Lyrics for Slow Dancing In A Burning Room as interpreted by InfraRecon

Slow Dancing In A Burning Room Lyrics
It's not a silly little moment
It's not the storm before the calm
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love we've been working on

Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms
Nobody's gonna come and save you
We pulled too many false alarms

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw

I'll make the most of all the sadness
You'll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Go cry about it, why don't you?
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Don't you think we oughta know by now?
Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?

I am playing this song over and over because it's beautiful and relates exactly to what I am going through.
My boyfriend and I broke up last night. We couldn't make it work out, although it was the greatest love I have ever known. Sometimes love is not enough.
John Mayer portrays this. How you can "slow dance" meaning linger in a "burning" relationship because you wish the person was the "one" but they aren't. It's bittersweet. A taste of love that is so true it hurts when you have to leave it.

I think he's trying to get it through her head that he really does love her, and he pours is heart out and tells her what he's really feeling for her, but she wont budge. and as the song goes on he's slowly resenting her and getting angry at the fact she wont give this a try again.

I don't even know how to explain what I feel about this song. By far, the best from Continuum, if not his best song above all. I can't get enough of it, it's incredibly beautiful and it definitely describes well how a relationship comes to its end.. or at least the last parts of it. It amazes me

if anyone needs a song to relate to/help them move on, this is the song. i've recently been in a similar situation, and I just can't stop playing this song.

somehow the song combines the beauty and pain of a relationship. its obvious as to what this song is about; a doomed relationship, the moment in time where both people realize that love is just not enough, the relationship is falling no matter how much they try and save it. they're just slow dancing in a burning room; trying to save the beauty in the relationship, despite their surroundings, and despite the fact that it really is over.

john mayer is amazing.

i remember being in a relationship like this. It still romantic at times which is the slow dancing but the relationship as a whole is burning down.
The lyrics of this song really symbolize the cycle of this type of relationship. Your sweet one moment then the next your saying "go cry about it why don't you?"

I think this part is about her blaming him and attacking him because she doesnt know how to deal with the end of the relationship.

Simply put - this song is about a relationship slowly coming to an end. Both people in the relationship know the relationship is ending but they still cant let go of each other even though they know things are coming to an end. The "slow dancing in a burning room" is symbolic of how both people in the relationship know they need to get out of their relationship but are waiting as long as possible to do that because its hard for them to leave each other so they keep coming back to each other again and again. They both know the relationship isnt working but still havnet learned "Don't you think we oughta know by now? Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?"
From personal experience people can love each other and things can just not be working in a relationship causing it to end. This is one of the best break up songs ever. It shows how truly amazing and genius John's song writing is.

The lyrics to this song are just amazing. They're particularly relevant to my current relationship, which makes them even more beautiful to me. The metaphor of 'slow dancing in a burning room' is just so perfect. The idea of a couple who deeply love eachother, but know that eventually, due to differing life paths, mixed emotions and different wants and needs in life (the burning room), they will eventually have to say goodbye. A slow dance being a perfect end to what they had, before their love gets engulfed by the reality of life. And maybe they blame eachother for this, but right now, they just have to savour what they have as who knows how much longer they'll have it? I just hope that in my case the fire subsides, or that is stays away from us a little bit longer.

When I listen to this song..I feel like I'm suffocating.
It describes my relationship with my ex/best friend so well.

But I can look at it two ways. One way I think of it as her singing to me...And then I can think about it reversed.

"Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms"
She never liked to be touched...So I could never hold her like I wanted to.

"I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw"-- We both used to dream about each other. She also used to draw these characters that were representative of us...But said she could never draw my character the way she imagined.

"How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw"-- I would be the one to tell her that I meant nothing to her. And she would say something like this. When love dissolves, people get hurt. And it can feel like there was never anything there to begin with.

"I'll make the most of all the sadness
You'll be a bitch because you can"-- I'll try to carry on, and make the most of whatever I can...But she'll continue to be a bitch. Never fall in love with your best friend.

"You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand"-- this would be me. I'll then try to hurt her because I just can't understand why or how she could stop loving me. Although, it was obvious it wasn't going to work because we had so many problems. But we kept coming back to each other because we wanted to feel the way we used to. We never want to admit that it's ending...So when we're slow dancing, we don't realize that everything around us is burning.

"Don't you think we shoulda learned somehow?"

I think the song is actually about two people who love each other deeply and want to be together, but for one reason or another can't be because the circumstances of their lives won't allow it. They are enjoying their time together as much as possible, and are savoring their love while it lasts, but they know that the obstacles their relationship must face will make it impossible for things to last forever, which makes the situation that much more tragic.

