Lyrics for When You Were Young as interpreted by sam_attack

When You Were Young Lyrics
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now, here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young

Can we climb this mountain? I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go

We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now- here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young
When you were young

I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know

This song is about the singer Brandon Flower's being a member of the Mormon church when he was young but falling away only to return later in his life. If you knew a bit about his personal life you'd totally understand this song.

He was an active member in his church when he was young but being in a band and always being on tour and partying and being a "rockstar" caused him to dapple in hard partying and alcohol.

Climbing the mountain higher, taking it slow has to do with him gradually falling away from his beliefs and his religion, but it's happening so slowly he thinks he can stop.

The "devils water" line is his alcohol use, which his church is against.

The song is about him feeling guilty about breaking the rules of a church in which he was an active worshiping member. He would look to his youth, him "being young", how he used to live according to his beliefs and feel guilty.

The whole thing about "looking like Jesus" has to do with members of the Mormon church striving to be Christ-like in the way they live their lives. His partying and drinking wasn't "Christ-like".

when I listen to this song,I imagine a country girl waiting for the perfect man(boy).and her example of perfect man(maybe for being a country girl, conservative and these things) is Jesus. And the boy,of course,is really a nice guy,a gentleman and things like that but has defects("he doesn't look a thing like Jesus").I don't know if it's write or wrong but that's the image that always comes to my mind when I listen to the song.

Sounds like it's about an older girl who had the dream of the perfect boy when she was younger... Then when he came around he was everything she ever wanted, They had it really well...or so she thought, It sounds to me that perhaps the girl had gotten married allready before the boy came along, Then this perfect boy she wanted tempts her, and she falls for it.

Meh, Thats confusing now that I type it. Hard to explain I guess, Sweet beats though. <3

okay so i guess i see this differently. i dont see her as being in past relationships at all. I think she was just a regular girl or whatever, who was pretty naive and not used to being with guys. I see her as being young; She trusts this guy wholeheartedly, and then he cheats on her. She is obviously devastated, but probably more shocked because she did not expect that to happen.
the whole thing about jesus, is that thats her background, her beliefs. in the video, to me it seems to be a hispanic country, and in the islands people are extremely religious. The point of saying "he doesnt look a think like jesus" is like saying hes different than what you're used to, hes an earthly "god" that she ended up putting too much trust in. But he talks like a gentleman, and he treats her well which is all she really asked for growing up.
The devils water...that part seems to be referring to the situation as a whole. The husband dipped in the devils water, it ended up not being sweet because he hurt the woman he actually loved, but that people make mistakes (but you can dip your feet in every once in a little while.)

I was just listening to this song and found a few connections (perhaps allusions?) to the Flannery O'Connor short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find.

This is what I think, based on the lyrics and the music video..which is based on a relationship, rather than just personal affairs.

When you’re young, you have high expectations for reality. She‘s (since the music video is based on a woman and a man, I’ll say ‘she’) waiting on a prince to come, which in the beginning of the video, she is dreaming, then later meets this man who was supposedly “perfect”, and basically he comes to “save her”, like the man had in her dream. Later she’ll realize he isn’t exactly perfect, and doesn’t really “look like Jesus”, either.

Now they’re “climbing a mountain”, which would mean that their relationship is still young, and yet they’re going a little too fast, so they decide that they should “take it slow”. (Later I think that maybe the man didn’t want to take it slow, which is what caused infidelity?)

Now their relationship would probably be just out of control, hence the “burning” and “hurricane”, or in other words, it’s just sort of falling apart, and they can’t really stop it.. At this point, she would be a little older than the point when she met the man, which would’ve made her younger then. Sometimes she thinks about who she was when she was young, and how naïve she was. I think all along she just needed a man who would turn her into a better person, but also be someone who she could really rely on. I think now she would realize that nobody can be truly perfect, like she thought so when she was younger, when she had the dream.

The “devil’s water” would be working against them, like infidelity, or temptations. It “ain’t so sweet”, meaning it’s not right, but ‘maybe’ you could “dip your feet”, meaning that the infidelity would probably occur, every once in a while, but the truth is, if you want a relationship to work, you can’t just do that.

The emphasis on the chorus is that her relationship just kept getting worse and worse, but the man doesn’t have to “look like Jesus”, to be kind, and treat her nicely, and she realizes that perhaps she should give him another chance, because there will almost always be a certain temptation in a relationship, which from the beginning of the song, she would be “playing forgiveness” now. Also, from the beginning, she learns that you can’t just “sit there in your heartache”. You have to do something about it, which is why she was shaking hands with the man at the end.

i believe it's about high expectations but having to lower them because reality becomes a pain in the ass. wishing for a Jesus but settling for a Peter. it may also be about an affair, if one watches the video that goes along with the song you get that idea. the man has an affair, the woman must play forgiveness. it may go as far as being about just marriage or a relationship in general.

