I don't see the man as a stalker, I see him more as very much under her radar as a love interest. I see the picture as a big group picture. She's not noticing him. He's not standing out to her. But he's there and he notices her. He's lying in the reeds of her mind, he's there but she just doesn't see him.

If he was a stalker he wouldn't be thinking, "It's all wrong." He'd just think "It's all right." The doubt makes him more sane to me.

ok this song has the same e minor pattern as roygbiv but thats it. boc's song is very different in its structure. about this song... it sounds very sincere (like a lot of radiohead) which, combined with the lyrics of the chorus, make it sound like a love song to a casual listener.

but once i read the posts here describing thom as being a stalker in the song, i took a different perspective and do you know what? it sounds so different! its freaking creepy now, like a twisted radiohead 'every breath you take' in terms of deceptive meaning. still awesome song and the end is...awesome. i don't care what band it sounds like or any of that crap, it sounds good!

Coldplay and Keane stole Radiohead's old clothes, so it's only fair that Thom's taken them back. Musically this song reminds me more of early Human League; the vocals remind me strongly of Dimbodius.

Meaningwise, the song is a bit of a Morrissey mope, but Thom and co pull it off beautifully. Great stuff indeed.

I think the lyrics as originally posted are spot on. I wonder if the key to this song is -

This made me think of the Millais painting of Ophelia. She dreamed of marrying Hamlet -

Though he'd never shown any particular interst in her. After the death of his father Hamlet is mad with grief and treats Ophelia cruelly -

Ophelia must have thought it predestined for her to marry Hamlet, her father Polonius was the king's advisor -

When Hamlet mistakenly kills Polonius Ophelia is driven mad with grief and drowns herself in a stream -

I think this is kind of a pressured relationship. You know its like someone who really likes someone but that other person is all talk and no action. And is selfish. But both are really desperate for love so they pretend to love each other. This song actually kind of reminds me of the first part of the book The Stranger by Albert Camus

I think this is a love song with a twist.It's about the self-destructive relationship between man and nature and the fact that in the end they will destroy eachother.And the song seems to be written to fit both viewpoints.It's equilibrium.Man and nature are ultimately one and the same and need eachother.Man is nature's masterpiece and they need eachother but are going to destroy eachother.very sad

I think this song is about about a person who knows he is trapped in this world what includes him to have needs and one of his needs is to be with someone.And love is kind of trap too.'Cause youre depending on someone.Thats because Thom says at the end of the song:
It's all wrong
It's all right
It's all wrong
Its wrong to be with someone knowing it's because you need it but its right 'cause needing someone is something that's part of your being.

The proper lyrics are "lying in the reeds." What "lies in the reeds?" Alligators seeking prey or hunting birds waiting for a bird to drop after being shot are lying in the reeds. This song goes beyond just ordinary love and into obsession/stalking.

This song to me seems to be about a man who is desperately waiting on his chance with this woman he loves.

The "I'm the next act waiting in the wings" line confirms that he is waiting on her. Perhaps they are only friends but he wants more.

It is obvious too that he is slightly bitter in the way he feels ignored by his love.

The line that says "I only stick with you because there are no others" seems to indicate that he believes she is the only one for him. His soul mate.

"I'm in the middle of the picture lying in the leaves" sounds like a metaphor for how he feels placed in this woman's life. Smack dab in the middle waiting.

The end climax is the most haunting of the song.

Sounds like he is in a lot of pain. Unrequited love.

WAKE UP PEOPLE! Don't any of you listen to Boards of Canada? All I Need sounds VERY SIMILAR to Roygbiv by BoC!!!! Sure they didn't steal notes, but without Thom's voice and that rock out part at the end they sound a hell of a lot alike. Good song though...both are good...but not as good as 15 Step :)

I believe the lyrics are,
lying in the reeds and not leaves. This is a significant difference as reeds grow tall and would be a place to hide. Therefore, I believe this song is about a stalker. This is NOT a love song.

These are the correct lyrics as I hearad them. Except for the "It's all wrong, it's all right" part, to me, it sounds like he's just saying "it's all" over and over.

I agree that this song is beautiful, but I was surprised by the nature of the climax. Sounded like something straight out of Coldplay or Keane. So melodic and almost conventionally so with the piano. But beautiful nonetheless. Agree that this is one of the best off the new album.
