this shows that you shouldnt wait for somthing you should go and do somthing about it
I think that would have captured what is is to really be a hero. They put their loved ones at a distance to keep them safe from their secret lives and in the end it seems like they're avoiding everyone when in reality they've given up everything for their love. So even a hero's love isn't enough for them to be happy.
Even with all this chaos in their lives they can't stand by and just be the person their loved one's wish they had, because they would always be in danger if someone wasn't out there stopping all the violence that eventually ends up on your doorstep.
Or that's just how I see it. The other way just sounds iffy.

anyway on to the meaning.
for me the opening lyrics are about a man lying to himself about his relationship. then he snaps back into reality.

the chorus now shows that the relationship needs couceling (the hero) but the boy isnt going to wait for the councelors to "have time". he will hold onto the people he loves but in the end he knows he'll have to watch them walk away.
now he is telling the girl that he was once told that love would save everyone. but now he doubts the truth of this statement as his dealings with love have left him with pain and bruised hearts.

he realises his chance has came to be happy. he sends his love to the girl and hopes she'll return it. but he still doubts himself and fears that it wont be enough.

he is thinking to himself at this point and comes to the conclusion that their friends and family are watching them both wondering what will become of them. but they are leaving them nonetheless. wether the boy gets his girl or not matters not to them.
