Lyrics for Cato as a Pun as interpreted by delial

Cato as a Pun Lyrics
Cato, play with my head
I won't know the difference
If we're living in the novelist
Or statistician

Cato, mess with my concepts
My inner vision
Like a strobing light
Please confuse my every decision

I can't even pretend that you are my friend
What has happened to you and I?
And don't say that I have changed
Because, man, of course I have

Are you far too depressed now even to answer the phone?
I guess you just want to
Shave your head, have a drink, and be left alone
Is that too much to ask?

Wow, this was early post. I haven't been able to hear the song until three days ago. It is my favorite song thus far on the new album. I think it is about a girl, calling her the great orator Cato, and talking like she is confusing him as Cato could, of course i could be completely wrong.

It's "statistician" not "statitition"

"...depressed now to..."not "not to"

I think that it's just about two friends who have drifted apart. Our narrator thinks it's too late to fix what might have gone wrong.

"Are you far too depressed now to even answer the phone?"

is actually

"Are you far too depressed now even to answer the phone?"

What an amazing song. I am so excited for Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?

I think that actually the singer is talking to himself, seeing himself depressed and as a different person than the one he used to be. He notices how much he has changed and he doesn't like to see how he is now.
Plus it makes sense considering the fact that the (more or less) whole album is about breakup psychological breakdown...

I agree with toadknickers. This is what I thought also as I started to think about the concept of the album. Hissing Fauna starts with a Sunlandic Twins-like song "Suffer For Fashion", and then Kevin's depression/anxiety starts to manifest in "Sink the Siene" and then especially in this song.

I think that "Cato" is either a metaphor for something inside of him.

Less literally though, this song could definitley double as a "two friends drifting apart" tale.

great song, really, from a truly inspired album. i think cato is actually representative of the depression he feels, always twisting his interpretations and decisions into things he wouldn't actually believe or think, and after that he starts in on failed relationships.

the lines

I can't even pretend that you are my friend
What has happened to you and I?
And don't say that I have changed
Because man, of course I have

really speak to me, personally. great, great song.

i saw this song in concert...amazing. anyways, during the song kevin is acting it out with bryan poole, the bassist. like the part where he says "are you too depressed now even to answer the phone? I guess you just want to shave your head, have a drink
and be left alone" and bryan says "is that too much to ask?". it's very funny and dramatic. anyways, this made me think it's less about himself and more about someone else.

well this was actually the first song i ever heard off of HFAYTD? and i immediatly thought of Shakespears Julius Caesar. In JC, Cato was father of Portia the wife of Brutus, who in the end of the play kills herself from depression and lonliness. Portia killed herself by 'drinking fire' or swallowing hot coals so when the line; 'have a drink
And be left alone' i referenced directly to that. I didnt even really like the play Julius Caesar, but i do love this song!

I love how all the children and listeners of Of Montreal seem to have their own interpretation of the song. Really missed that in music! I listen to their music when I sleep so my interpretation is very dream related. I was steping infront of and looking behind a mirror ( like the old mikey mouse cartoon) and my mirror self was coming out of the mirror and singing the other lines of the song

i know that kevin and his wife had split up a little while ago, and so he left the country and recorded this album, and then afterwords it was finished they reconciled and got back together.

to my knowledge, that's what happened.

so i think that this is pretty much straight up about his wife, and the whole album is about her.

p.s. cato was also in the original 'pink panther' movies, as peter sellers companion.

not that i think this relates to him at all.

Actually, in real life cato was a roman statesman who was known for being very stubborn, hence the name cato as a pun. He's comparing the person who he doesn't see eye to with to cato. Cato is also in the play Julius Caesar which would make since because of Montreal seem to tie in reference to plays alot in their songs.

In concert last March, Bryan responded to the line about head-shaving with, "Is that too much for Britney Spears to ask?"
