Great song.

The guy is at a stage in his life, where he has been acting differently, where he has not been himself. and a girl has fallen in love with him, now he is questioning this girl, wondering why she loves him. This guy is nervous about his true self, and doesnt trust himself with the girl. he is scared to love her because he is afraid he may go back to his old self, and he will dissapoint her, or he wont be what she expected.

thats just what i think..
if that makes any sense to anyone else..

it's kind of like he's afraid of getting too close, and at the same time he's afraid of letting her get too close. he's had something happen to him in his past that has changed him, and he doesn't want her to get hurt because of it.

she doesn't know the real him yet because he hasn't "let her inside", but she is falling for who she thinks he is ("who do you love, me or the thought of me?")

great song...this is one of my favorites on continuum.

The cliche'd title is annoying, but the non-chorus parts are pretty good. Continuum is so much different from Mayer's previous albums. I like it.

It should be noted that there's a crucial point that has been lost due to incorrect lyrics.

That being stated, I agree with amster8, but I also feel as if he's express that she may only be with him because of what she knows of him, or her idealized picture put into place in her mind. It makes sense. He states he can see through her love, and her love is merely what she thinks him to be. His first verse is a warning of the beginning of the relationship they're about to enter. In the second verse, he expresses that he would choose to end the relationship and start over again.

amster8 - i think you've put it eloquently and perfectly. this song fits my life right now because i'm in the position of the girl in this song, and the guy i'm interested in is john ... my guy just broke up with his ex only a few days before we met for the first time and really hit it off - thus the "you met me at an interesting time" bit. things were going great for awhile until he backed away and became distant, all because of exactly what you said - he was both afraid of letting his own guard down and of me getting too close, and he told me all this. bad timing kinda sucks :(

I agree with what everyone else has been saying. Another idea could be that maybe this guy has a bad history with women but he meets someone different, someone he likes more than anyone and he scared he will let her get away because of the way he acts. He just doesn't want to go back to his old self.

The idea of this song being John telling the girl how much of an asshole with sexy music is matched with these lyrics..."beg my way into your garden" and "break my way out when it rains" so he wants in then gets the heck out when things go bad. But the idea of someone "loving" you for the idea of you is more interesting to me. As with movies, tv and music the idealization and the perfect love is sung about, and shown countless times. I wonder if that really is love or more infatuation. Cause love is taking the good with the bad. Otherwise you're just cherry picking and bound for disappointment.

This songs got a cool vibe.

He's bein kind of coy with this girl he meets and says that he likes her a lot, maybe on a different level and it scares him a little cuz he doesn't want to hurt her. He's unsure of himself @ the moment for whatever reason(probably past relationships) and thinks that he won't live up to her expectations... What an asshole. Anyway, rockin song.

This song for me is a story of the past year of my life.. even though I am a girl, I play the role john did in this song. I met my boyfriend at an interesting time.. a time where I no longer had no idea who the hell I was anymore. I just had horrible things happen that affected me enought to change myself. I told him that he should be warned when he met me. He asked me on a date and I said "no you dont want to get into this'. he wouldn't give up but even when I said yes, I still told him that he didn't want to get into this.
I didn't trust myself with love and still dont.

when john says he will beg is way into the garden and get back out when it rains.. i dont think he is saying that he wants to 'duck out' when bad times hit. that would make him a jerk.. and john is nothing less than wonderful. he says that he would do it just to watch her back all over again.. i think that means that he wants to see her back again when she is happy even if that means he has to go through the sorrow again..shes worth it.
i would go back through all my heartache just to see my friend last year be happy again. but i cant.. you cant change the past and that is why i dont trust myself with love. i want my boyfriend to hold onto whatever he can to get him through. even if its not me.. cuz my relationship is for him.

good game Mr. Mayer... very jeE-nEe-yUs ;)

Only some people can relate to actually being honest with themselves and say... "Hey... I don't think I'm mature enough to really be in a relationship. I don't know if I can be unselfish." The attraction is there... but Mayer knows he's an asshole and will possibly send the girl in a runaround.

Great song... music arrangement is great... love the horns that introduce the guitar riffs (which are fantastic, btw) then slowly fade into the end... yip!

wow i always thought this song was pretty straight forward....ok heres my take....

John really is being honest here..he is telling this girl literally how bad he is, and how he doesnt trust himself with loving her, for reasons such as He will beg his way into her garden, and break his way out when it rains, just to get back to the place i started so i can Want you back all over again.. He will do everything to get with her, then take off when it gets bad. just so he can do it all over again. He even says "I dont really understand" why he does this himself...also i think he's criticizing her also..like saying "hey Im this way, but you dont really love me, you love the THOUGHT of me.and girl i see through it....

just what i think.

I have a feeling john mayer is talking about his sudden popularity because of his music, which has evidently changed his life. I feel that when he says, "no im not the man i used to be lady, see you met me at an interesting time," i think he is referring to how he was before his fame, and now, he can't trust himself with loving her, afraid that he may get caught up in his fame, and leave her behind, thus his saying,"hold on to whatever you find baby, hold onto whatever gets u through, hold onto whatever you find baby, no i don't trust myself, with loving you." i feel he is telling her to find something that she can still have to comfort her, something reliable and trustworthy that can help her make it through any possible pain he inflicts on her, just in case he leaves her.

this song is so crazy cusz its like wow this girls cool. but shes like wow i love this guy. n he dusnt wanna get wit her cusz hes scared hell hurt her. nd its also about thinkin yu love some1 wen yur really not. i used to think i loved this girl but i just like loved being around her nd the thought of her made me happy but like i really wasnt in love it was jus like a thought in my head. idk
