Lyrics for Foot to the Throat as interpreted by loc4485

Foot to the Throat Lyrics
Virginia death threat, Virginia creeper vine.
The hands that feed intent, choke the purpose of this time.
Take all that you can give, and i will make it mine
No care for what you've spent, even fool's gold has it's shine

Never held down, never restrainted.
Virtue's foot to the throat,
free of broken chains.
Thus always to tyrants,
Laugh at the conquered, the victims now betray.

And in this Commonwealth,
There's merely a common concer for self.
We hold these lies to be self-evident,
As the dividends will reflect.
And in this Commonwealth,
There's merely a common concern for self.
The coffers have long run dry

Never held down, never restrainted.
Virtue's foot to the throat,
free of broken chains.
Thus always to tyrants,
Laugh at the conquered, the victims now betray.

Like a bull in a China shop,
But the shelves have all been cleared.
A thief in an empty vault,
The sheep already sheared
A screen door on a submarine,
An eagle with a broken wing,
Hope in a dead man's dream,
The sound of a bell
that will never ring

You're just wasting time

the last part of the song seems to have some meaning for sure
"Like a bull in a China shop,
But the shelves have all been cleared.
A thief in an empty vault,
The sheep already sheared
A screen door on a submarine,
An eagle with a broken wing,
Hope in a dead man's dream,
The sound of a bell
that will never ring"

but I dont know how to put in words, maybe like if you have all these great thing, why would you do this on thing to like fuck it over completely, well that what I got from the screen door on a submarine part

YOU'RE WASTING TIIIME.
great song yuh.
im not so sure, but I kinda get the message that people are always so stuck on things that arent supposed to be that important, like you undermine the really important things in life and give much more importance to shallow things..

"All those other things, I wanted to convey a sense of fruitless activities. Each and every one of those is a pointless object"

That's what the singer said about those last lines. I don't even really like LoG but I live right down the street from some of them so I like to read about them every once and a while.

THis is a list of things gone useless
THe bull in the china shop could do damage, but there's nothing to break.
The thief could steal in the vault-but there's nothing in it.
SHeep's wool is their main use-but they're wool's been sheared.
A screen door on your submarine won't do shit.
An eagle can't fly with a broken wing, making it all the less beautiful
Hope is useful-but not in the dreams of someone DEAD
Bells are meant to ring...
Basicly the sound of nothing.

This song talks about being useless and wasting your time (bull in an empty china shop, screen doored submarine etc.). I think it talks about how the band Lamb Of God rose from nothing and was told they could never make it " Virginia Death Threat, Virginia Creeper Vine " could be talking about how the band is creeping to uteer success like a vine. The whole wasting your time thing could be about the haters of the band being fucking stupid, and thewy should do something that matters like make a better band if they arent happy with LOG.

Its just a bunch of pointless stuff, the main point Randy wanted to get across was "You're just wasting time". The rest was just based off of that one thought.

We hold these lies to be self-evident,

so absolutely true. but, what's lately baffled me,
Thus always to tyrants.
what does that mean? i don't understand it, on it's own or in context.

I live in VA, which is a big republican state--with various republican lobbying groups, powerful political groups, etc. Randy is saying that he can't control anything that happens in his state, like a foot is on his throat. The last part of the song is about voting specifically. He could vote to change something in the state, but it would be a big waste of time, like the phrase "one vote does not matter" --he then has many metaphors to hammer in his message, bull in a china shop, screendoor, etc.

x|X.x - "thus always to tyrants"is va's state motto-thats the context; the motto is below an image on the state flag of a toppled tyrant

Lamb of God, originally Burn the Priest, was formed in 1990 by 5 guys that went to Virginia Commonwealth University. All of em grew up in Richmond, VA too. Once the band started to pick up some popularity, they got to start playing real gigs. But since the name at the time was Burn the Priest, a lot of places refused to let them play because they thought the name was "evil". So they changed it to Lamb of God. They were playing hits off of the first album, "New American Gospel" but by the end of the night, the crowd had booed them off of the stage. From that point on, Lamb of God has refused to play in their home town as a "fuck you" to the fans who abandoned them.

Notes about the lyrics:
Thus Always to Tyrants is the english translation of the latin phrase "Sic Semper Tyrannis", the Virginia State Motto.

Commonwealth is another reference to VA, as Virgina is not technically a state but a Commonwealth.

"You're just wasting time" is the message they send us Virginians who want them to play here again.

The song's title, Foot to the Throat, is another shot at VA, and it means basically that the tides have turned. They didn't want them back then, they can't have them now.

tommy121--besides repeating what I said in my previous comment, you're "fuck you" to virginia assumption is absolutely wrong. This song is on the Sacrament CD, the same CD which contained a "making of" DVD. In the DVD, the band played one concert.. can you guess where that one concert was? It was their "hometown" Richmond VA (The same Richmond where they recorded their albums, where they met and where they live with their families). Leading up the concert footage showed that they were excited about playing a show in Richmond, when they played they thanked the Virginia fans many times, and said that they appreciated them so much that they would crowd surf and play at the same time...which they did. Also the band held 3 autograph signings nationwide when sacrament came out...and one (which i went to) was in virginia...and solely for the fans.

Also -- "The song's title, Foot to the Throat, is another shot at VA" -- How is that a shot to VA? your contention makes no sense.

AND "Lamb of God has refused to play in their home town" -- then why would they bash an entire state in their song, and not just that one town?

For a more accurate interpretation, read my above comment.

Uhm... Idk i found meaning in all of the song really...
It talks alittle about Lamb of God's Message as a band in general; their over all message they tend to have through and through.

Lamb of god is from virginia,
and they tend to have alot of threats, etc. towards politics and so forth
They dont care about peoples money or anything, cuz they dont mean anything
even fools gold has its shine

They arent restrained from spreading their message unlike any other type of "revolutionary" would (seeing as blyth can be considered one) in that they're musicians and spread the message through music not physical violence that is very quickly put down by the government.

In times like these, what tLamb preaches is technicaly that of virtue, since their music usually talks about (either satiricaly or not) what shit this nations coming to

And theyre only stating truth in saying "and in this commonwealth theres merely a common concern for self", cuz truly thats what the majority of the nation is like.

However, the damage is pretty much delt, so even though they spread their message as much as possible, they realize they probably arent going to come around to ever bringing any true change in how the majority of people think in this world
and with this is also the realization and slight sense of them wasting their time trying to tell ppl this.

i forgot where i was going with this

In no way is this a bash on VA. On May 14th I went to one of their concerts in theirs and my own hometown. After almost every song, Randy would say, "Its godamn great to be home Richmond!" He also gave a 1 min speech on how proud he is of his home town.

They also said on the "Making of Sacrament" DVD that this album was all on a personal note. This song is probably a inner band struggle or a problem with the family, friends, ect. and how it is pointless to try and fix it.
