This town is colder now, I think it's sick of us
It's time to make our move, I'm shakin' off the rust
I've got my heart set on anywhere but here
I'm staring down myself, counting up the years

Steady hands just take the wheel
And every glance is killing me
Time to make one last appeal
For the life I live

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving, but I go nowhere
Yeah, I know that everyone gets scared
But I'll become what I can't be, oh

Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, can you see what I see?

They're tryin' to come back, all my senses push
Untie the weight bags, I never thought I could
Steady feet, don't fail me now
I'ma run 'til you can't walk
Something pulls my focus out
And I'm standing down

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving, but I go nowhere
Yeah, I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh

Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, you don't need

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving, but I go nowhere
Yeah, I know that everyone gets scared
I've become what I can't be
Oh, do you see what I see?

"And you'd give anything to get what's fair But fair ain't what you really need"

There might be a play on words happening here too. Which would mirror how things happen in real life i.e. neither black or white and sometimes both at once.

When someone is held back by their past, perhaps a traumatic event or sustained abuse or similar, and they're rolling through the stages of "breaking free" there is a point where they have to give up caring about that event of abuse happening again, to either themselves or another person. And it's hard to let go of something that is so obviously morally correct and emotionally healthy - to care about other people, to have empathy.

But it is empathy out of place, emotionally speaking; it's empathy without courage, and holds the wounded person's mindset back from healing. There is a serious tension for quite a while and nothing seems to solve the heartache faster. A person has to wait for time and "do nothing".

So the above lyrics describe how you'd do anything to "get what's fair", i.e. to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again to anyone, inadventently holding onto your mindset that has made you a "protector" of people. But fair aint what you need to move on personally, to regain the courage to face your own life, to face the uncertainty of life again.

But the way a certain mind works is that on another level, a person can't move on without the fear. Fear is actually attempting to push the person forward. Without fear, fear of pain, there would be no tension and no way to know how to move forward. In the final stages, a person both embraces and releases their fear.

They realise that fear is a terrible thing, not to be sought after or simulated for effect - that won't work because it is out of context - or be enforced on another person for cathathis - because that would be immoral. Fear is a natural and unavoidable state in the human condition that holds us back and contains the element needed to push us forward.

So the possible word play (the sound of the word, not the spelling, since lyrics are heard not read) is both:

And you'd give anything to get what's fair But fair ain't what you really need

    and

And you'd give anything to get what's fear But FEAR ain't what you really need

With time, the person has their last piece of fear, or close enough to all of their fear and anger, taken from them by time and natural process and they can face whatever comes in life, free to act as they choose under influence of their new personal insight as they understand it, rather than always under the influence of past trauma.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Head > Heels
Ed Sheeran
“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
