Lyrics for Slow Dancing In A Burning Room as interpreted by InfraRecon

Slow Dancing In A Burning Room Lyrics
It's not a silly little moment
It's not the storm before the calm
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love we've been working on

Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms
Nobody's gonna come and save you
We pulled too many false alarms

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw

I'll make the most of all the sadness
You'll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Go cry about it, why don't you?
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Don't you think we oughta know by now?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?

love that part. wow.

It's a failed relationship. On and off. on and off. It only gets worse everytime.

Amazing Song. Brutally honest. haha.

yeah i always interpreted the line.. "you were the one i tried to draw".. like a poker or blackjack hand.. drawing something good or awesome.

but literally drawing a pretty face of someone and wishing you had them makes sense too.

this song kicks my ass

I was given this song,an acoustic version taken from some live village session. It's very sparse and clear.

It is one of the most painful songs ive ever heard - describing the slow burn of a destructive relationship that never comes together but which was valued highly by both nonetheless.

hmm..I think this song means that they both know the relationship there in is bad,and theyve been working on it for a while but its doomed, and shes acting like its all his fault, and not letting him be upset.

This song just puts the last six months of my life in music.
Can't think of any other song which could best describe what i've been through...
---------------------------------------

For me the song is about a guy who loves a girl very much even though he knows the relationship will not be an easy one. But still he keeps on loving her, keeps working on the relationship ["This is the deep and dying breath of
This love we've been working on"] coz he just can't stop...

The girl, on her side does not see it that way... she's
already made herself to the idea that the relationship is truly over even though she did had some feelings for the guy (or thought she had) ["I was the one you always dreamed of"], but now she know it's over and she took it kind of well . And this the guy can't understand this easily["Go cry about it, why don't you?" ]. And he still loves her very much even after all this ["Can't seem to hold you like I want to, So I can feel you in my arms"]

The part which speaks to me the most is:

"You'll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand"

Coz really she can't understand what i'm going through and my god she does hurt me... still.

John Mayer is one of my favorite artists, he's just pure
genius. The whole of Continuum proves that...

I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw

Since there has been a lot of discussion on the meaning of draw, I thought I would give my take. When I heard this I line I immediately took it as draw in the sense of "draw in". Like he saw her as a challenge, like her obviously, but he put effort into her. I guess I was thinking of draw as slang for "try to talk this girl into dating me..."

This song isn't about a breakup in the traditional sense - it's about a relationship that can never "be". I think the best guess is that it's about an affair between two people (one or both is committed to another person). They want to be together but they're in a no-win situation...or a risky situation (burning room). "We're going down...we're doomed" means they're both in for alot of pain - no matter which route they take. Or it could refer to the affair being discovered.
The two people obviously have a history together. "You were the one I tried to draw" just means he tried to figure her out (she's complicated). "How dare you say it's nothing to me" means she never really believed that he loved her (maybe he didn't show it enough).
My take: these two people were once in a committed relationship but are now with different people. But they have somehow come together again and realize that they still love each other - but it can't work.

So many seem confued by the "I was the one you always dreamed of, You were the one I tried to draw line."

It is pretty plain to me. I was your dream guy, and you were the picture I would draw if someone asked me what my perfect woman would be.

god, this song is fucking amazing. i can literally hear the pain in his voice. it's ironic how beautiful it is in relation to how sad it is. & GoDeeper...that's the best meaning of that lyric i've seen yet. nice.

I think this is one of the best songs on Continuum.
Although i like everything John Mayer does, this cd was not my favorite. I dont like the new sound. I'm more of a Room For Squares kinda girl.
But this song is amazing. the acoustic version is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

First heard this song today, cried like hell.
Maybe 'cause it simply makes too much sense to me. Painful sense.

A guy who broke my heart introduced this song to me. Like, a message he was trying to convey I suppose.

"This is the deep and dying breath of
This love we've been working on"
It simply rings a bell. Like he's telling me that this loving will end, no matter how much I struggle and hold on to this dying breath.

I thought the song was damn harsh. That's why I cried instantly. "Go cry about it, why don't you" Yeah, I'm crying already.

The relationship is doomed and so I have to slap myself and tell myself to move on.

Thanks, John Mayer.

I think this song is about an epic romance between two people, & hanging onto the last moments before the end of it.
"This is the deep and dying breath of
This love we've been working on"
^ this shows that its the end of something they've put a lot of effort into.
"slow dancing in a burning room" makes me picture 2 people accepting the end of their love for each other.
its such a tragic song.

Slow Dancing in A Burning Room makes me imagine two people trying to keep their romance together, while its falling apart no matter what they do. The song is like a sinking ship, but you're still throwing water out even though the ships halfways under.

perhaps i'm just too recently relationship jaded...but why is this a break-up song? yeah the context, "go on and cry about it" implies one person telling the other to take off...but i don't see them leaving each other...has no one ever slow danced? yes, they've doomed themselves in the relationship...but at the moment, they're too involved with each other...i just picture the two of them with closed eyes...her head against his chest...and together they have to say goodbye, at least to love...but won't

I have to say that this is one of the most moving songs I have ever heard, especially because it pertains to my relationship right now.

It's not a silly little moment
It's not the storm before the calm
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love we've been working on

I've accepted that is over but I'm still slow-dancing in a burning room, I haven't ended it. This song is making it not hurt as much.My soon to be ex has seen it and has come to accept reality.

Thank you John Mayer for writing such beautiful songs

This is just a beautiful song. I'm sure it helped many folks get through their break-up. To me the line "you were the one I tried to draw", refers to she being the perfect girl that he had always been hoping and praying for. An earlier comment about 'draw' being the Ace of Spade did make sense too, because in cards the ace of spade is the most powerful card and everyone wants to draw that card. And yes like so many other, this song also relates to me in so many ways. It is such an honest song, describing the need for two people to move on after their continually failed relationship. Best song on Continuum.

the title "slow dancing in a burning room" reminds me of the novel survivor by chuck palahniuk where the ship is on fire and the guy and girl are dancing as it sinks.

just throwing that out there.

go cry about it why don't you? that's the meanest thing i've ever heard. everytime i hear it it actually makes me what to cry. makes me feel really guilty. i feel like a child being scolded, or rather a grown woman being scolded by the man she loves. i'm trying to apologize and explain myself. i'm trying to make things right and he just doesn't want to hear anymore excuses. i start to tear up and he says "go cry about it why don't you." the tears just don't mean much anymore because we've done this over and over again. i hate you john mayer. that is the meanest line ever!

lizabeth - Yeah, I guess it is pretty harsh. That said, I know that I've felt that way before.

Everyone has felt it "That's it, the last straw. I'm not putting up with this anymore. This has happened too many times. I'm over excuses, and we're way past solutions. You hurt me, but this time you can't talk your way out of it. We both know it's time to get out while we're still sane. This is the way I feel and, unfortunately for you, you're not required to like it.

You can only get stepped on so many times before you start to resent the person with the boots, no matter what was felt at the start.

For me, I hear all this in the song. Like alot of Mayer's songs, there's so much room for applicability. Almost everyone should be able to relate to one or more of his songs. Fantastic!

this is one of my favorite john mayer songs. to me this song is about being in this what once was an amazing relationship and now its slowly going down to nothing. both people still love each other so much but just cant seem to get it right anymore. both know that the relationship is eventually going to end but both keep prolonging it for hopes that maybe it will be better but both really know that its not. perhaps one person is trying harder than the other to keep this relationship together " Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms"
relationships are extremely hard and ending them can be just about the hardest, this song explains this very well. i hope i made same sense and didnt confuse anybody.
