Lyrics for Grace Kelly as interpreted by jonisofsparta

Grace Kelly Lyrics
Do I attract you?
Do I repulse you with my queasy smile?
Am I too dirty?
Am I too flirty?
Do I like what you like?

I could be wholesome
I could be loathsome
I guess Im a little bit shy
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me without making me try?

I try to be like Grace Kelly
But all her looks were too sad
So I try a little Freddie
Ive gone identity mad!

I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you walk out the door!

How can I help it
How can I help it
How can I help what you think?
Hello my baby
Hello my baby
Putting my life on the brink
Why dont yo like me
Why dont you like me
Why dont you like yourself?
Should I bend over?
Should I look older just to be put on the shelf?

I try to be like Grace Kelly
But all her looks were too sad
So I try a little Freddie
Ive gone identity mad!

I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you walk out the door!

Say what you want to satisfy yourself
But you only want what everybody else says you should want

I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you walk out the door!

OKay I just got on youtube and watched the video and a couple live videos. I've come to a couple conclusions:

1. He's definitely talking about Freddie Mercury because he does the hand thing EVERYWHERE. Where it be in the video for Grace Kelly or live.

2. He says "Channel my Baby, Hello my Baby, Putting my life on the brink". Go listen to each video for yourself and double check me. I've had an ear infection the past week so I dont know if I really heard that or not so it'd be nice to know if anyone else hears it.

3. I thought his name was pronounced Micah but it's not. It's pronounced Meeka lol Wow!

Personally, I think this song is about his childhood. He ever tried to fit in community but he never did.
He had a hard childhood. His father was a prisoner of war for a long time. When he moved to England ... London I think he was bullied because he was chubby and didn't spoke British English very well. At the end he unlearned how to write and to read and he became silent one day until he found his way to write songs... the first he wrote at the age of six...and when you compare his songs....almost every song is about the same ... Any other world, my interpretation, lollipop.. always a criticism of society. Really good musician btw...

calfr 400, you make a good point and it probably would be more correct than that we've all said about it refering to record labels but I believe he's already said in an interview it's about record labels. I like your perspective though. You've done your research. *applause*

elaborating on what "bluchickenlvr04" was saying about Mika's sexuality.. i think you may have a point!

i mean it does say in the song "should i bend over?" which has certain connotations (y'no what i mean?)

and just for the record, i have no problem with it if he is gay, or bi-curious?! cos he is a brilliant singer, his music is very.. bouncey.. and i just plain love the guy!!
im not saying he is queer, just that its something to think about

SORRY YOU GUYS...i thank God that tastes differ....even though i like Queen, i don't like this song of Mika.........my opinion: the most irritating song of all.......sorry if i stepped over the line by saying this, but it's freedom of speech that counts.

JObaby,

you're so right freedom of speech does count. That's is why we have complete freedom to tell you to go somewhere else with your opinions. No one cares if you do or dont like Mika. That's your problem. He's a genius and you arent. That's quite your problem. Nobody around here wants to here your opinion. This is songmeanings.net. Not share-your-opinions-because-you-can.net. all you who have been arguing about whether freddie means fred astaire or freddie mercury, have you ever thought of the possibility that it refers to both? mika is allowed to have double meanings isn't he? also i thought this was a site for discussing song meanings, not discussing the artists sexuality, unless of course it has relevancy to the meaning of the song. i would happily accept and argument that in this case it does.

UMMMM someone obviously hasnt read. Since I am the on that originally said it first, I'll clarify that i did in fact say it was possibly a DOUBLE MEANING for the song that he was bicurious. Go back and read, ClassicalGrace. You shouldnt talk until you thoroughly read everything. Otherwise you end up looking like an ignorant dumbass. By the way, he doesnt refer to both. You can look in his interviews, he said it's freddie mercury.

My proof that it could refer to his sexuality along with the original meaning as an "in your face" to record labels..I shall decifer the song in homosexual meanings:

Do I attract you?
Do I repulse you with my queasy smile?
Am I too dirty?
Am I too flirty?
Do I like what you like?

(Even though he may or may not be homosexual, he wants to know if he attracts "you". Most homosexual boys tend to be "dirty and flirty" or in lamen's terms, more sexual, than the hetrosexual boy. Do I like what you like = If you're a homosexual male, do I like guys too? If you're a hetrosexual male, do I like girls too? Do I like both worlds?)

I could be wholesome
I could be loathsome
I guess Im a little bit shy
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me without making me try?
(He can be lovable or hatable but either way, he's shy to get out and meet people. Why do homophobics want to just write him off without letting him show he isnt into them like that?)

I try to be like Grace Kelly
But all her looks were too sad
So I try a little Freddie
Ive gone identity mad!

(identity mad for some means they dont know who they are so they could be gay or straight...or both. He tried to be like Grace-a girl, then he tried Freddie-a boy.)

I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you like me?
Why dont you walk out the door!

(The different colors mentioned reminds me of a rainbow. Rainbows are a common symbol for homosexuals. Why does society not want to accept him for him? If they dont want to accept him, they can leave and just not listen to him.)

