I wanna see you tonight
What's the point?
All we do is fight
I've loved you
So long
I don't know who I'd be without

My head hurts
I wish I'd never woke up
I feel worse
than when S Club 7 broke up
I hate the day
It hates me
So does everybody else

I sit here drooling on my own again
and like a routine episode of Friends
What does it mean to be American?
Is it
feelings, coffee and
I'll be there for you?

Later on me and a bottle will hook up to have some fun
Then I'll call your house at twelve to let you know that I'm drunk
Say I'm sorry Mr C, I was just looking for your son
How are you, incidentally, do you know if he's out alone?
There is this book he lent to me something like seven months ago
I'm gonna burn it in the street be so kind as let him know
that I'm dealing
with this badly
and
could he please get back to me?

Since you've gone my only friends are Billy Bragg and the Jam
Though my time with you has got me feeling oh so k.d. lang
I think you're right about the New Kids on the Block
And I agree now Billy Joel does not rock
Wish I could tell you all the things that Woody Allen helps me see
How Annie Hall is starting to seem quite a lot like you and me
It took a while to come around to David Bowie's new CD
And it's much too late to give back your Magnetic Fields EP
Can I keep it
by my pillow?
Fucking loved it
How I long to tell you so

When I get to sleep I'll dream again of canopies and grapes
And wake shaking from the knowledge that the mattress holds your shape
I assume my phone is dead because it hasn't rung for months
If tomorrow is the funeral do you think that you could come?
I could give you back your music and your t-shirts and your socks
Walk to Jazz's house in SOHO cry into her letter box
Spend some time out to resuscitate my soul
Take up smoking and drink carrot juice and grow
Teach the mattress to expel you from its folds
Then dry my eyes and keep on walking til the motion makes me strong
Until one day i realise I don't remember that you're gone
We'll be strangers
who were lovers
I'll recover
It's so weird how time goes on

Song Meaning:actually, maybe i'm wrong about this but the mentioning of the funeral (If tomorrow is the funeral do you think that you could come?) if anyone knows Emmy's song "Edward is Dedward" she mentions in that song about a boy named Dan who she hasn't seen in about a year who she had a relationship with (and in the song, has sex with during the wake because she misses her friend, Ed)

I think this guy she's talking about could be Dan mentioned in the other song, how she hasn't seen him in ages, how she misses him.

Lyric Correction:For a start, I know for a fact that the title is Canopies and DRAPES, not grapes - I bought it off iTunes. And quite a few of these lyrics are wrong:

"ANOTHER routine episode of Friends" (not "and like a", it's sort of a run through her day)
"And I agree THAT Billy Joel does not rock"
"I'll dream again of canopies and DRAPES"
"And wake shaking IN the knowledge that the mattress holds your shape"
"RUN to Jazz's house in Soho"
"TAKE some time out to resuscitate my soul"
"Teach the mattress to ERASE you from its folds"
"Then dry my eyes and keep on MOVING 'til the motion makes me strong"

Song Meaning:This was the first song of Emmy's I heard, and it's lovely. I think, as others have said, it's pretty obviously about a bad break-up, but more than that it makes me think of the end of a really intense relationship, one that maybe she lost herself in ("I don't know who I'd be without...") and as result she clings to the things they had in common. (Hence all the music references, listing the comments she'd like to make about them to him if she could.)

It's like witnessing the various stages of a break-up, denial, displacement, grief, despair, and then eventually she begins to rediscover who she is as an individual. (The smoking, carrot juice and resuscitating her soul etc.)

Well that's just how I see it, and it's definitely one of my favourites. :D

General Comment:In the new version, "fucking loved it" is changed to "really loved it", and "walk to Jazz's house" is changed to "run to Jazz's house", and a few other minor changes.

General Comment:this is actually one of my favorite songs by emmy.

this one's a little obvious to me, everyone has different opinions on music, but to me it's about her getting over a bad breakup. she can't seem to handle it, she even calls his dad and sees if she could reach him, but the fact of the matter is that the guy is done with her.

but in the last verse (my favorite), she realizes that it's not so bad, that she'll get over it and they'll just become strangers who were lovers. and yes, it's weird how time goes by.

General Comment:I love the 'drink carrot juice and grow' bit. Though, the lyrics are a bit wrong on this, i think it's 'incidentally, do you know if he's out of love?' Maybe about a boy, who fell in love with someone else and dumped her.

General Comment:i adore this song, i know emmy is so often funny but this song just defines the balance between intelligent comedy ("...and i'll be there for you") and neat tunefullness

    wooo emmy!

General Comment:I agree that this song is about living without your lover after a breakup, not about death. I think this is Emmy's worst song, it annoys me.

General Comment:Beautiful song, so gentle and pointed at the same time, like all her work.

Tiny point - i'm fairly sure it's "Jazz's house in Soho" not "SOHO". Soho is a part of London, SOHO is "So/uth of Ho/uston St" in NYC. I think this is likely coz A) she's British and B) she played a gig in London and said hello to Jazz, who she said was in the audience.

    Yaay Emmy!
