Lyrics for A Method as interpreted by prayingmantis84

A Method Lyrics
Eyes wide mine, suddenly everything
Flies by fine, mind goes on holiday
In its stead, clicking along the curb
Clucking tongues how could they have the nerve

There is hardly a method you know

It's a broken poem, started up yesterday
And it came true now, mind was on holiday
It's an open road will we soon see the end
It's an open book, a story to tell the band

There is hardly a method you know

It's a storm faced cloud, hanging in dystrophy
It's a cold, base clown laughing at enemies
It's a rough wild world could you please chaperone
It's a mind field trip, oh leave it the fuck alone

This is hardly the method you know

There's a purple pain strangling yesterday
There's a purple stain spattered on interstates
It's an awkward stage grasping at anything
Cause it's lost the page
Can't find a word to say
But they want you to
Oh they want you to
Yes they want you too
Oh they want you, too

Broken plates on dirty highways
Pave the way for alien grace

There is hardly a method you know

I wish I knew what these lyrics meant.

With the atmosphere it seems like a marching ghost.

I copied them straight out of the booklet. I doubt I could have come up with "mind field trip" on my own, to be honest.

i think this is about the creation of art and artistic inspiration...
about how there is no 'method' for it and it cant be forced, it just has to come to you
that what i think anyway

Artistic process is the theme I was feeling, too. Obviously, I'm not certain how everything plays into it, but here are some guesses.

Obviously, the whole method thing is artistic process; there being no formula.
The first two lines (suddenly everything flies by fine, mind goes on holiday) is that feeling you get when, god this sounds cheesy, but you really just feel whatever it is you're doing, whether it's music, or writing, or anything. It comes out.

I don't understand the curb thing, but clucking tongues, how could they have the nerve seems to be about the gall it takes to criticize other people's art.

I'm not gonna write anymore, but I think that's the basis for some discussion, hopefully.

What about the more obvious interpretation: Bad wreck. Friend dies. What to say to their family? This sucks.

I agree with Jiffy. It sounds like he's playing with words trying to talk about a car wreck.

I don't find TVOTR arrogant enough to write a song about their own artistic process, though I may be completely wrong.

They encored with this song live, and Subtle played along with them. Kyp handed my friend standing next to me two sticks to clack together during it. Simply fucking awesome.

Best song ever, this is not about a road accident oh my gosh, it seems to be about just everything in general how the world is a screwed up needs to change and peace needs to come to, and people need to be minding their own bushiness and chill out, just chill and take peace in

honestly, while the song could mean several different things, it could also be about tripping..."Eyes wide mine, suddenly everything
Flies by fine, mind goes on holiday"

when you trip on psychedelics your pupils become very wide...mind goes on holiday...

plus it reminds me of several animal collective songs...many of which are also about tripping

I'm interested hear from other people what made car accident come to mind

The first couple times I heard this song, the line "there's a purple stain spattered on interstates" really caught my attention, and my initial interpretation was that it was referring to the purple color blood takes after drying, and staining pavement. It kind of made me think of all these...well, purple stains on roads where people had died. It struck me in a very emotional way, which is unusual for me. Great song though, for that reason, and because musically it's quite lovely.

Although I'm not sure if the song is actually about car wrecks, I also noted that the next lyric, It's an awkward stage grasping at anything, kind of makes me think of being in a car accident and trying to grab onto something. I just noticed that now though, when reading the lyrics.

What is exactly arrogant about making a song about artistic process?

i dont think anyone knows what the band was trying to illustrate specifically in this song. the responses are simply reflections of people's personal attachment to the song. that is not to say that anyone is incorrect or correct-that would be presumptuous-their input is simply relative. i think that this should be a place to share ideas, not conduct debate; that will encourage us all to learn something new.

I like all the ideas presented here. the car accident is a logical observation with the interstate line. the first part of the song made me think the artistic method explanation. I've never tripped before but every time i read lyrics like these I am seriously tempted. this song reminds me of "Air Bag" and "Planet Telex" by Radiohead. awesome song

I think the beauty of music in general is that songs are open to interpretation by the listener.
Judging by the lyrics, "A Method" to me is about a psychedelic trip. "I'm a storm faced cloud, hanging in dystrophy" sounds like a bad trip/thought loop.
"It's a mind field trip, oh leave it the fuck alone", psychs are most definitely a field trip for the mind.
I think my thoughts on the song are a bit skewed since the first time I heard it was on LSD...