How can I help it
How can I help it
How can I help what you think?
Hello my baby
Hello my baby
Putting my life on the brink
Why dont yo like me
Why dont you like me
Why dont you like yourself?
Should I bend over?
Should I look older just to be put on the shelf?

(He cant help his feelings or how we think. Hello my baby twice could be to one of each sex. He puts his life on a "brink" when he likes a guy. Why doesnt society like him and why cant they accept themselves whether they be hetrosexual or homosexual? bend over...doggy style...gay. Look older just to be put on your shelf = Should I seem more experienced just to be shown off to the others?)

Say what you want to satisfy yourself
But you only want what everybody else says you should want

(You can call him a fag if that satisfies you but you only think that way because society raised you to believe homosexuality is wrong and that it should only be man and woman.)

If that makes any sense...it's a different perspective and makes you think. But I still understand it's about record labels.

As a response to bluchickenlvr04's comments, I find it hard to accept that it is subtley declaring his sexual orientation. You are drawing meaning where there exists none. Sure, you can analyze the lyrics to death, but I could also create an analytical argument as to how Mika's lyrics relate to clowns, or peacocks.

The way he discusses the topic of sexuality and his refusal to disclose that personal information to journalists doesn't fit with this idea of him writing a song full of subtle hints about his being gay. I think the song is far more about diversity in general, especially in the music industry. Being "mean", "green" (money-hungry) and everything more (competition) illustrates the darker side of the industry.

Mika is not only a singer, but a songwriter, too. His "Grace Kelly" music video is largely comprised of personal and family friends... so he is showing that he has control over his career and he is not the puppet of his record label. He's doing it HIS way, which is not common these days for a young pop artist.

Lastly, this ongoing debate about the nature of the name "Freddie", I would think along the lines of what ClassicalGrace wrote, in that it could very well mean both. Songwriters are ARTISTS. Not every word in a song has a direct meaning to anything in reality. Words are fluid, abstract, and oftentimes songwriters write to intentionally confuse and stir their listeners. I have yet to see an interview in which Mika publically admits to referring to Freddie Mercury in the song, so I can only go by what I know myself.

So, in conclusion, I don't believe a young man so private about his sexuality would write a song about being gay... although I believe that the openness to diversity of people expressed in his lyrics (and his party guests... huge age range) would include, but not be limited to, the openness to diversity of sexual orientation.

Oh, and I totally forgot to mention, one must also who Grace Kelly was to really appreciate the references in the song and title.

Yes, she was an actress for a little while (and a good one, being nominated for a number of oscars and winning one), but Grace's acting career stopped prematurely when she married the Prince of Monaco. She wasn't happy about the decision to give up her acting career for marriage and was open about her wishes to do both, but never got the chance. She remained married to the Prince until her death, but many reported it as an unhappy marriage for her. The Prince married her cause she was Catholic and fertile, after ditching his last partner of 6 years for failing a fertility test.

Grace Kelly was the bombshell of her time, dating many high-profile men and soaring to #1 so early in her young career (kinda like... Mika? lol) but she sadly gave it up. I think Mika's song is a tribute to such sadness and a proclamation of his own to not settle for what someone else wants, but for what he wants out of his own life. Perhaps the studios didn't like his vocal style, as it has been mentioned in previous posts... and perhaps they tried to change his sound, despite him wanting to stick to his "freddie". All I'm saying is that despite her beauty and accomplishments, Grace Kelly was a tragic character, sacrificing her dreams and wishes for someone else. I think there is a lot of meaning in Mika's choice of this woman as a central reference and title of the song.

OK, this is my third consecutive post, but I just read this quote on Wikipedia.org:

The lyric "So I try a little Freddie" is a reference to Queen's Freddie Mercury. Mika's voice has often been compared to that of Mercury, and the lyric, "I've gone identity mad!" is a reference to Mercury's 1991 song "I'm Going Slightly Mad".[1]

I know, Wikipedia is not some objective, peer-reviewed source, but I thought it was interesting, especially the bit about the song "I'm Going Slightly Mad".

Okay, I finally found the interview so this is the last time I am going to post about the whole "So I tried a little Freddie" line. By the way, Mika never said he hated Freddie Mercury comparisons, he just doesn't really like it when people ask him to sing Queen.

This was in an interview with the BBC:

BBC NEWS

Sound of 2007: Mika
By Emma Jones
Entertainment reporter, BBC News

Colourful pop newcomer Mika has come top of the BBC News website's Sound of 2007 talent list.

He has been voted the most promising new artist in the poll of influential and impartial music writers and broadcasters.

Mika (pronounced "Meeka") is getting a lot of attention for an artist at the start of his career.

His first full single, Grace Kelly, has generated 250,000 plays on MySpace in less than four months and is playlisted on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2.

The single and his album, Life in Cartoon Motion, have been described as a fusion of Beck, Prince, the Scissor Sisters and T-Rex - but there is one artist almost everyone compares his voice to.

