Lyrics for Suffer for Fashion as interpreted by delial

Suffer for Fashion Lyrics
We just want to emote until we're dead
I know we suffer for fashion or whatever
We don't want these days to ever end
We just want to emasculate them forever
Forever
Forever

Pretty sirens don't go flat
It's not supposed to happen like that
Not like that
Not like that

We've got to keep it physical

When our tellies are six hours away
Please call to say that you miss me, feel me, or whatever
Vicissitudes are boxing our heads
Like they just want to emaciate them forever
Forever
Forever

Pretty sirens don't go flat
It's not supposed to happen like that
Not like that
Not like that

We've got to keep our little click clicking at 130 BPM
It's not too slow
If we've got to burn out, let's do it together
Let's all melt down together
Together
Let's go together
Let's do it together
Let's go together

Forever
Forever
Pretty sirens don't go flat
It's not supposed to happen like that
Not like that
Not like that

We've got to keep our little click clicking at 130 BPM
It's not too slow
If we've got to burn out, let's do it together
Let's all melt down together
Together
Let's go together
Let's do it together
Let's go together

it's "we've got to keep our little clique clicking at 130 bmp" as in beats per minute

"let's all melt down together" "let's melt down together"

and i'm pretty sure it doesn't say "please tell me that you miss me, feel me, or whatever"
and rather, 'come to say' instead of 'tell me'

You don't need all those forevers or all those "not like that"s...
Anyway, it's just "pretty sirens...", not "our pretty sirens..."

It's "when our tele's are 6 hours away," not "when our tellers are 6 hours away"

And it's also "please call to say..."

And it's "vicissitudes are boxing our heads, like they just want to emaciate them forever"

it's "clicking at 130 bpm" and "let's all melt down together"

To me the line "We've got to keep it physical" sums up the song. I think it describes a relationship based on physical attraction, wearing appealing clothing, and nothing really deep. "Please call to say you miss me, feel me, or whatever..." also sums that up as being a relationship that probably will never become deep and meaningful, but it's like he could have met this girl by recognizing her from across the room as being his type.

think this song about metrosexuals so i do have a few points

1. We just want to emasculate them forever

i always jock dudes who dress all gay gay, so they suffer for fashions.

2. Let's all melt down together

you seen how bright those clothes are??

3. We've got to keep it physical

some dudes are always buff so noone beats them up

4. Vicissitudes

wtf?????

"4. Vicissitudes

wtf?????"

One reason among many that no one should take your comment seriously.

1. emasculate means, like, to weaken or wear down. not "to make masculine."

2. vicissitudes = changes.

To me this song is a statement against the idea that we all need to be beautiful and young-looking forever. I think Kevin is hinting at the idea that things naturally slow down and wear out, and we need to accept these changes. Sirens fall flat, our hair greys, and our bodies slow down.

"If we've got to burn out, let's do it together
Let's all melt down together"

It happens to everyone, so why are we so scared when it happens to us?

i definitely think this song is about living in your own world so that time doesn't bother you. and time as in birth to death as well as time being from trend to trend. the imagery i get out of this song is just people escaping from life by worrying about meaningless things like fashion and partying and all that good stuff.

the least I understand, the more I like it... (L) of montreal!

"Please call to say that you miss me, feel me, or whatever" so contradictory... as if in the beggining he's begging for attention (PLEASE CALL) and he loses interest so quick, in the end he doesn't care at all (WHATEVER)... awe.some!!!

What does "go flat" mean?

I took sirens to mean the women in greek myths that would sing so beautifully that sailors would crash their ships into rocks in an attempt to get closer. So the sirens going flat would be like them losing their ability to sing, which is what they lived for.

I guess they are saying they suffer because it is fashion to suffer, not that it has anything to do with the fashion business. after all they talk about emotions, loss and relationships. waht do you think of this option?

First of all, I believe it should be "clique clicking" rather than "click clicking". No proof, but I think contextually it makes more sense.

Considering that this song kicks off what is generally accepted to be a break-up album. The album seems to chronicle his emotional progression in a loose chronological order, and I'd argue that this song kicks off the story just when he's realizing that the break-up is inevitable and impossible to fight or stave off. The lyrics mock his prior denial.

For me, the mythological siren idea is a bit of a stretch. I believe it's a reference to modern-day sirens, such as on emergency vehicles, which naturally go flat (in the musical sense) when they pass by you due to the Doppler Effect.

kakeeman's post above is spot-on: "things naturally slow down and wear out, and we need to accept these changes. Sirens fall flat, our hair greys, and our bodies slow down."

when he says "pretty sirens don't fall flat" I believe it's with tongue firmly in cheek - demanding that one's siren remains "pretty" is ridiculous considering that the Doppler Effect is a law of nature.

I think it's a song about youth - their indifference and what they whole sacred. They care about how they look (suffer for fashion), yet try not to have personal attachments even though they do "Please call to say that you miss me, feel me, or whatever" and their friends (the line about keeping their clique "clicking.}" I think sirens are indeed a reference to Greek mythology, and the person is realizing people do indeed get old.

Instead of growing old, though, the person has other plans, "If we've got to burn out, let's do it together." It's kind of an FU to growing old.

so i haven't seen THE DRUG REFERENCES!
when i read the lyrics, i thought it was about drugs.
they do become part of "fashion" at a point.
therefore, we suffer for them.

"we don't want these days to ever end."

of course you wouldn't wanna come down from that high.

the 130 bpm reference. i thought it was about the speed of your heart. how it beats faster when you do certain drugs.

"if we gotta BURN OUT let's do it together
let's all MELT DOWN together"

he doesn't wanna come down by himself.

see?

On a live recording, of montreal said it's about 'cool people fucking.' so, some of you are right. It's about keeping things physical, not having any depth in a relationship; everything is about appearance. The title says it all, suffer for fashion. All that 'cool people' think about is how they look, and how others look, and they probably suffer for it. and I think it might be a joke about their live shows because of Montreal is a very psychedelic live band with a lot of aesthetic gimmicks, not saying they don't sound good, but a big aspect of being entertained at an Of Montreal concert is the visual aspect.
Those are my 2 cents.

Just wanted to point out that "cliques clicking at 130 bpmm" happens at exactly 01:30 into the song. Pretty clever.

And yes, I realize this could be a conincidence, but the sound snippet at the beginning with the baby bells and the "la la la" (is that his daughter's voice?) could have been sequenced/edited to allow that particular lyric to match the timecode.

So it's either devilishly clever or it's a hell of a remarkable coincidence.