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this song, TheIrishMick317. This song is completely heart wrenching and bittersweet and no one likes to admit it but it is. it sucks, but i have to agree with you in some ways. In my opinion in order to understand his possible intentions of the songs meaning one has to look at the lyrics realistically and literally since thats all we're given for interpretation.

So, okay, he's basically saying that he doesn't want to let her go but he also he can't settle himself upon this girl forever and that she's taking it kinda hard and being selfish and stubborn. Well, I wonder if its her thats stubborn? Was she in her own self-absorbent world? What about him? The song has a sexy, smooth and sad feel, but thats what makes the twist in the whole song. I mean just read the lyrics and don't tell me that you don't think he's being a little conceded.

"I was the one you always dreamed of >>> i'm the man of your dreams.
You were the one I tried to draw >>> he tried to draw he...tried to create her...playing God eh?
How dare you say it's nothing to me >>> it's nothing as in she's nothing to him
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw," >>> she is the light...light makes things clear...but he can't see them together in the future...now he's just contradicting himself and playing mind games.

"I'll make the most of all the sadness >>> sad because his ego's hurt
You'll be a bitch because you can >>> she'll be a bitch because he completely broke her heart
You try to hit me just to hurt me >>> a slap so he'd actually feel something for once
So you leave me feeling dirty >>> again the table being turned
Because you can't understand," >>> she can't understand as in she's dumb or something...maybe she just had complete faith in him and then he goes and tells her that he's not really that into her. He sounds confusing and confused.

Alright so, she may be all that he says that she is but I think hes also a lot like her in this sense. It's not just her its him refusing to understand her take on the conflict as to why the relationship was doomed. why? i don't know. we'll never know, but she's certainly not the only one in the relationship to be accusatory toward. They're both in the relationship together, but unfortunately neither of them wants to compromise or work it out. Ah shit, so it doesn't work out. Damn too bad right.

Girl, you've been played. John Mayer, your such a jerk and kind of a pussy. but aren't we all sometimes?

STILL, makes for a great song.

I just want to acknowledge that there are many well thought out posts that have plenty of intriguing insight towards what John Mayer has to convey to his audience in "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room." I want to start out by pointing out that I am by no means a driving force in the display of intelligence in his song writing but I feel as if I have a few things to clarify about this song and his true intentions from which I've picked up over the past years by watching and listening to plenty of interviews concerning the song. With that said, here is my interpretation:

First, as everyone has previously mentioned, it is clear that the first two phrases suggest a relationship he has had in the past, most likely from personal experience due to the very emotional nature of the lyrics, and that this song is dedicated to the woman that had refused his mutual understanding of the inevitable break-up. What is interesting is the chorus in which he introduces the position in which he takes throughout entire the song and the position he suggests his ex-girlfriend takes. One note I'd like to point out is that they do not mutually agree about the inevitable ending of their relationship. With that said, take a look at the fourth and fifth stanza just after the third which is the chorus:

"I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw,"

I know it may seem as if the break up is mutual but with the subtleties in the lyrics you notice that he's pointing out that his ex (at that point) is clearly self absorbed in her own world and feels as if the failing relationship that they are experiencing is being blamed on John or the so called fictional character which portrays the man in the relationship. As John continues, we note the subtle separation in thought between the man and woman when he says, "How dare you say it's nothing to me, Baby you're the only light I ever saw." This meaning that he's trying to explain to her how their relationship has taken it's toll in terms of getting back together and breaking up and her attempts at blaming the reasoning on John is biased in that she refuses to admit any fault. In the next phrase we see the point I made earlier come to life:

"I'll make the most of all the sadness
You'll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand,"

In this phrase, John is saying that no matter what he says or what they try to do, the relationship is inevitably doomed, she still refuses to admit any fault and remains self-absorbed in her own world while he pours his heart out simply saying, "I refuse to fight it because the idea of who is right or wrong doesn't mean a thing to him, it's the fact that she continuously refuses to acknowledge that by slow dancing in a burning room, no matter what happens, the relationship is falling apart around them. Slow dancing in a burning room insinuates that while slow dancing you’re focused on one person, one entity as a whole, and she can't acknowledge their faults as a whole. Remember, a relationship requires a mutual attraction and interaction. John is noting the miscommunication occurring and by pouring his heart out, he's hoping she'll have no choice but to acknowledge this fact in order to ease his pain. The point he tries to convey is that they should agree and notice that no matter what happens they are destined to not be together. What asserts this point is the last two lines of the fifth phrase, "You leave me feeling dirty, Because you can't understand."

After the last chorus, he notes that she may see that they're going down but continuously refuses to admit it as previously noted.

