Lyrics for Slow Dancing In A Burning Room as interpreted by InfraRecon

Slow Dancing In A Burning Room Lyrics
It's not a silly little moment
It's not the storm before the calm
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love we've been working on

Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms
Nobody's gonna come and save you
We pulled too many false alarms

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw

I'll make the most of all the sadness
You'll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Go cry about it, why don't you?
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Don't you think we oughta know by now?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?

This seriously is the best breakup song ever.

I haven't heard all of the songs on the Album, but I know I like it more than the 4 that I have heard. It's deep and it's great.

MY favorite part of the song is, "How dare you say it's nothing to me. Baby, you're the only light I ever saw." Killed me too, itsokaytobehappy.

Everyone's talking about
"I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw"

But I don't understand the significance. Can anyone explain it to me??
Thanks

gosh..this song is simply amazing!! beginning of the school year...whoa, i had a break up that wasn't bad at first, but of course i don't speak to the guy anymore. (JERK!) ...but seriously songs like this are so calming!! the words to these songs are brilliant and so deep.

I have a question about this statement:

"I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw"

What context is the word "draw" used as? Initially I got the imagery of him sitting alone at a desk, thinking of her, and drawing her picture, but after reading it I got a different context of the word usage. Maybe I'm a gambling addict, but the way the sentence is being used "You were the one I tried to draw" I get the comparison of the girl as maybe the Ace of Spades, or the card that he wants to "draw" at the time...i dont know just a thought

this song is the best song john mayer has every produced. so much meaning yet so simple as well. the lyrics describe a fall out in a relationship, something they should have realized before it was too late but they never got around to it. i think this song was about jennifer love hewitt. i remember when they were going out and he wrote your body is a wonderland for her....maybe their break up was a little more harsh than any of us thought. this cd was filled with alot of depressing break up songs and just depressing songs period.
but this cd is still the best in the world. props to john mayer for being the amazing artist he is.

Its obvious that this is a song about a break-up, but its the way in which he describes it which it so beautiful.

"My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room"

The words "we're slow dancing" are symblic of the moments of pleasure that they have experience during their relationship and that they dont really want it to end, even though they know its enevitable. While the words "in a burning room" are symbolic of their relationship, or rather the burning room is their relationship, and as it continues to burn its flames will devour them both and eventually burn out to nothing.

It is a truly beautiful and passionate song, that depicts the tender moments of a relationship "I was the one you always dreamed of, You were the one I tried to draw" as well has the heart ache and harsh reality of break up "Don't you think we oughta know by now? Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?"

I agree. One of the best songs on his new album. He always seems to throw out some pretty intense stuff, though. Never ceases to amaze me...

Strangely enough, my boyfriend bought this CD for me for Christmas. Well, exboyfriend now. I thought it was somewhat ironic, though.

But, in any case. it's an amazig song with some great underlying meanings and metaphors. Absolutely incredible. And I can relate, which makes it all the more astounding.

My first post I am surprised that I have not seen more insightful(correct) interpretations of this song perhaps, this is due to the question asked "What does this song mean to you?".. No matter I will try to my best ability to give the best interpretation this song. Verse by verse format at time detouring from the from the format to correctly analyzied the most significant phrases.

This love we've been working on

Can't seem to hold you like I want to

We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Such a beautiful illustration.. done by John Mayer..kudos to John or whatever ghost writer penned this song... This verse of the song sets the tone of a break up..the beginning, to be more specific. "It is not the storm before the calm this is the deep in dying breath of this love that we've been working on.".. couldn’t be put better...this is simple saying things will not get better. and this fight or discourse is the precursor to ultimately end.

.................................................

Because you can't understand
...................................................................

