Those with the golden axe have tried to tell me
What they say
That the bird in my chest was dead
But that's never, never, never

She ain't my thug no more, ain't no kind of killer
And she can break 'em off if she damn well please
Just as long as she brings it home to me
And it's still hot

Can you touch what I'm saying?
It's like, did Shuggie do it yet?
No, not yet, wait

Those with the golden axe have tried to tell me
Tell you what
That the sex in my walk was cotton soft
But that's never, never, never

With question marks in my eyes
And your strange name pressed to our lips
We arrived at number eleven
So charged and ready for slaveries

I won't take the stage straight, understand
Under capes with druggy cock dragons
I wanna put out so bad
But something bad says the kid's probably right

Are you deflating at the question?
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, okay

Now that the parachute has opened, well
Don't it make you feel good?
Now that the parachute has opened, well
Don't it make you feel good?

Be careful how you touch me
My body is an earthquake
Ready to receive you
My mind's making glaciers

Metals for my soldiers
Let's be like strangers
Touching for the first time

Skeletal lamping
The controller sphere
False priest

Skeletal lamping
The controller sphere
False priest

General Comment:Is it maybe 'those with the golden eggs'? Sounds like it to me, and would match the Fabergé reference. Still no idea what it means though.

This song never ever fails to make me grin like a loon. It's so wonderfully mad.

General Comment:Adding to all of the interpretations of this song, id have to say its definitely dealing with a bunch of ecstasy, which adds to the bit about kevins drug issues and such. just so you guys know :)

'Now that the parachute has opened, well
Don't it make you feel good?

General Comment:@2:45 i think the line is "I wanna put out so bad, but something that's sad: the kids are probably right."

    then it goes..

    "Are you deflating? (huh?)
    That's a question! (oh)
i dont know, i dont know.. (ok)"

General Comment:Just mentioning... Anyone noticed how two album names have come from one of the lines in this song? (Skeletal Lamping, and False Priest).

    Just saying. =P

General Comment:@ciprianiii: This really is such a sad, sad song despite some of the very groovy and happy-sounding melodies. Example: "Now that the parachute has opened, well, don't it make you feel good?" It seems (at first) relatively harmless from a lyrical standpoint and has a really awesome melody, but it's really such a sappy line if you understand what he is talking about and who he's talking to. The evolution of Kevin's songwriting and wit and lyrical range is really a thing of beauty.

Also, it should be noted that this song is not only a sad song, but also a somewhat empowering song. Because while he is being torn apart by Nina (and that is certainly nothing to be happy about), he also responds strongly and with conviction to her proddings with "Never, never, never!"

General Comment:@Evancesanek: Thank you for reminding us of that reference. It had completely slipped my mind until now, although really the meaning of the reference is something that was not entirely lost on me.

The significance of this line plays right into the overall analysis ciprianiii gave. The bird in Siddhartha's dream is in this reference (although unspoken) probably alluding to the past love between Nina and himself.

The bird in his chest (which is where Kevin picks up with the allusion) is his memory of this love, and is his guiding voice, the rope pulling him forward (although here in more of a romantic sense than spiritual). And although those with the golden axes (Nina) have tried to convince him that his soul, his ability to love, is dead, he exclaims that that will never happen. "Never, never, never!"

General Comment:The first stanza references Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha. Siddhartha, who is seeking enlightenment, gets caught up in a life of physical pleasures and satisfaction of the senses. He grows rich and reckless, but loses an essential part of him, a strongly guided strength of spirit. He has a dream in which he finds a beautiful bird, belonging to his lover, dead outside of its golden cage and he throws it out the window. Later, Siddhartha talks about the bird in his chest as the guiding voice within him, as well as his overall sense of living his life with a real sense of purpose, to the fullest extent.

So, not really sure exactly how that relates to the song as a whole, but i love Barnes's literary references. Anybody wanna guess at the larger significance?

General Comment:I always thought he was saying:
"are you deflating? That's a question!"
I kinda liked my interpretation better for some reason

it seems this is about the transformation of Georgie Fruit (parachute has opened)
ciprianiii could be right, but I have really no clue.
