I'm in a crisis, I need help Come on mood shift, shift back to good again Come on mood shift, shift back to good again Come on be a friend Nina Twin is trying to help, and I Really hope that she succeeds Though I picked the thorny path myself I'm afraid, afraid of where it leads Chemicals, don't strangle my pen Chemicals don't make me sick again I'm always so dubious of your intent Like I can't afford to replace what you've spent Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Nina Twin is trying to help, and I Really hope she gets me straight 'Cause my own inner cosmology Has become too dense to navigate I'm in a crisis, I need help Come on mood shift, shift back to good again Come on mood shift, shift back to good again Come on be a friend Come on be a friend Two, three, four Chemicals, don't flatten my mind Chemicals, don't mess me up this time Know you bait me way more than you should And it's just like you to hurt me when I'm feeling good Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals Come on chemicals

General Comment:iN HIS OWN WORDS THIS SONG IS ABOUT DEPRESSION.... i LOVE THE KIND OF OXYMORON OF THE OVERLY HAPPY MUSIC AND THE UNBELIEVABLY SAD LYRICS..... BRILLIANT!!

General Comment:I'm not convinced it's about drugs.

Both him and Nina (his wife) are Geminis. I think this has a lot to do with the song..
Nina calls herself Nina Twin. Twin isn't actually her last name. The twins are the sign of that zodiac.
Geminis are known for having erratic mood swings.
plus he talks about his inner cosmology..

My Interpretation:I always thought this was a song about having bi-polar disorder and using prescription drugs that don't always work the way they should to deal with it, and some times seems to restrict his creativity.

General Comment:To me it's pretty obvious that it's not about chemicals in the brain, nor illegal substances.

I feel like it's about medication. Basically, if you are bipolar you will take two kinds of medication, usually lithium and anti-depressants. They will bring you to a normal mood level but the bad thing is that they sorta kill your creativity.
Thus the strangling of pens and such.

I think that's a struggle for anyone on meds. They make you feel better but at the same time they make you feel worse. Perhaps he's been on medication before, stopped and then is trying them again (perhaps for the nth time) hoping that this time it'll actually work for him.

General Comment:This is probably about taking pharmaceutical drugs for a bipolar disorder or sometihng of the like

Even when he is in a good mood he has to keep using the drugs and he feels like they are making him into something he's not, or dumbing him down, making him dull... one of those, or maybe all of them.

Analysis aside, love this song for the lyrics and the melody, however unconventional it is. Probably my favorite by of Montreal.

My Interpretation:Asked "Are you a stoner?" by The Stranger's Christopher Frizzelle in direct reference to the song's "chemicals", Barnes says, "Yeah, that has nothing to do with drugs. That's the chemicals in your mind." [2]

    FRIZZELLE: Serotonin?

BARNES: Yeah. I went through this chemical depression, and that's when I was writing a lot of the songs for Hissing Fauna. They're all songs about that experience. And I was experiencing it in the moment that I was writing the songs, and sort of asking myself: What the hell is going on? Why are you all of a sudden totally paranoid and plagued by these anxieties? And why is everything so distorted and confusing and fucked up? My lifestyle hadn't changed that much. And then I realized, well, there's something going on inside of me that I don't have control over, and then you realize how vulnerable you are to these things, these elements that you can't understand, or unless you go on medication and get it under control. It's like you're being betrayed by your body.

General Comment:lala love this song, it's so addictive! It sounds like it would be on a really trippy messed up kids show.. I definitely think this song is about drugs. How could it not be? Of Montreal makes light of topics like this. xD

General Comment:When Kevin Barnes says "chemicals", he means the already existing chemicals in your head. He felt that his body was betraying him by making him depressed.

General Comment:I've heard this has to do with him dealing with depression and being on anti-depressants, and fearing that they may alter him too much.

General Comment:hey i would like to add in that this album was pretty muched produced because he had switched anti depressents so thats what the mood switch could be about but i beleive it was more about depression than drug abuse