A flashback of the relationship when things began..."I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw." .. If analytical reasoning used you see this is compare contrast line... she wanted him (dreamed of) she was the one he tried to change (draw).. Using this…. it correctly predicts his desire or perhaps acceptance of the ending and her refusal and/or her confusion in that appears in the remainder of the song. And as we all know the individual with the most emotional connection in a relationship is the one most reluctant to understand that things are over. "How dare you say it's nothing to me?
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw"... this is very well put. “ I make the most of all sadness”.. most of us when ending a relationship show and express signs of remorse accompanied with apologetic undertones. And those of us who are being separated or “dumped” most of the times are enraged or as the writer put it “bicthy”.” You'll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty”

.. In the ending speaks of itself…

this song really makes me think of that thing i read or heard somewhere:
if you drop a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump right out
but if you put a frog into a pot of cool water, and slowly turn up the heat, it will just sit there and boil to death.

this song really sounds like a relationship based on that. if you had have been dropped into this relationship how it is now, you would have instantly jumped out. but since it has been a slow build, you're just sitting there boiling

This song is definitely about breaking-up.
Right away he's talking about how its ending when he says

this is the deep and dyin breath, of this love that we've been working on.

He's writing about a relationship that they can't seem to make work. They break up, get back together, break up, get back together. The cycle just never stops. Because he knows that eventually its just gonna end again. When he says they're slow dancing in a burning room. Because if they're just standing there in a burning room eventually they'll die. I.e. the relationship.

I Love and hate this song at the same time, its wierd I know. It is the apitamy of what I am going through right now and I can't stand it. Love gives birth to hate in a strage and frightning way. I love her with all my heart and know that it will only end in pain an heart ache. This is why this song means so much to me and I will hold on to every moment we spend together because,

"We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room."

I LOVE THIS SONG!
It's really meaningful to me. I think it's great.
I think this song means that John's trying to love her... but she keeps slipping away because she can't love him. She's just grown out of her skin and all he wants to do is love her.
And their relationship is beginning to end.
I'm not sure lol.
Not too good with all this.

(For me) it is about giving up, finally just hitting that realization that my relationship that we had tried so hard to save was not going to work. I wanted to hold her like I did when we first fell in love, but I couldn't bc I didn't know if I was in love with her anymore--I was lost and confused in my emotions. I couldn't get past my issues to hold her like I wanted to--I wouldn't let myself. We had done this too many times and it had to end sometime. She knew it, too, but she wouldn't give up.

She loved me so much and thought it wasn't reciprocated... But she really was the one I loved so I kept dancing.

"You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw",
She acted like I didn't care. I wanted to love her forever and I don't know where we went wrong. She was my life.

"I'll make the most of all the sadness", I took the hurt and the experience with me and am trying to grow from it while she bitches at me for not trying to work it out... again. She was still wanting to dance and I was tired of dancing. I saw that we were doomed. I was mad at her bc she didn't see it and she tried to put the blame on me for giving up. I was mad at her for not seeing it and told her to go cry about it and that it wouldn't change anything. We should have known by that point it wasn't going to work.

This was the reality check that I needed to end my relationship that seemed doomed.

I love the verse,

"I was the one you always dreamed of. You were the one I tried to draw. How dare you say it's nothing to me. Baby, you're the only light I ever saw."

I love it so much because of what it means. They always dreamed of each other, and about finding "the one". Now that they've found each other, they know their differences. She says their relationship was nothing to him, but he can't believe she said that, because she was the "only light he ever saw". To him, she was the most important thing in his life.

Heh, kinda sad it had to end this way...

I'm basiclly going through this song right now and it sucks a lot.

I see it as a relationship that has been going on for a while now and it just seems like they are on their last leg of it. They've "pulled to many false alarms" which I take as they have broken up and got back together numerous times and this last time is finally it for both of them.

When he says, "How dare you say it's nothing to me, baby you're the only light I ever saw." I see that as an argument after they have broken up and she says something like, "Maybe you never really cared." His response is, you were the only girl I ever saw and wanted to be with.

The part that is, "Don't you think we ought to know by now, don't you think we would have learned somehow?" That hits me really hard. With me and my ex-girlfriend, we broke up so many times and got back together and you would think that we would have learned that it just wasn't working. But we kept at it and we were 'Slow dancing in a burning room."

This song is absoltuley amazing and just explains everything I am going through. It's good to find these songs where the artist can express your thoughts better than you can.