Their most amazing song.
She was looking for someone perfect to save her (when she was younger) and he looked like that person, so trustworthy, her saviour and then he turned out to have flaws like the rest of them. She plays forgiveness (she has that pretension)in perhaps return for his goodness but he's not good, he's not perfect, more than she'll ever know.
Check out the video, it does a pretty good job of visualizing the song.

I know what this song means- I've been in that situation.

Basically, it's about a girl who was hurt by a guy and became so desperate that she just wanted a lover. He talked sweet to her, and that made her feel really good, even when she knew he didn't mean it. As for the devil's water, it's kind of forbidden fruit- what she knows is wrong but just feels so right.

I love this song- it's meaningful in a bittersweet kind of way, and I think it speaks to everyone who's been shot down and needs to try to pick themselves up. Love it!

it's about that dream of falling for that person we always dreamed about....but never really knew..and when we finally know that "dream" boy/girl...they aren't a dream....like the devil in disguise.

Ok. Here's my interpretation of this amazing song that has told my life (from the perspective of the guy in my interpretation) in a nutshell. Basically you have a girl who imagined the perfect guy when she was younger. However, she hasn't found him because she's been looking in the wrong places. Possibly had some bad relationships, basically judging on looks. But the guy who can save her doesn't exactly fit that image ("he doesn't look a thing like Jesus"). He may not look perfect, but he's still a gentleman. He speaks well, and means well. Quite possibly he's been there the entire time, as a friend maybe, without her realizing it, and has had these feelings about her but could never say anything.

I think it's about when someone's a kid they think that when they grow up eveything will be perfect and fine, so when they grow up they are dissipointed at life.

I think this is about a girl settling ...she's waited for so long for that "knight in shining armor", but gives up---"he doesn't look a thing like Jesus"...meaning he is not perfect, not what she was looking for....I also think this is being told through the eyes of someone very much in love with the girl...he is watching her settle...knowing that he should be with her.

well, whatever gender, i really liked idotswind's post about comparing your current life with your childhood, I think because we associate our childhood with worryfree thoughts we automatically think that there is some wisdom in what we believed when we were young. However, young minds are actually not mature enough to handle mature matter that we deal with when we are older and thus leads us to make irrational decisions like going for the guy who is romantic but breaks our heart in the end.

:) Well here is what I think. FYI, I checked on wikipedia and Brandon Flowers is quite religious. THis doesnt mean anything to me, and I dont think this is what the song is about, but just so that we got that straightened out.

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now, here he comes

The SHE seems like a person with a shattered confidence.
Caught up in her own lonliness, sick of herself (her old ways) she is waiting on a truly good person to save her and not care about her faults and mistakes.

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young

He does not seem like your average Savior, not holy or pure, but he is still a good person who can make her feel better. Which is what she really had forgotten was what she wanted.

Can we climb this mountain? I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go

I think this doesnt just apply to relationships. I think it is more about overcoming their personal obstacles together. Fx her low self asteem, which I think is one of her issues.THe getting higher means getting a better and more clear view on things. He is basically opening her eyes/helping her.

We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

Her issues, or potential as i might be, is something she has had since she Was Young, and now they are doing something about it.

And sometimes you close your eyes and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

(Since I have moved a bunch, this part appeals to me. It might also cause me to understand it as I want to but I'm gonna try decoding it anyways.) She is thinking back to The Beginnig of her problems and still the place she was happy. The place where she was more comfortable.

They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

She has travelled far, my guess' not physically but personally/mentally, and she is now tired, but she doesnt wanna stop, although it might have been a rough ride. She is still stuck in her problems (the devils water). right now she doesnt have to (1) accept them or (2) maybe think about them-I'm not sure ( you dont have to drink right now). (but you can dip your feet) means (1)- pause in them a bit before the hard part begins: trusting herself, gaining confidence, solving her problems. or (2) letting her negative thoughts being something she can hold on to. I know it sounds wierd or wrong, but messed up people are not unlikely to stick with their depressed feelings since it is easier. (every once in a little while) only if you have to.

I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know

He doenst look like a savior, but it is still so much closer than you would belive.

Now I think I acidentally de-coded it wrong so it would match with the sadness or despair I sometimes feel, but oh well :)

this song means a lot to me right now.

"Can we climb this mountain? I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go"

i think in this part, this mountain is the steps in this relationship. it's very young, but, they are moving very fast into it. and, if they don't slow down in this relationship, they believe their relationship with the other person won't last.

i believe this girl has been with multiple men, and everytime, she thinks he's the one or perfection. when in the end, she realizes, he wasn't as great as she thought he was.

