Lyrics for All I Need as interpreted by black_cow_of_death

All I Need Lyrics
I am the next act waiting in the wings
I am an animal trapped in your hot car
I am all the days that you choose to ignore

You are all I need
You are all I need
I am in the middle of your picture
Lying in the reeds

I am a moth who just wants to share your light
I’m just an insect trying to get out of the night
I only stick with you because there are no others

You are all I need
You are all I need
I am in the middle of your picture
Lying in the reeds

It's all wrong
It's all right
It's all right
It's all wrong
It's all right
It's all right
It's all right

For those of you who are curious as to what the band have said about the songs, I have most of the quotes from the interviews in my blog:
http://radioheadinrainbows.blogspot.com/

For those of you who insist Radiohead are a Christian rock band, read this please:

I agree with wonderb. I don't think obsession is necessarily negative. The narrator seems to feel they are both destined to be together.

However you want to interpret this, there's no doubt this song is about obsession. Although the tenacity and fortitude are admirable in his lyrics. No doubt there's the negative connotation of obsession.

i have to reply to a user saying that the line 'i only stick with you, because there are no others' means he would take someone else if the option were there.

i believe he means that there are no others for him to take because none of them even come close to the person he's talking about. and he only sticks with that person because his feeling and love for that person don't give him a choice.

Like many others that have commented -
The character in focus is intent and totally immersed in the one who is 'all [he] needs'.
He's 'in the middle of [her] picture', but is 'lying in the reeds' - present in her life but not a focus. He is screaming out in the middle of her picture because he wants her to notice him, rather then the 'next act'

Divided Pie, that's a beautiful and interesting interpretation.

On a very basic level, consider this is the "anti-Creep".

Contrast wishing "I was special / you're so fucking special"...
With I "only stick with you/ because there are no others".

I posted earlier that I felt this song was about 'Death.' Let me elaborate on that.

More specifically, I feel like this song is about Cancer.

For anyone who has had a close family member who is fighting the disease, these lyrics ring incredibly true.

Specifically, these lines:

I am the next act waiting in the wings
I am an animal trapped in your hot car
I am all the days that you choose to ignore

Convey the insidiousness of the disease. How it grows inside a body, often going unnoticed until it's too late.

This line really gets me:

I am in the middle of your picture
Lying in the reeds

For a family dealing with this, it is always hanging over everything. You can see it in the family photo that gets sent out at Christmas time.

Lastly, the "It's all wrong, it's all right" expresses the ups and downs of the battle (chemo, radiation, etc.). Hopeful and optimistic one day, full of despair the next. The internal struggle between facing the gravity of the situation and trying to carry on with a normal life at the same time.

The fact that this song is open to so many interpretations show how brilliant it really is.

I'm not sure I'll ever understand what this song is about because love is such a puzzle to me. When I listen to this song it means different things to me depending on how i feel at that moment. But I only relate to the song completely when I feel alone and lost because I am not with the person I love. I do think it's a song about need, but I don't think it's not about love. Thom Yorke said it's about obsession, but he hasn't said much about the song. I think our interpretation depends on who we are and where we are at when we listen to it. It's easy to dismiss it as a song about someone who only stays with a person because they don't see any other avenues. I think that's a valid interpretation sometimes. I think it's also valid to hear that it's about someone who feels so worthless that he can't envision anyone else wanting to be with him, in which case it would be about the need not to be alone and not really love. And I understand that it's not clear in the song why the narrator is alone, and 'waiting in the wings', the 'next act'... is this supposed to be about an existing relationship where the narrator is not the priority for the person he needs? Or is it about someone who knows he will be with this person but isn't able to be there yet and is suffering? 'I am all the days that you choose to ignore' is about a choice, a decision, so I guess it might be about someone deliberately not making him her priority.

This song's meaning evolved for me as I changed since I first listened to it. I was (and am) alone, and I didn't like it. I have learned since then that it is one of the most important things we can do in our life. It's about learning to understand and love who we are. I no longer relate to this song. I think it's about someone who hasn't learned that the only way to be alive and the only way to experience life to its fullest is to be alone first, and understand that love is not about settling for someone.

"I am the next act waiting in the wings
I am an animal trapped in your hot car
I am all the days that you choose to ignore"

when you are about to go on stage to perform there is an uneasy anxious feeling of vulnarability. helplessness overwhelmes knowing that you must go on and you cant turn back. knowing your one step away from bearing your naked soul on stage. just the same an animal trapped in a hot car is in an uneasy, defenceless, distressed, vulnarable position. the nebulous almost purgatory state you feel in these scenarios are reminicant of the days you choose to ignor. for reasons such as feeling defenceless or anxiety. these days become hazy and uneasy to think about.
maybe i dont make sense at all.
i probably dont but it makes sence in my head i guess...

i really don't think this is a love song at all, it's about need, low self confidence, and dependence. the character yorke portrays is obsessive and weak.

"I am a moth who just wants to share your light" really shows that the character has nothing else to live for but the successes i.e. "light" of their obsession

Well, the video was made after the song was released, and Radiohead decided to endorse it, but it wasn't made by them.

The entire album can be interpreted in different ways, of course, but it is primarily about love relationships. It is more than that, though. Most of the songs Thom Yorke writes are not about just one thing, but he did mention in interviews that at the time when he wrote these songs he was trying to get away from writing about politics and climate change. Obviously does issues are always at least in the back of his head so they come out in some of the imagery.

Trying to find out what a song means is not absolute science. I'm sure that even for the artist who writes something its meaning changes with time. A particular song evokes different responses in us, and there is no right or wrong interpretation.

I'm afraid trying to get what the artist meant is probably impossible to do 100% accurately. But Thom said it's about obsession. There are many quotes but you'd have to google them to find them.

I think this songs about the guy in love with this girl although she doesn't take much notice or care of him.

"I am a moth who just wants to share your light"

Quite possibly referring to moths that are attracted to lights and end up dieing because of it. Meaning he is like a moth and she is the light, he is attracted and in love with this women but when he gets to her she doesn't want him and kills him, not literally though.

"I am in the middle of your picture
Lying in the reeds"

Gives off an image that he is literally in lying low in a picture behind some reeds looking up at the girl he loves while she has no idea he's there and is smiling at the camera. Giving the impression that she doesn't take notice of him.

The same goes to the line, "I am an animal trapped in your hot car". Once again, she doesn't care about him and leaves him dieing in the hot car.

Please provide evidence if you have it. I really would like to know. It would be shocking to me if this song were written for any other purpose than what I described above, given the 'official' music video endorsed by Radiohead.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this song is intended as a love song, or about obsession, since that's what Thom Yorke said in an interview.

Come on people -- please -- before you post something about this song, for the sake of discussion please go watch the video first.

This song is about the "relationship" we have with those in Third-World countries that make our belongings, and it is written from the perspective of one of those children that makes our shoes. These kids "need" us in the most appalling sort of way - because we "provide" them with jobs so that they can support their families, while our children go to school and get educations. The scenery of the video seems to depict an Eastern Asian country, and the line "lying in the reeds" seems to be a Vietnam war reference. There is a certain fury in the music during the lines "It's all wrong...it's all right", and the muddiness of the words here seem to convey that we have muddied the difference between wrong and right so much that it's hard to tell the two apart.

In the end, "You are all I need" is 1 part pain and brokenness from the perspective of the Asian child, and 1 part sarcasm from the voice of Thom Yorke.

I don't see them as strikly christian. They often refer to a higher power but it can be interpreted many ways by many religions.
