The soup
Was hot and split pea and on the stove
And Michael and Marry and Bugsy and Buster were occupied
The pictures had clear resolution in their minds
And the plan was fool-proof but there was so much to do

First they'd decide who'd drive the car
Who'd wear the masks and who'd bribe the cops
Then they'd decide what were the rules
When do you shoot and when do you pull back?

They'd synchronize their watches
And their heartbeats in their rib-cages
This can't be a mess, this can't be a mess

Nobody knows how it comes to be
That they think that they must and they do what they can
But the cops are right there and the sirens, they blare
And the by-starers stare and everyone just stands

Bugsy went down first, then Marry
Then Michael drove off and Buster just ran
He was running like a child running in a game of tag
Until he was hit, until he was it...

General Comment:i agree with theporcupinesharp. this is about the holocaust. except the ones actually robbing are the nazis. and the jews want to run away from them and they are the ones who get shot. how sad. but it could also be that some poor jews were sick of just soup, and the death camps, and they tried to run away and got shot. i have many more explanations that only add to the ones that have already been said but you guys are such detectives:)

General Comment:In my opinion,I think that they are poor. All they have to eat is soup and they're getting sick of it and strive for a better life so much that they rob a bank.
    I'm not quite sure,of course,but that's what I loosely gather.

General Comment:i think of the soup as a symbol of their impending doom. it's boiling and bubbling on the stove and getting hotter by the minute, unnoticed while the group makes plans to do something that will ultimately lead to their demise - foreshadowing.

General Comment:i got another epiphany!!!! you know how regina likes using historical allusions and references? well maybe the soup was like the boiling pot or different races in america
and they were shot because of they race and discrimination
or how people sterotype themselves..tired of eating soup because theyre poor and robbed a bank for money
and il follow up with my last post by saying that they remember of happier times..or they innocence is broken easily for survival, food, and equality for race..or age difference?

General Comment:imagine the oddity of it all if u will. the soup.

these friends get to gether to eat soup and decide to rop a bank. and in the end, all but one dies.

its just a story, and a funny one because she uses things akin to child hood.

    soup.
And Michael and Marry and Bugsy and Buster
    tag

bugsy reminds me of bugs bunny
buster was a character in a cartoon way back when
michaela nd marry are everyday names

it seems she is just telling a story about kids making grown up decisions and not realizing the consequences until it is too late.

General Comment:I know for a fact this is about Bugsy Siegel. The second I heard that name, I knew. He was a famous gangster in New York and California. This song is about a heist him, Mickey Cohen (a well known Jewish gang boss), and from what I can find online, one of his 4 mistresses Mary were planning. (I couldn't find a Buster, though I'm pretty sure it was a popular nickname of the time)
    Amazing song.