"jesus" as meaning to a loving, caring, will-never-hurt-you man. perfection.

Thank you so much MG17. Didn't anyone on the first 7 pages of this song watch the music video? The girl falls in love withe the guy, and they are all happy and climbing mountains (haha) and doing other romantic "in love" types of things, and then if I remember correctly, she catches him with another women, and she cries, and whatnot. The whole time she thought she had found a great guy she was actually seeing something in him that really wasn't there.

i hav to disagree w/ shotgunXXXwedding
i think that said girl hasnt found th perfect guy
i think this about a girl who has gotten so desperate that she just went for some guy that even though he acts like a gd guy be in reality is nothing like jesus or in other words a not so gd guy
meanwhile hes trying to help her but hes reminding her it'll take time
th devil's water is obviously like th forbidden fruit and he's telling her that its not all that great so relax and just dip ur feet
th devils water can be many things but my moneys on sex. this may be directed towards a younger person (perhaps a daughter like figure to th speaker)

Their is to much to be said about this song than I could write. That's what I think makes it so great.

To me there are three important "characters" in this song: a girl and two boys.

The song is told from the perspective of the boy who "doesn't look a thing like jesus" to the girl who "sits there in her heartache" because she's been waiting on some "beautiful boy" to come down on shining armour her entire life.
The girl as disregarded the fact that the singer might not look like the man of her dreams but he is "more than she'll ever know"

The "beautiful boy" isn't directly mentioned in the song because the singer knows it is a subject that he has to tread carefully. The girl thinks she has found someone who will "save her from her old ways" but finds more disapointment, though she can't admitt it to herself.

The girl has been lost in a cycle of not accepting anything less than pefection, which has thrown her into a world of absolutes. Things are either going great or terrible. So while she's caught up in these delusion's about this one guy, she sometimes closes her eyes and imagines "the place where [she] used to live when [she] was young." She starts to think whether or not this man really the man she thinks he is and occasionally realises the mistake she made with the singer by not letting them "take it slow" causing them to spiral out of control like they were "on the back of a hurricane." This hurricane was the accumulation of all of her expectations that eventually blows the singer completely away because of the man she thought she needed.

The song shifts mood a towards the end when the singer tells the girl not to think in black and white so much. She needs to free herself from what she thinks she should do and start living by what it's "time" for her to do. The girl is in a pattern of letting external forces control her life, i.e. "the devils water" to the point of constant indulgance or utter abstainence and dispraisal.

The best object to compair to the devils water whould be alcohol, which honestly "ain't so sweet" but that doesn't mean that the girl should just never drink. Alcohol has just as much control over addicts as it has on abstainers. True control is learned by moderation and understanding that there is a time and a place for everything and that might not be "right know." But the singer tells the girl not to be afraid to "dip [her] feet every one and a little while"

This marks the turning point in the song. The singer repeats the chorus as an indication that his message has finally gone through. "He doesn't look a thing like Jesus" (the singer isn't what she expected) "but he talks like a gentalman like you imagined when you were young" (but he is what she wanted). The singer is the the knight that the girl has always dreamed of.

More than she'll ever know.

Okay, I haven't all one hundred and something replies to this but I'm going to go a different direction than all the ones I have read so far.

I don't think the guy the girl in the song meets is her savior. I think its the representation of the devil or some other agent of evil. He comes along and while he doesn't look like a good guy, he sure is a smooth talker as the devil is always said to be. The smooth talk represented in the second verse about taking things slow and what not. However in the third verse "burning the highway skyline" I think refers to burning bridges and "the hurricane that started turning when you were young" refers to he setting herself up for failure in the future, by making poor decisions in the past or her willingness to believe in this guy that has tricked her. Now in the fourth verse I think the song is talking about all of the temptation she has given into while following this guy (the devil). She hasn't totally taken the plunge but she is dipping her toes in the water to see how it feels. Possibly a metaphor for drug use or something along those lines.

Just wanted to put up an alternative viewpoint to what ever one else has said. Let me know what you think.

I believe this song is about a girl who has changed for the worse from when she was young. She has a heartache of some kind (possibly a bad relationship, depression, etc) and expects some guy to save her from it. She has an image of what this guy will look like, talk like, act like, etc. But some totally different guy comes along and she reacts to this guy in ways she didn't know was possible, possibly even better than the "ideal" guy. He makes her feel alive again/young again. He understands the difficulties in her past and is willing to work with her to overcome them, thus them developing a relationship slowly. I believe that they develop their relationship much faster than expected, thus the lyrics "We're burning down the highway skyline". They end up falling in love and she gets her childhood innocence back. Sometimes the girl is remembered of her past and the guy tells her it's okay, the past is the past, but we can make the future better. He is the guy who ends up saving her and makes her move forward, more than he ever knows.
