Lyrics for Lithium as interpreted by Liquid-Spear-Waltz

Lithium Lyrics
Lithium- don't want to lock me up inside
lithium- don't want to forget how it feels without
lithium- I want to stay in love with my sorrow
oh but God I want to let it go

come to bed, don't make me sleep alone
couldn't hide the emptiness you let it show
never wanted it to be so cold
just didn't drink enough to say you love me

I can't hold on to me
wonder what's wrong with me

Lithium- don't want to lock me up inside
lithium- don't want to forget how it feels without
lithium- I want to stay in love with my sorrow

Don't want to let it lay me down this time
drown my will to fly
here in the darkness I know myself
can't break free until I let it go
let me go

Darling, I forgive you after all
anything is better than to be alone
and in the end I guess I had to fall
always find my place among the ashes

I can't hold on to me
wonder what's wrong with me

Lithium- don't want to lock me up inside
lithium- don't want to forget how it feels without
lithium- I want to stay in love with my sorrow
oh but God I want to let it go

I think this song is about being "in love with your sorrow" (like how Amy said she was for a long time in a kerrang interview.) I know the feeling, it's sort of like... you're afraid to be happy, because you've been sad for such a long time and you're so used to it, anything else is scary.

btw for most of these songs I'm just putting what I think the song means to Amy... it doesn't mean I think the songs can't be interpreted in other ways. I just think it's kind of cool to have the "official" explanation early on in the comments.

depression can be an addiction. if you're depressed long enough, it feels unnatural to be happy.

i've been bipolar in the past. during that time, it felt like hell whenever i was merely content instead of manic or depressed.

there is a Nirvana song called lithium too. the following is from its wikipedia article:

"The name of the song is often attributed to the metal lithium's tendency to be found in mood stabilisers such as lithium carbonate and lithium orotate; because of this the lyrics are often interpreted as describing bipolar disorder."

Something it may be important to note - Ben had/has bipolar disorder. I'm not sure that the song is actually about him though.

My favorite song on the album.
I think anyone who deals with depression or delt with depression a lot can relate to thing song.
We all have this dark place in ourselves where we go and it feels good to be there a lot of times.

This song is the "my immortal" of the album.
Amy said it was.
I agree it is the best song on the whole album

The Open Door's second single.

Lithium is a drug given to people to treat bi-polar disorder.

Definitely my fave of this album, so easy to relate to. I am a little disappointed in the overall open door because of the lack of hidden meaning in the lyrics. It's sad that they didn't continue in that direction, but i love the new feel to the music. very addictive.

There's quite a few songs called Lithium. Can't wait for the video clip. I think Liquid Spears nailed the meaning. It's about being inlove with your sorrow. To me anyways, like Amy can see everything going on, all the shit, and she feels guilty because she likes it and likes the sorrow it puts her though, even though she doesn't really want to. That doesn't make sense i know but i can relate. One of the most amazing songs ever.

I agree, is an incredible song :)
Umm lots of people saying they miss hidden meanings and stuff .. looking over Fallen, I really don't see that many hidden meanings? Though maybe Everybody's Fool. Don't see much 'hidden' in Origin either ..?
Oh well, I love the album, and am gonna buy it for sure!

This song is about loving and hating your own misery at the same time...
She doesn't want to want to forget her misery although she doesn't want to deal with it anymore.

Love this song.

Hmmm could this song be about Shaun? Or about Ben? Or about Amy herself?

Saying how she enjoys being sad and depressed sometimes, and that she wants to be cured, Lithium being a drug to treat bi-polar disorder, hence the song title.

This and Good Enough are no doubt my favorites on the new album.

I agree that anyone who's dealt with depression would be able to relate to this song. Sometimes it feels a lot better and safer to stay in a dark place. You know it's not really right and you want to feel better, but at the same time, being down is what you're used to. It almost feels better NOT to feel better, as much of a contradiction as that may be.

Eh, I dunno. I suck at describing things. That probably won't make any sense unless you've experienced it. :S

When I first heard this I didn't know that lithium salts were used to treat bipolar disorder. I thought that Amy Lee had gone all chemistry on our asses.

Such a good song. Beautifully encaptures the mind of a depressive and the notion of "curing" oneself with medication.

This song holds so much meaning...story of my life "I want to stay in love with my sorrow, but oh god I want to let it go,"...I've been dealing with bipolar for so long, it feels strange to be truly happy, instead of manic or suicidal. More often than being happy, I find myself empty...so empty that I'd rather be miserable again. Evanescence is so eloquent in the way they get their point across. I adore this song.
