This town is his cause burying my neck
This air it takes off, without rushing, without haste

The streets are in distress,
The sun suffocates behind darkened skies
The grass is growing under my feet
I'm thinking it wont be long before you get

The line-up seems endless,
Underneath the salvation sign
We are the dead ones, we are the lost cause
We are the people who will not blame ourselves from this cause

The city, the city is haunted,
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
There's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls)

Every step I take,
I leave a small piece of myself behind
Soon there will be nothing left

The cracks in the pavement,
Match the cracks in their weathered skin,
The skies a brick wall, the clouds a juggernaut
Each day as we know
I stare in amazement, I can't believe this is where I live
Every breath I take, I feel my lungs fail

The city, the city is haunted,
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
There's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls)

Our steps seal fate
Our steps seal fate
(this is our celebration, come join the lost souls)
(this is our celebration, come join the lost souls)

The city, the city is haunted
Walk with us

The city, the city is haunted,
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
There's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls)

General Comment:[George:] This town has its claws buried in my neck
This town, it takes lives, without mercy, without hate

(The city in which I live in is metaphorically attached to my DNA. There's no escape. This place destroys or ends lives not caring who the damage is inflicted upon. nothing's personal.)

[Dallas:] The streets are in distress
The sun suffocates behind darkened skies

(As we suffer in these streets, the "sun" tries to shed light on why this happens but the "clouds" make it impossible.)

[George:] The grass is growing on top of my feet
I'm sinking, won't be long, before I'm too deep to run

(grass grows from neglect, I'm overwhelmed by rising water to the point of being trapped.)

[Dallas:] The line up seems endless
    Underneath the salvation signs.

(The line for supplies seem to not end, as we wait for help.)

[George:] We are the dead ones, we are the lost cause
We are the bend before the break. Our steps seal our fate.

(We are forgotten, we are the ones who are unreachable, we will endure until the end, our steps will set us up for success or failure.)

    [Chorus:]
Because this city, this city is haunted
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
And there's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls).

(This city has something lingering and lurking, from people who have lived through the worst, either natural devastation or domestic family tragedies,
we feel there's no one to save our souls from our impending doom.)

[George:] Every step I take I leave a small piece
Of myself behind. Soon there will be nothing left.

(Leaving clues for someone to find us, A foot print, the prints will end sometime.)

[Dallas:] The cracks in the pavement,
Match the cracks in their weathered skin

(The poor conditions they live in leave scars upon them.)

[George:] The sky's a brick wall
    The ground's a juggernaut
Each day they get a bit closer
    Between them, I am caught.

(The sky seems unreachable and the ground is unbreakable)

    [Dallas:] I stare in amazement,
I can't believe this is where I live.

(He looks in horror, disbelief, sadness and a strange sense of honor of being here)

[George:] Every breath I take I feel my lungs seal
This breeze feels more like shards of glass I'm more scars than skin

(With every breath breathing becomes difficult, The breeze is full of skin piercing debris and he realizes he is cover with cuts.)

    [Chorus:]
Because this city, this city is haunted
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
And there's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls).

[George:] Our steps seal fate, our steps seal fate.

(What we do will determine who we are)

    This is our celebration
    Come join the lost souls
    [x2]

(Let's celebrate what we have, come join us and help us through this)

[Dallas:] This city, this city is haunted.

    (There's something here)

[George:] Oh! Walk with us. Oh! Down. Walk with us.

(The help finally arrives to save some of them, if you hear them.)

    [Chorus:]
This city, this city is haunted
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
And there's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls).

When i first heard this song in early 2006 I immediately thought of New Orleans and all of Louisiana. Then as I started to dissect the lyrics, it started to resemble of a city with poverty, famine and no hope for survival. Of course, I started seeing similarities in these lyrics in which i saw in my life. My mother left me when I was 9, harsh family situations and no hope for a future. I live in a city filled with divorced children, single parents and poverty. yet I love my city, without these hardships, I couldn't be the man I am today. I hoped these lyrics helped and I hope you enjoyed.

My Interpretation:At first I was kind of skeptical, but I think CaptainZaltan is on the right track.

I think this song has to do with some homelessness/poverty issues in a major city, and the singer's dismay at living in this poverty-stricken place.

    >This town, it takes life without mercy, without hate.
Refers to people dying of the cold and hunger, or just the harsh life on the street. The death that takes them is without mercy, but it's also without malice. There's no murder involved, just the cold, ruthless, uncaring death on the street.

    >The cracks in the pavement match the cracks in their weathered skin
Refers to people who are so accustomed to living outside that their skins are weathered and cracked.

    >The streets are in distress
Refers to the fact that the streets are filled with suffering

    >The lineup seems endless, underneath the salvation sign.
I imagine that this refers to a line of people waiting for food or shelter at a religious charity. The line of people is so long that "the lineup seems endless", and they're standing underneath a large cross that adorns the charity building.

    >This city is haunted by ghosts from broken homes ... there's no hope left for these souls
This is a metaphor for the starving, freezing people in the city. They're referred to as "ghosts", because they're seen as nameless, faceless shapes rather than actual human beings. And there's no hope for them because they feel hopeless.

