The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

to me, it shows the true bond of a brother and a sister. I found out when I turned 21 that I have a 16 year old brother. We immediatly bonded in a way I can't describe. Even with 16 years apart and never meeting, he and I bonded. A sibling bond is a bond that can not be recreated.

Katie was sick also. I'm not sure what. Andrew never specified in any interviews, but he started to write it for her when she was sick. I think that's what the first verse was about..

Then after he was diagnosed and she ended up being a positive donor, he finished the song. I think that's why it says in the second verse "
just all the love behind this song makes it so beautiful, and it also made me consider donating some of my bone marrow, and keeping some aside for my family incase something happens.
i love this song. how awesome must it be to have andrew for a brother. i agree that this song really shows the bond between siblings. i have 2 older brothers and 1 older sister (5, 6, and 7 years older, respectively), and even though we may all fight at times, we are always there for each other, and nothing can break that.
haven't heard this one either, but i gotta get to 10 =]
