  My Interpretation:Based off the actual lyrics it definitely sounds as if it is a looking back on some type of relationship that drastically changed given the past tense in "All the things you said about us" part. And yes it is referring to how nothing has truly changed since he can, "still sing this song... So simply about you". When trying to explain his lack of emotional change in singing the song it does sound like it surprises even him, "Because after all... It is just one of those things".
  
  Now the obvious candidate for a relationship that has changed drastically but not really in this song would be a breakup, since anyone who has truly gone through a meaningful one can kind of connect with that sullen amazing feeling of still being reminded of that person when it comes to certain things. However it is definitely not limited to that interpretation. Another could potentially be death, especially given the slow and morose tone of the music but still somewhat amazing reminder of what that relationship left in the singer. If I were to guess it would probably be about a breakup however when I heard the song at first, without really listening to the lyrics I was for some reason reminded of saying goodbye to someone close that died. Usually those first interpretations tend to be illuminating.

  General Comment:i always thought that this song was more about heart-break; and just never being able to get over someone, that's why it's amazing that even throughout all the pain endured because of a break-up- you still love that person just as much. bittersweet.