Finally, the final few phrases, "Go cry about it why don't you," is a play on the fact that he's finally become fed up with the situation at hand and feels that if she's going to be that stubborn about not admitting their inevitable disenchantment that he needs to have a subtle ending to the relationship, a bit of closure to say. He's trying to convey this fact in that, "You refused to acknowledge this fact therefore if you continue to take a stance against me when I asked you not to, simply asking you to note the fact that we're slow dancing in a burning room, inevitably succumbing to the impending death of our relationship, then you don't deserve any closure in knowing you hurt me much more than you would have ever imagined in the line, ‘go cry about why don’t you.'"

Incredible lyricist and song writer. I felt it necessary to give my take on the meaning of the song considering I felt as if it spoke to me. I have no problem reading future criticism whether it be good or bad but I feel we should all take note and continue to wonder until he explicitly explains each and every word about its meaning.

Thanks again for taking the time to read my take.

i guess it's like common sense what this song is about...like if you don't know that it's about a guy and a girls relationship ending your just retarded...that being said..i feel like i can relate to this song...i was in a relationship and we always fought...like every single day we would have something new and pointless to fight about...we loved each other (atleast i think we did but who really knows how she felt?) but we both new that our relationship wasn't going to work out unless something changed...this song is about that relationship that can't change...2 ppl trying to figure things out but yet in the end are just from 2 different worlds...and the song is about knowing that they are going down and just kinda giving up...slow dancing in a burning room...it's like they have thrown the white flag and have given up on love...pretty sad song but john mayers a boss just gonna throw that out there....yeeeeup

when I picture 2 people slow dancing in a burning room I imagine that these 2 people see that the room they're in is on fire, they know they're dying, but they choose to ignore the fact and just carry on as normal..or maybe even just enjoy their last moments together
So I think this song's about a relationship where both people know it's dying and it's about to end, but they've been ignoring the fact and pretending everything's fine.

unfortunatly this song fits too well for comfort to my relationship. i have a girl who i've been with for ages and i know shes going to want it too end. we've had fights and thought we worked them out and that we'd be ok but we know it probaly isnt going to be. none of us want it too stop but everyday that passes, we get closer to the end.

When I hear this song, I think about a young newly-wed couple. They got married, when everyone told them that they were too young (especially the family), and that they didn't even know what love was. About say 3 to 6 months into the marriage, they realized that everyone was right. Well the guy did. But he decided not to tell her how he felt, and stick it out. About a year into it, they were always fighting, but they somehow still love each other. I feel like this is a song from the guys point of view.He didn't want to hurt her, but he wants out, and the girl doesn't understand.

Ok, so I am coming into this very late... I just recently heard this song for the first time and interpreted it to be a story about a couple on the edge of being unfaithful, knowing it was useless to try to avoid the inevidable. They are going down the cheating path and the hurt that will come from the aftermath is the angst in the song....this couple in my head has been skirting around the issue for some time now and slowly the embers have been building. I never for a moment thought of it as a break-up song. Kind of crazy now that I hear it in that light. Did anyone else hear the infildelity version? I think it's incredibly sexier as a cheating song.

It's just like one of the saddest and most honest songs ever...just life...So probably they've been together but they were always fighting and they just couldn't get over some issues and now they are once more back together. And they just know that it's going to end up the way it always is for them...he knows they will be hurting each other...or,at least, that she will try to hurt him:
"You'll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
Because you can't understand"

and I guess that's her way to protect herself, you know, to hurt him instead of being hurt and that's because she can't understand, can't trust him that he loves her...but I don't think that he tries to tell her that it's other...or maybe he does but it's not like he want it to end it. I think they both realize that it's going to end soon as they are dancing in this burning room...but I don't think they will try to get out of it...they will just dance slowly, seizing every moment of being together, staying inside until the fire burns the room down...

this song never gets old. before continuum, john mayer didn't even come close to wording his songs like this one. he's really found his niche, thankfully. its amazing how he can describe things with his guitar. just listen to the solo at the end of the version he played in LA. its perfect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32GZ3suxRn4

This is on my top 10 on the sad love song list. This song is SO pure, unique, and lovingly bitter. Obviously, Mayer and the female have two different takes on the situation. Neither wanted to break up--but he's letting go. It sounds like they believed they were in love, but Mayer indirectly cries out, "I can't take anymore--how many times can we do this..it's unhealthy..we're over I'm sorry". This song is SO vivid, so heartwrenching, and UNDERappreciated! This is what souls are made of after the ending of relationships. His ending lines just make me want to weep unendingly...He's a legend.

It's about two people who keep breaking up and getting back together who KNOW that this relationship is not working. It's two people who just can't let go even though logically they know it won't last. I always get the sense at the end of the song, "don't you think we oughta know by now?" that even as the music ends they're giving it another go.
