people looked like ants
And when a woman that you loved is gone
She's bombing east Japan”
My favorite lyrics of the whole song. He finally moved and decided to rid himself of the town, and now he’s travelling and seeing how kind of insignificant and small some people were in that town. Even though he may have left her, she is still destroying him like an atomic bomb, causing disaster, calamity, and destruction within him.
“Don't fucking move
'Cause everything you think you have will go to shit
But we've got a lot
Don't you dare forget that”
Here he knows she is comfortable in her own town, she doesn’t want to leave that environment, because if she did everything will go to hell.
So this is just my own personal view on the song, feel free to make any suggestions or critic to what I wrote
She's bombing east Japan"
its an allusion to World War II when America bombed Hiroshima in 1945. I don't think that it literally means the woman did this. i believe it is referring to the pain and suffering that the people of Hiroshima felt during/after we dropped the nuclear bomb. it was very devastating. so when it says, "when a woman that you loved is gone, she's bombing east japan" it means that she is causing him to feel that intense suffering.
but yuhh this song is AMAZING! both the demo version and the version on Not Animal and the day trotter sessions ep
love it
