new music
new listening
not an attempt to understand something
that is said
for if something were being said
the sounds would be given the shapes of words
just an attention to the activity of sound
new means change the method
new means change the experience
and new experiences change man
whenever we hear sounds we are changed
we are no longer the same
after hearing certain sounds
and this is more the case
when we hear organized sounds
sounds organized by another human being
music
our entire system of values
of the things we accept to be true
is based on the visual sounds
you have to sign a paper because your word is not enough to be trusted
as a result the acoustic faculty in human beings has declined
as it has become possible to define a continuum between sounds and noises
completely new problems have come up when we compose or play intuitively
because we have no training whatsoever in balancing tones and noises
traditionally in western music
noises have been taboo
and there are precise reasons for this
it has become from began from the time when staff notations were introduced
traditionally in western music
noises have been taboo
and there are precise reasons for this
it began from the time when staff notations were introduced
and music could be noted in precise intervals for the first time
then it was mainly vocal music
some predominantly with vowels rather than consonants
if i sing a melody of consonants now, people would say it isn't music
we have no tradition of music composed in these sounds
and no notation for it
there you see how narrow our concept of music is
from having excluded consonants the noises
of course you find consonants in vocals music
but only in order to make a word comprehensible
thats the function of a consonant in our daily language
to clarify the meaning
but in a musical sense
consonants have no function other than as accents
"s, s"or "t" or "p" or "k"
cdto start or end sound clearly
i respond to sounds directly
sound is my air
whenever i deal with sounds they organize themselves, so to speak
they respond very well to me
and i to them

General Comment:Wow. After reading through all of these comments I am honestly amazed at how ignorant most of you are.

Why aren't you off listening to nickelback? What are you even doing listening to TSOAF...

This song is a tribute to a composer because members of TSOAF respect his idea of music and how open ended it is able to be. All that its saying is don't coop yourself up and decide that music has to sound one way or another, music is just a tool, its a paintbrush and a canvas for an artist.

Art is meant to be self expressive, express what you want, how you want. No one's opinion EXCEPT the artist himself matters or holds any real weight whatsoever. They didn't mean for you to listen to this song for fun everytime you put the album on, this is more of a one time message that they are EXPECTING you to skip over after you've heard it and taken its point in.

And to the pricks who think that TSOAF is "trying too hard to be different just for the sake of being different"... you need to die for being so shallow minded. They are creating art for themselves, and I seriously doubt that they give a shit about what goes on in modern pop culture any more. They're trying to be themselves. The only reason you're considering them to be "different" in the first place is because they don't fit the statistic, which in reality is just a BS trend that was created because people realized there was a lot of money to be made in the music industry.

Take TSOAF's music for what it is, don't bother even having an opinion because it doesn't matter, just accept it.

General Comment:I agree that the message behind the song is good, but that doesn't make it a good song; that makes it a smart song. I don't like this song for the simple fact that people don't want to give me a choice about it. It's just a matter of reactance. If I don't like this song, people will say I'm being ignorant. But if I do like it, then all is well. I just want some freedom of choice here. I listened to this song once and did not enjoy it, therefore; I will probably not listen to it again anytime soon. Thus, in my opinion, this is not a good song.

General Comment:i think the song was made to challenge views on music. i'm sure they knew the sound would be wierd and/or annoying to a majority of people, but the words are what they wanted to stress. therefore those that would understand the message would probably sit through the song and actually listen.

General Comment:in my mind.. this song is perfect.. its the opinion of a great composer on "new" "western" music.. and in my opinion the musical part of this song is exactly what stockhausen is talking about.. i think this song is soaf's interpretation of stockhausen, and whats wrong with music today.

for everyone that hates this song... u better change ur ipod back to fall out boy

General Comment:its not about being catchy. its about criticizing people narrow minded views on music.
its the exact opposite of what stereotypical music is.
music isnt something you can box up and label. nething can be music. it doesnt have to sound good to everyone as they are saying in the song.
    the song is a satire.
you people who are calling the song annoying and bad are exactly what this song is about.
    its bad for a reason.
if you actually listen the song is actually a song in a certain style that they are doing in a notation most people havent heard before.

i just find it funny hardly neone hear actually listened and read the lyrics. the lyrics to this song are the most straight forward in the entire album.