All the rest of the lines are about the singer's shame and amazement at what he's seeing in this city, but that he's unable to leave.

    >This town has its claws buried in my neck
This is a metaphor for being stuck somewhere. He can't run away because its claws are buried in his neck.

    >The grass is growing under my feet, I'm thinking it won't be long before I'm too deep to run
Another metaphor. He's saying that the grass is growing all around him and pretty soon he's going to be too deep in it to be able to untangle himself.

    >The sky's a brick wall, the ground's a juggernaut... between them I am caught.
    Again, saying he's stuck here.

    >I stare in amazement, I can't believe this is where I live.
Self-explanatory. He's amazed at all the suffering around him.

I think by the end of the song, he sort of accepts that this city is a part of who he is and invites the listener to "come join the lost souls" and "come walk with us".

Lyric Correction:These lyrics are completely wrong. Correct lyrics:

This town has its claws buried in my neck
This town, it takes life without mercy, without hate

    The streets are in distress
The sun suffocates behind darkened skies
The grass is growing under my feet
I'm thinking it won't be long before I'm too deep to run

    The lineup seems endless
    Underneath the salvation sign
We are the dead ones, we are the lost cause
We are the bend before the break, our steps seal fate

Because this city, this city is haunted
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
There's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls)

Every step I take, I leave a small piece of myself behind
Soon there will be nothing left

    The cracks in the pavement
Match the cracks in their weathered skin
    The sky's a brick wall, the ground's a juggernaut
Each day they get a bit closer, between them, I am caught
    I stare in amazement
I can't believe this is where I live

Every breath I take, I feel my lungs seal
This breeze feels more like shards of glass

Because this city, this city is haunted
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted
There's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls)

    Our steps seal fate
    Our steps seal fate

This is our celebration, come join the lost souls
This is our celebration, come join the lost souls.

This city, this city is haunted.
    Come walk with us all
    Come walk with us.

This city, this city is haunted
By ghosts (ghosts) from broken homes (homes)
Because this city, this city is haunted,
There's no hope (hope) left for these souls (souls)

General Comment:Im from st. catharines, this song could be about the raft which is a home for children who run away from home or dont want to live with there parents, it could also be about how much st. catharines has changed due to the ppl that have moved to the downtown region which are mostly white trash drugys

General Comment:I don't think this song is about a city that is literally haunted by ghosts. Instead I think it is about growing up or living in a city where your destined to become nothing. It seems like its about a really shitty city where everyone is just a ghost.

"The line up seems endless underneath the salvation signs" People are clinging to their last bits of hope given to them by others' promises.

Everything about this song is amazing. I love George's screams and Dallas's beautiful backup. My favorite part is the whole song from beginning to end. Very powerful.

Song Meaning:Personally, I think that this song doesn't literally mean a haunted town - but the song will mean something different to anyone on a personal level. I think it has to do with being trapped where you live. Where that area just drags everyone down with it, haunted by the misfortunes of it's inhabitants.

"This town has its claws buried in my neck,
This town - it takes life without mercy, without hate"

That means to me, it grabs you, and keeps you there, no matter how badly you want to leave & it takes your dreams and life down with it, "without mercy, without hate" because it doesn't have a conscience, its just an inanimate object. It's just a doomed ghost town.

"I'm sinking, it won't be to long until before I'm too deep to run " that just strengthens my opinion on my eyes, maybe not yours though.

"Because this city, this city is haunted by ghosts from broken homes
Because this city, this city is haunted, there's no hope, left for these souls"

That means to me, broken homes - broken dreams. Just a plague on this area, it's a dead end for the people that live there. Souls doesn't necessarily mean *dead* you know.

I am not going to pick apart the entire song through my eyes, but basically: this town is a dead end, its trapping him, and every day that goes on he gets brought down further and further until theres no where else to go but die there.

Song Meaning:its talking about the loss of humanity in the world. and we are trapped here on it. doomed for destruction with no hope. We've become shallow shells with our pop culture and reality tv shows, no longer contemplating the meaning of our existance. We're to busy stepping on one another trying to get to the top of a false ideology. but maybe im wrong...

    My Interpretation:This song hit me.

To me it describes all those kids/young adults who come from a broken home. Not only is their home broken but the city they/lived are from is also and is crushing them everyday. It doesn't matter who they are who their parent's are this town eats up everyone.

" They keep trying but this town...
Every step I take I leave a small piece of myself behind
Soon there will be nothing left
(The cranks in the pavement, match the cracks in their weathered skin)
    The sky's a brick wall, the ground's a juggernaut.
Each day they get a bit closer, between them, I am caught
(As I stare in amazement, I can't believe this is where I live)
Every breathe I take, I feel my lungs seal
This breeze feels more like shards of glass, I'm more scars than skin."

So now their fates are sealed, because of all these outside forces eating at these ghosts.

"This is our celebration, come join the lost souls "

I'm from a spit home this so this song hits me and my hometown is broken.
