The lions roar
And young men soar
The flames all scorch
The circus floor

Puppets on strings
All dance and sing
And flap their wings
Trumpets play sick lullabies

Delicate dame
Her fragile face
Was scared away
Without a trace

Out in the cold
Where did she go?
Into unknown
A place I'll never know

And the desperate search began
All across this sea and land
I just knew I'd find you here
I just knew I found you

Elephant's rear
And young men steer
The audience
Just claps and cheers

I asked around
Half-empty towns
About a girl
Nowhere to be found

And the desperate search began
All across this sea and land
I just knew I'd find you here
I just knew I found you

We didn't know
We could not go
The circus songs
Just carried on

Out of the crowd
Three men rush out
And scream and shout
"Everybody stop!"

it's about a carnival, and then a girl goes missing, so the guy leaves the carnival to look for her, but then they go back to the carnival. Then some guys came in and ruined their fun at the carnival. =(

The Man is busy looking through The Town, as it celebrates a large carnival, for The Woman. He finds her at the carnival, like he predicted he would. But before they can meet, three men come out of the crowd. This is the part where the song has some vicious sounding instrumental, without any more lyrics. I see these three start destroying everything around in a violent mess, and the ruined Town afterward in the calm part of the instrumental.

My imaginantion's way too vivid, hah.

Ok I always thought it was about a girl who ran away and joined the circus and then the singer is going to go find her. He is about to find her but then the circus catches on fire and she disappears again. I dont know, thats just my idea.

maybe my mind is too polluted by pop culture, but i immediately had the movie "Big Fish" come to mind when i first heard this song. it may just be me though, i'm not too sure. i just remember from the movie the one scene where time stopped and it was at a carnival and Ewan McGregor's character saw the girl whom he loved. it was a fabulously artistic scene, hence why is it has stuck with me. i just wonder if anyone else thought of that when they heard this song.

I think this is one of the 'we intertwined' narrator's dreams - his searching each of his dreams for the girl thats left him. Maybe when they were together in life she enjoyed the circus, so it is natural for him to look for her there in his dreams.

i agree with Jacdale8 but i also think this:

she ran away/he tried to find her/whatever that bit, and he finds her in part of the circus.

The audience is wathcing and enjoying the show but really, there is so much drama unfolding and they have to keep the act up, even though 'he' has found 'her' and she obv didnt wnat to be found. "We didn't know We could not go The circus songs Just carried on"

although they have recognition, using some good old queen lyrics "the show must go on"

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
