Heya Tom, it's Bob, from the office down the hall
Good to see you buddy, how've you been?
Thing have been okay for me except that I'm a zombie now
I really wish you'd let us in
I think I speak for all of us when I say I understand
Why you folks might hesitate to submit to our demand
But here's an FYI: you're all gonna die screaming

All we want to do is eat your brains
We're not unreasonable, I mean, no one's gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We're at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise
If you open up the door
We'll all come inside and eat your brains

I don't want to nitpick, Tom, but is this really your plan?
Spend your whole life locked inside a mall?
Maybe that's okay for now but someday you'll be out of food and guns
And then you'll have to make the call
I'm not surprised to see you haven't thought it through enough
You never had the head for all that bigger picture stuff
But Tom, that's what I do, and I plan on eating you slowly

All we want to do is eat your brains
We're not unreasonable, I mean, no one's gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We're at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise
If you open up the doors
We'll all come inside and eat your brains

I'd like to help you Tom, in any way I can
I sure appreciate the way you're working with me
I'm not a monster Tom, well, technically I am
I guess I am

I've got another meeting Tom, maybe we could wrap it up
Know we'll get to common ground somehow
Meanwhile I'll report back to my colleagues who were chewing on the doors
I guess we'll table this for now
I'm glad to see you take constructive criticism well
Thank you for your time I know we're all busy as hell
And we'll put this thing to bed
When I bash your head open

All we want to do is eat your brains
We're not unreasonable, I mean, no one's gonna eat your eyes
All we want to do is eat your brains
We're at an impasse here, maybe we should compromise
If you open up the door
We'll all come inside and eat your brains

General Comment:On the off chance anyone doesn't know: you can listen to all of Jonathan's music on his website (jonathancoulton.com/store/…) and download the songs for a buck each (some of them are free downloads). If you like this one, I suggest also "Chiron Beta Prime" and "Skullcrusher Mountain".

General Comment:Re: Your Brains talks about being the last guy standing for an idea. Even when it feels like you are being massed by say a horde of zombies or something. You might be wrong but you refuse to let them take your power to think as symbolized by the brain. I like it because he comically represents his resiliancy from the viewpoint of the oppresser. He does a great job because it gets people to think that is insane why would anyone give into that? Which is a good question. Why would anyone give into logic like that?
The brains/eyes thing is a joke but the joke has meaning. It means that they won't stop you from seeing the world but they do want to control what you think of it as symbolized by the brain.
Xaq27 you wouldn't be dead you would be undead because you would be infested by the zombie mennace. Thats how zombie raids work. If it was a small group of zombies they wouldn't be hard to control and they certainly wouldn't be able to take over the world as portrayed in several zombie movies. They spread the infection. Thus their numbers grow and they become more powerful.
This isn't about seeing a certain amount in the song it is about noticing his comparisons and seeing what he is saying. If something is funny than it has to be saying something. That is how irony works. If there is no irony than it isn't funny. If there isn't meaning there isn't irony. It all starts with meaning that is how literature works.

My Interpretation:Xaq27, I'm pretty sure the brains/eyes line is mostly just there for the funny but I think in the song Bob the zombie is trying (rather unsuccessfully) to assure Tom that they are not bloodthirsty fiends but reasonable zombiefolk. Sure, they hunger incessantly for brains but they're not monsters who run around eating people's eyeballs. Which for some reason (perhaps the fact that he's incapable of higher brain functions do to decomposition) he sees eating someone's eyes as a much greater offense that simply devouring their brains.

Song Meaning:Coulton worked in the corporate world before doing music. When brainstorming songs, he thought, "What if that annoying jerkwad that works in every office in existence were to become a zombie?" Then he had that zombie find the coworker who hates that guy and annoy the crap out of him. That is pretty much the deepest meaning you are going to get from this song, which is why I love it.

General Comment:I figured the "We're not unreasonable/I mean no one's gonna eat your eyes" lines were supposed to be funny, just like the 'compromise' lines ("If YOU open up the door, WE'LL all come inside and eat your brains")

General Comment:oh, and gotta give props where props are due, the Mall reference can easily be dated back to Romero's original Dawn of the Dead, and that's what springs to mind when I hear that line :)

General Comment:not meant to be taken seriously, nice office jargon gives it an "office space of the dead" feel. great song. and it's a ridiculous scenario that "has" never happened, yet. :)

General Comment:3Hackbug is right. This song is not meant to be taken seriously. Zombies don't exist. Alot of Coulton's songs are just meant to be funny. So yeah, this song is just about a rediculous scenario that would never happen.
