So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I don't want to hear about it anymore
It's a shame I've got to live without you anymore
There's a fire in my heart
A pounding in my brain
It's driving me crazy
We don't need to talk about it anymore
Yesterday's just a memory
Can we close the door?
I just made one mistake
I didn't know what to say
When you called me "baby"
Don't say goodnight
Say you're gonna stay forever
Oh-whoa, all the way
Can you take me high enough
To fly me over (fly me over)
Yesterday?
Can you take me high enough?
It's never over
And yesterday is just a memory
Yesterday is just a memory
And I don't want to live without you anymore
Can't you see I'm in misery?
And you know for sure
I would live and die for you
And I'd know just what to do
When you call me "baby"
Don't say goodbye
Say you're gonna stay forever
Oh-whoa, all the way
Can you take me high enough
Can you fly me over (fly me over)
Yesterday?
Can you take me high enough
It's never over
And yesterday is just a memory, I'm running
(Oh-woah)
I was running for the door
(Oh-woah)
The next thing I remember
(Oh-woah)
I was running back for more
(Oh-woah)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Don't say goodbye
Say you're gonna stay forever
Oh-whoa, all the way (all the way)
(All the way, yeah)
Can you take me high enough
Can you fly me over (fly me over)
Yesterday?
Can you take me high enough?
It's never over
Whoa-oh, Whoa-oh, Whoa-oh, Whoa-oh
Can you take me high enough
Won't you fly me over (won't you fly me over)

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

He certainly did earn that reputation.
In my opinion, this song is about someone that doesn't know how good he or she has it, and they know that settling down really scares them. Hell, I have been there myself. I was in a romance with a really great girl, and when she and I started getting more serious...I really got scared, and I basically jumped ship, and broke up with her...but she and I remained friends, and now we are dating again, and its great now.
This is not commentary on the song or on you; rather something you said. What the heck does "settling down really scares them" mean? Has anyone ever been married 'cause it doesn't appear that way on this site. Except for foresaking others, "settling down" doesn't mean people have to change. I was married a decade and we allowed each other the space we each needed. We had some mutual friends, but we each had our own friends. When he wanted to go out golfing or to a club with his friends, he went (with my blessing). When I wanted to spend time alone or go out with a girlfriend to eat, he supported it. People shouldn't (and often don't) lose their identitywhen they marry (ie settle down). The other person merely complements them...makes life more exciting at times, gives them a lifelong companion through the good and bad times, supports them emotionally and pushes them to better themselves, etc. I'm sorry, but the sentiment on this site regarding "setting down" is often so negative...and without reason. It takes two people to keep a relationship exciting, and both must be dedicated to keeping it that way. The only thing I see different about being single is being ok to screw around. And for some of us, that gets awfully old, boring, stale, and way too easy to be really exciting. I'm also old school, 'cause (to me) when women become dogs like men with regard to sex, they behave disgustinly, and I'd be worried about the diseases I would bring home. I can't imagine having so little respect for my body (as a woman) that I would want just anyone to touch it. Ick.
@CKF929 Best of luck to you and your lady!
