Lyrics for When You Were Young as interpreted by sam_attack

When You Were Young Lyrics
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now, here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young

Can we climb this mountain? I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go

We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now- here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young
When you were young

I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know

So? Everyone was still quick to assume that "you" = she.

Why does Brandon Flowers have to constantly defend his sexuality? He has stated that he is not gay and that he hated how everyone thought he was gay because of "Andy your a star." Why would he even write it from a gay perspective if he didn't want people to think that of him.

And to ultradirty, you can't turn a song into christian rock shit...even if they played it on a christian station how would that change the song?

Actually I didn't mean the song becoming christian rock I meant the band. Especially as Dave used to be in a christian rock group.

Ok, since nobody seemed to get my point and jumped on the "oh, they r not gay!!!" train.

I don't think it was written to be specifically about a woman, since as I said before, there is no mention of she of any other female-related words. If a man wants to interpret this song for himself, then he can freely do so because the song doesn't specify the gender. That is the beauty of this song, IMHO. That is what I meant when I said you guys were jumping the gun by assuming the "you" was female. I'm sorry I didn't make that any clearer.

"waiting for some beautiful -boy-" "watch it now-here -he- somes" "-he- doesn't look a thing like Jesus" "But -he- talks like a -gentlemen-"

according to these lines I am suggesting that this song is about a girl or a gay guy because these gender specfic words point that the other person is a guy so the you has to be a female.

First of all, I love the killers! i'm their biggest fan!
When i first heard this song i got the impression that this song is about a girl who is hoping a really great guy will come along and save her from all the mistakes she has made in her life. She expects this guy to be "good-looking" and "perfect" (you sit there in your heart ache, waiting on some beautiful boy to save you from your old ways) but when she finds a guy he's not the type of guy she expected to fall in love with (he doesn't look a thing like jesus) but he turns out to be just what she needs and treats her very well just like she wanted all along (but he talks like a gentleman, like you imagined when you were young).
There's also a hint that her friends/family tell her he isn't a good guy and to stop seeing him. (they say the devils water it aint so sweet, you dont have to drink right now) She thinks she has the right to go for a different guy she would normally go for (but you can dip your feet, everyone in a little while)
The song also suggests they may have troubles in their relationship because of her friends/family so they need to take things slow to make it work. (can we climb this mountain, I dont know, higher now then ever before i, know we can make it if we take it slow, take it easy, easy now watch it go)
Anyway, thats just my opinion, this song can have different meanings for different people. By the way, it sort of reminds me of marissa and ryans relationship on the oc and the way marissa feels about ryan

Wow, this song is really good...

Definetly shows how the Killers are influenced by Springsteen...

Has a great chorus, with the off-kilter token-Eighties synths!

I agree with all that has been said. A girl with an image of beauty already in her head, waiting for her savior to rescue her from her loneliness. She knows what he looks like, talks like, acts like, everything.

The most telling line is the last one, however, "but more than you'll ever know". In it, we can see that she didn't give this boy a chance. But he probably would have been the best thing that ever happened to her. So sad.

Also, I don't think it's a coincidence that he refers to alcohol as "the devil's water" especially since the metaphor of jesus the savior has already been established. The devil is the tempter, the one who gives you foggy goggles at the bar, leading her astray to all sorts of miscreants.

I love the last chorus where the music builds as he says "he doesn't look a thing like jesus..." and then releases at "...talks like a gentleman, like you imagined". It affects me so much I want to raise my chin up and strut down these city sidewalks with my joe-cool sunglasses on. So much pride, so much integrity.

It flows well into "Jenny was a Friend of Mine" too, and so I find myself listening to this song and then all of "Hot Fuss". Can't wait for the new album.

I think this song is quite deep.

The song is about a girl "sitting in her heartache", who needs a man to come and rescue her. Because when she was young, she always dreamed of Prince Charming to rescue her. She "plays forgivness" by telling him that she's been hurt more than she has. She wants him to change her old ways of doing wrong. The devil's water is about her not forgiving the man that did her this way in the first place, she didn't give him a chance to make a mistake, she just chose to suffer and wait on her Prince, but he didn't look like a savior, but he's what's she's left with.

LOVE THIS SONG...the meaning comes so clear to me, but yet its so hard to explain it...for me, it feels like its talking about all the things you imagined adult hood to be when you were young and all the things you hoped to be...but then you grew up and saw it wasnt like that. It just means getting back to what is important in your life and realizing what makes you happy, even if it takes time to go back years and years to get to the simplicity of things "when you were young"....

PROBABLY ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE SONGS...until, of course, it gets insane air time on the radio, cause then it will just be annoying...even more annoying then other songs cause I'll remember it being my favorite and how they ruined it for me, those stinking Dj's...

This song is genius in the fact that you can interpret it in soo many different ways...I was reading all of the other posts about what its about and they all seem to fit...but in a way, every one seems to just be setting out the same scenario...a girl and guy relationship...personally, I think it can be interpreted as a metaphor for lifes struggles and hardships and how life was simpler when you were young...I don't know, just trying to clarify my above post...my thoughts are sooo confusing...XD
