Far away
The ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

The starlight
I will be chasing a starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms

My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive

Now I'll never let you go
If you promised not to fade away
Never fade away

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms

Far away
The ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

And I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms
I just wanted to hold

My Interpretation:I believe this song is about his faith, hope, and his passion for life in an unknown universe. I think the song is homage, to the infinite possibility the universe holds for him. He also would like to share this revelation with the rest of those whom he loves, or those whom have given up on life. The verse below supports my theory

    Verse: My life
    You electrify my life
    Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive

The following verse describes how life is mutable, it can shed light and darkness, but ultimately love is what matters to the song writer, sharing that love and connecting with someone, a simple desire/need, but a challenge to hold on ascertain.

    Verse: Our hopes and expectations
    Black holes and revelations
    Our hopes and expectations
    Black holes and revelations

    Great song, I love it!

My Interpretation:I always thought it was about the band?

The ship is the band travelling around the world, and those who remembered them in the beginning (family etc) remember who they were, not really who they are becoming, so their fondest memories of the band members are becoming distant memories... sort of because they're never home anymore, and they are growing seperate from those closest to them who care about them the most.

The starlight is their dream of making it big and their music heard, but because they're becoming so distant from their loved ones (or their original fans no longer enjoy their direction) they're not sure if it's really worth it?

They just want to reach their fullest potential or their dream

    "My life
    You electrify my life
    Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive "

So the band is singing about how it feels following their dreams and their desires to allow others to be apart of it.

"Now I'll never let you go
If you promised not to fade away
    Never fade away "

So the band is singing that they will never ever let this dream go so long as the desire and inspiration still exists, so like as long as people still feel their messages and love them.

    Our hopes and expectations
    Black holes and revelations

So I think this is talking about trial and error, like what they hoped for and expected to happen are either black holes (they sucked or were so far from what they expected) or revealed new ways for them to continue following the dream...
i dunno.. that's my take anyway

General Comment:To me, this song says alot of things but I will focus on this one part for now. The first few lines say "Far away The ship is taking me far away Far away from the memories Of the people who care if I live or die". I believe that this means he is forgetting about everything that has happened in that past and will just live for the moment. In the second part of those lyrics when it says "from the memories of the people who care if I live or die" this seems to me like he has messed up in the past and he knows it. But he also knows that there are people out there that will get on him for everything. Like the people who try to bring you down or pick on you. He has been there before and knows how to distinguish that from real istakes. He doesn't let the small things get to him. That sounds like a real man to me. But not just a man, that sounds like a REAL person. Just think if everyone lived that way, just brushing off those little bumps in the road and getting back up when you fall and carrying on. Pretty soon those "bullies" I guess you can call them will just stop. In my experience through life, its evident that people go for the weak ones, like survival of the fittest. If you are strong, you won't let things get to you. And I believe that is the real message behind these lyrics in Muse's "Starlight".

General Comment:i think the songs about unrequited life,he has been pursuing her/him for a long time but realises it just leads to a 'blackhole', the 'starlight' is his dream of them being together but he realises this isnt going to happen and all it leads to is his misery 'i dont know if its worth it anymore'.

Memory:I just wanted to share a recent experience with this song, and what it means to me. My fiancee died Easter 2011, and the past year was really horrible for me. Lately, though I've been doing a bit better, I've been afraid to move on with my life, because I don't want to leave behind our connection and everything we had together.

Last weekend, a friend of ours had a dream in which she was having a party. All our friends were there, except me, because I was depressed and didn't feel like being around people. At one point, she noticed someone in her computer room, and when she went in, it was my boyfriend. He sat her down in front of the computer, and asked her to tell me something for him. He started playing a video of this song, with the lyrics. At one point, he pointed to the screen and said "This is very important". As he touched the screen, the words began to glow. The line was "I'll never let you go, if you promise not to fade away. Never fade away."

This experience has helped me so incredibly much, and the song has so many levels of meaning for me. I know he was telling me how much he always loved me, and still does, and that he'll always be with me, that in moving forward I won't lose him. I also feel like, in the part that says "Let's conspire to alight all the souls that would die just to feel alive" he was telling me that I make a difference in the world, just by being who I am, and that I still have a reason for being here, even though he's not. He doesn't want me to stop being myself, because of feeling sad without him. He always said he loved my passion for life and my charisma, I know he wouldn't want me to go through life all dulled down and depressed.

I'd heard this song before, but never paid much attention to the lyrics. To me, this is what the lyrics mean. It's talking about someone who's dying, but he wants his girlfriend to know that she was what was really important to him in this life, and that he'll always be there, loving her, and that she should go on shining her own unique light in the world, just like always, because maybe she could make a difference in someone else's life. "Black holes and revelations" describe to me what someone goes through when they lose the person they love, and all the "hopes and expectations" they had together are gone. But it's a message of hope, more than loss. It's the missing piece that helps me go forward now, and is a song that reminds me of him without making me feel sad, like all the others do.

My Interpretation:My personal interpretation, which though very contrived in order to fit my personal experience (what I wanted to hear) I think works quite well. Such is the beauty of abstract lyrics. Maybe someone has had a similar experience.

This ship is taking me far away < Ship being a metaphor for being in love
    Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die < So absorbed in it that you only think about your love, a love in which the speaker is uncertain if the beloved still feels anything themselves (they are "star-crossed"), mentally abandoning all of the people who you know love you (family, friends)

I will be chasing a starlight
Until the end of my life < starlight = true love, hope, happiness, etc. < This is especially meaningful to me because I actually have a tattoo of the image in this version of "The Star": ciromarchetti.com/ciromarchetti/… to represent exactly those things.

    Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive < The souls in question being all of the "romantics", hopefully including these two. Ignite = spark true love.

Now I'll never let you go
If you promised not to fade away < The promise in question not being an actual delivered promise; simply poetic license of "I'll never let you go if you never fade away" = "Regardless of what happens as long as your memory is still with me I will never let go of these feelings"

I just wanted to hold you in my arms < Possibly still more a metaphor for making and truly feeling the connection of mutual, everlasting love. Possibly literal, and therefore an exercise in understatement.

Our hopes and expectations, black holes and revelations < Both too perfectly abstract and multi-layered to try to reduce into any truly literal thought, and I think somehow completely self-explanatory in this context (Another beauty of the well-composed abstract)

So that's what it is to me anyway.

General Comment:Just listen to that piano part... wow! It's the most subtle part of the song and yet with out it, the song wouldn't be what it is. Please listen to the song but pay close attention to the piano. I know it has no words but it's saying sooo much! I'm not sure what it means. But I'm trying to figure it.

General Comment:So to me this son g goes like this:

"the people who cared if i live or die" = family

It sounds like a guy is madly in love with her "starlight" a girl who is making him drift away from his family and friends. The "ship" of love is taking him farther away. All that he want to do is love her, even though she takes him so far (move to different states/countries). As long as she never changes he will love her, even though deep down he knows that things will change (""hopes and expectations" end up in "black holes and revelations")and she will change, she will "fade" away.

A song about suicide love. Going so far out for a girl/guy even though you know that it will all eventually end in darkness.