"The comparisons to Freddie Mercury are fine," the 23-year-old says.

"They started long before I made the record - I've even referred to it in Grace Kelly.

"A Freddie comparison is a compliment. He's a genius and one of the best there's ever been."

So if that's not enough for you, than I don't know what is.

OKay first of all, kk4408, thank you for the interview. I hope that settles it all. There are more interviews beyond that I'm sure where you can watch...In fact, i'll look it up as much as I can.

Del Marquis, you OBVIOUSLY dont read. I never said that it definitely had subtle hints that he was of any type of homosexual. I basically said it raised my eyebrow when I first heard it. I love Mika and it wouldnt matter to me if he was or not. If you had read everything, though, you'd have seen the challenge to decipher where it COULD MEAN that he was gay or bi. So i took up the challenge. I already know it refers to record labels and the music industry. Also, as was already proven in the interview posted *compliments of kk4408*, he's said that Freddie does in fact refer to Freddie Mercury. There's your interview. Also, you proved it yourself. I believe you owe an apology to me but if you dont have the balls to then that's fine. Just know you dont read everything thoroughly and that's not exactly helpful if you expect to talk. I'd hate for you to look like an idiot more often than this. Anyways, I'm gonna stop before i get too far into my insulting. I know this isnt insult-all-the-idiots.net.

Blue Chicken, I know exactly what your post read, and my argument was that I would find it hard to believe that a person as private as he is about his sexuality would release his first single as a song about declaring such. Your lyric-by-lyric deciphering of the song seemed far more absurd than analytical, as you read meaning where there existed none. Mika's own animation of the song found on his website explains the theme briefly. For someone that agrees that one should not be concerned with his sexual orientation, you sure spend a lot of time on the topic by picking apart the song for gay double meanings. And if you were just doing it for fun as you claimed, then you're on the wrong site, baby. Google "too-much-time-on-my-hands.org" and go hooome.

Not sure if its a about record companies trying to fit everyone into a mold. However, it's something along those lines. Basically saying, I could be all these things but I'll be what I want. My favorites lines are "Why dont you like yourself" and "Why dont you walk out the door" Kinda saying, screw you to everyone who wants to change him into something he's not.

Del Marquis, Again, I didnt say it had double meanings. I meant some could take it as such. I questioned his sexuality shamefully when I first saw his video and then looking at the lyrics raised an eyebrow but I know it doesnt have the double meaning. I didnt pick apart the lyrics for fun. I just never turn down a challenge. It was kind of also proving a point that songs can have more than one meaning and they arent always what they seem. To your statement about you doubt he'd release a song declaring his sexuality since he's so secret about it, Of course he wouldnt. It's called descretion, baby. However, this argument could go on forever but you arent understanding what I say.

Not to mention. I am home. Silly :)

I DO understand what you are saying. You are AGREEING with me. But I'm curious if YOU understand what you are saying. For example, in your last post, you wrote:

"Again, I didnt say it had double meanings."

"..raised an eyebrow but I know it doesnt have the double meaning"

And then...

"It was kind of also proving a point that songs can have more than one meaning and they arent always what they seem."

There, Blue Chicken. I quoted you, word for word, so you can stop telling me that I am misunderstanding what you write. As soon as you figure out what you are trying to say, let me know, and I'll take a crack at it myself. :)

PS- Rowkem388, I totally agree. I actually joined the "secret society" forum on his website to see what it was all about, and (as mentioned in my last post), Mika has made these short animated clips on the theme of Grace Kelly and Love Today. Grace Kelly's clip shows pop artists of different colours (purple, brown, blue, etc) going through an assembly machine and then it shows the ones that don't fit in (like him), getting taken away in an armoured vehicle. Kind of abstract, but definitely gets the point across.

hahaha are you saying I contradicted myself? I've reread my entire post and then those sections alone and then again reread the whole thing. I know perfectly well what I was saying and it's all the same thing.

"..raised an eyebrow but I know it doesnt have the double meaning" - I didnt know beforehand what the lyrics meant or even said (it was my first time hearing the song). I know, however, the song does not mean both the thing about record labels/the music industry AND anything about his sexuality.

"Again, I didnt say it had double meanings." - I have yet to say 'Yes this song definitely has a double meaning'. I wouldnt say it. That's dumb. Everyone knows by now there is none. Point covered. Drop it.

"It was kind of also proving a point that songs can have more than one meaning and they arent always what they seem." - I did not say here the song had a double meaning. It meant people should always look into songs for more than just what they read because there could be a hidden message. Before you start in on that comment too. I'm NOT referring to the song. I definitely know there is NO DOUBLE MEANING to this song. Are we dont yet?

Good. Leave it alone now. This is stupid and ridiculous to continue an argument about who's reading correctly or not.

Actually, I dont' know why this is even an argument, as I'm pretty sure Grace Kelly has nothing to do with Fred Astaire.

And as far as his sexuality goes... don't forget that Freddie Mercury was gay...
