Is it just me or does the first verse and pretty much the whole song sound like "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star? Still an amazing album. It'd be cool if when playing this live they transitioned into a real quick version of fade into you... it'd be sweet!

I love this song, I get something new from it everytime i listen, and it never fails to give me goose bumps.

I don't have time to analyse all the lines but the things that spring out to me.

Firstly, the song should be sad, he's either singing about someone potentially leaving or possibly even dieing, and on top of that he's making reference to the end of the wolrd, which is hardly a cheery topic! However, I find the song incredibly uplifting. It doesn't fill me with sadness, he's not singing that world is ending he's just saying that if it does he wants to be with her, that's a pretty amazing statement to make about someone. "If it's all over then I want to be with you" wow.

Okay, some other notes, he opens with "I'd just about managed to forget you when you appeared in a dream". Why is he trying to forget her? She's not with him at the time. So has she left him? is she considering leaving him? Has she died? The lyrics don't seem to focus on any kind of regret or anger, so it's difficult to reconcile in my head that it's about a break up. Then the line "Fate is telling you not to go" suggests she hasn't acatually gone, but then is he just so upset that he can't face the fact that she has either left him or is dead? I think this last possibility is enhance by psychbains observations of the closing spoken line, "But the world didn't end. Yet, somehow..." Is he saying the world hasn't ended yet somehow you're not here?

Their's also a childish element to the song, in that he's seeing her in his dreams and she's playing with buckets of sand, has he known her since he was child, is he singing specifically about a child rather than a lover? Or is he just remembering more innocent time.

Anyway, I've run out of time. These are just some of the things the song makes me think about. I'm not saying it's what the song is actually about. I'm sure it means other things to other people, and thats cool. I'd love to hear other opinions. I find it hard to believe that such a beautiful song only has 4 comments.

I don't know, i never liked to "analyze" some song reading it line by line but.
The song has some "converging" feel , as if something is resolved, after screwing you up. It is more than the "end" concept emphasized in the song i think. Those sounds "flowing" so to say,not only do that with the half tattered vocals, but also the semi sad,semi peaceful feel of the song. Anyway, i didn't get much from the song when i listened it first, Quite a nice song i say, despite the sadness...
Anyway , i don't know why i am sounding like an idle minded critic but..
hey,psychobain when i read the translation, i onlt felt happy.. somehow i felt the song is complete.

I'm the opposite, i love to analyse song lyrics, not line by line on the internet, but just by listening to them and getting an overall feeling. it's great when you find a song that you can't quite figure out but still does something to you, trying to figure out why it does it by listening to it over and over. In this case it could mean a few things and probably does to different people. When they wrote it they might have just put a few phrases together that rhymed and had a similar concept and the overall tells no particular story and therefore I'm completely over analying it, but i don't really care. I love the song and i like to think I get something from the lyrics.

This song is one of my all-time favourites, I cry almost every time I hear it. I agree with Jawlipop with the vagueness and the fact that it just fits with me. To me it's the perfect simplicity of love conveyed within the lyrics and the vocals that really speaks to me.

For me, the 'meaning' of the lyrics is just about a boy who loves a girl, and the girl should be leaving, maybe moving house, whatever... 'fate is telling me you will not go'... so he makes his declaration: 'If the world ends, I hope you're here with me'

'In my dream you were playing woth buckets of sand...' I love that this section sounds like the seaside, with seagull-type noises and almost whale song being created with the synths.

Also, little suggestion on the brazilian bit at the end (Thanks so much for the translation)- my view is that it runs on into the next song...

They are reunited, and the joy of We're Here completes the pretty package, they live happily ever after.

I've often thought about the end of the world (usually while watching zombie films)and what I'd do if I knew it was coming - I'd go be with the one I love. And it's that simple sentiment that forms the basis of this song.

Listening to this song... it's like when you remember something and you can't distinguish if it was a dream or if it really happened. It's so vague and yet vivid; 'and you're even more beautiful there than i remember you being' To me, that line is an amazingly accurate portrait of our twisted reality; it captures the fact that sometimes we 'recognise' people in our dreams, that dreams alter our reality and reality alters our dreams.

'i dont think / i ever heard you speaking/ cause i was too wrapped up in the dream i was dreaming' That's an incredible line. It's like saying I didn't know the real you as well as I knew the person I imagined as you and saw in my dreams, almost like having a seperate reality with this person. Sometimes you really feel like that about people. Sometimes we say very little to certain people in our lives but we feel we have a some kind of parallel dialogue with them.
