How has no one figured this out yet? This song is written to himself. Everyone of his love songs tells of how it hurts so much that he wants to die. Read the lyrics for the Don't Close your eyes album. He's telling himself to let go of this weakness. This part of him he hates but never goes away. "Razors roses and a black tommorow" is a direct reference to the song swallowing razorblades.

Generation Y, please shut the fuck up and stop tainting a iconic Australian band with your idiocy.
If you had half a brain you would try and look behind the lyrics as structured and try to apply them to something that is more substantial than over emotionalism in blind love, heart ache and the weak exit of suicide by even weaker people. The band have even admitted that this song gets interpreted the wrong way. In fact, you people are pretty much giving this song the same ideology to what the song is speaking out against...
Read past what you want something to be and look at it for what it is. You want it to be about a guy or girl who have been dumped because then you can relate to it more and try and convince yourself that this song speaks to you because of that. Get over your selfish reasons for enjoying somebody else's art.

Song writers write based on trying to send a message.
It's this simple i believe. Self harm is not a way to get attention. It does seem like he is bashing out on the other emo bands. Which is true in a sense read and portray your own way. But then it's like he's also trying to cross the message of being strong. Live above trends, emo trends. Starting to make sense?
My take is this.

Somewhere along the lines of a girl he might have had relations with. That of course imposed self harm to get his attention. Him being a strong willed/caring individual falls for this.

He then becomes overly infatuated with her. Being the kind person he is he loves without question. Girls not used to this and turns opposite to what she acts. He slowly pushes her away because of her problems and him just being caring. Making everything seem like it's his fault, and he slowly falls prey to this evil. It gets to the point where he indulges so much so quickly she's already gone. Hence saying goodbye.
Girl go's back out into the world and continues the life she had of getting used hurt etc etc.

He's slowing coming back to sense with what was right and see's that over time. So when she does come back it's too late. He's moved on, exclaiming to her these lyrics in a way. She's dead to him he exclaims in the last verse. Then continues the reasons why she is here.

So therefore this song could be about being a strong willed individual tempted by something bad, going threw it and seeing the bad. Not giving into wrong himself but rising above it in the end. To send a message out for others to live intelligently not ignorantly. Cause as said in interviews by the band it's about downing the emo trend. Trying to help people to realize life not forget it. Because as i said usually writers write about something portrayed to them in some way. Portraying a message to others is all. Hope this helped

anyway, i think the song is talking to a guy, who broke a girls heart. It's telling him how much of a cunt he was. And that he is doing everything to get her back, threating suicide and self harming. But its saying she doesnt deserve that, as he hurt her, and should just let go, because she is gone.

Basically, i think it's about, what alot of you touched on i guess, a guy who is sort of attention seeking, sending empty threats, trying to get back a girl who he hurt, and has left him. Calling him a pussy.
