Lyrics for Consolation Prizes as interpreted by Manberu

Consolation Prizes Lyrics
It started all in early september
When my godgiven little became a lot older Goodbyes seal my broken heart Hold on to your teardrops, you got a long way to go

Did you get older doing nothing today?
Don't you wanna stop complaining?
If one is easy then hard is two
Noone knows where you\'re heading to
Once my private collection, always betting on you

No consolation prizes
Spit out your lies & chewing gum
Cut off your hair yeah that's it!
If you look like that I swear I\'m gonna love you more

I thought about this for a long time
Never had the chance to try and make it better My heart is waiting for a new you And there's no other option on the schedule

Love like ours should never die with years Once you start you can\'t ever go backwards Cause if dark is one then bright is two Noone knows where we\'re heading to No matter what it takes, never give up on you

I want you to change it all
I am gonna make it better

No consolation prizes
Spit out your lies & chewing gum
Cut off your hair yeah that's it!
If you look like that I swear I\'m gonna love you more

No consolation prizes
Spit out your lies & chewing gum
Cut off your hair yeah that's it!
If you look like that I swear I'm gonna love you more

I don't really get what the song is about but I love the line "My heart is waiting for a new you." This song is really good, it puts me in a happy mood.. even though some of the lyrics don't seem very positive.

"Did you get older doing nothing today?"

I think this song is about a guy who's in a relationship with a girl that's changed and he doesn't like the new her. They've taken a break and he's saying he'll love her more when she changes back to who she was.

Not sure if that's correct though!

Gun song though!! Phoenix are awesome =].

i love phoenix, this ong is great - so catchy. It doesnt matter that their lyrics dont mean much, all their songs are so upbeat and catchy it makes me sing along and feel summery - french pop rules.

I think that Lou-Lou is correct as far as thinking that the guy does no like the way his godgiven has evolved; he does not like the current her. However I do not think that he wants her to be the old her as Lou-Lou wrote, rather I think he wants her to better herself ("change it all") and for their relationship to be #1 ("I am gonna make it better"), no consolation prizes.

I love this song too! But I think the comments on it's meaning are not hitting the mark. The speaker broke up with his mate, a girlfriend prolly but it's gender neutral ("Goodbyes seal my broken heart"). Also, you only get a "consolation prize" until you lose a game or in this case a partner.

In the first half, he's taunting her about her complaining and crying about being broken up. The chorus confirms this: he's making fun of her juvenile reaction of cutting her hair. A stereotypical reaction to breaking up is you want to change how you look so the other person's jealous. But to him it doesn't matter what she does, he'll just "love her more."

in the second half, he's thought that maybe he didn't do enough to save the relationship but now he can't do anything except wait until his ex comes around and wants to be with him again (both "there's no other option on the schedule" and "No matter what it takes, never give up on you.") Lastly, he says "I want you to change it all" meaning do whatever she has to do to get over the breakup because he'll be there to "make it better" or be her "consolation prize!"

I hope this long essay written while this writer should be working on something else helps!

Here it goes:

The song is written as being directed to a lover/romantic partner, though I think the main theme is not so much about relationships as the concept of adulthood, aging, and taking full responsibility for your own life. "You" is thinking and behaving like a youth, even though she (?) feels that time is catching up with her more and more. The "I" has perhaps finished the transition from youth to adulthood, anyway he is eager for "you" to go through with that transition, since she is not living up to her potential, only complaining, brooding her fading youth and growing more and more panic-stricken by the thought of trying to realise her full potential - and itīs kind of hard to love a person with that kind of mindset.

The consolation prizes-thing is a bit ambiguous but I reckon it's means something like this: if you're in a relationship with someone and that person is unhappy and unfulfilled, it's really hard to feel like you are more than a consolation prize to that person. If you really boil it down i suppose it's a kind of "in order to love another person, you must first love yourself"-sentiment. That, or "I" is saying that he just won't give up on his "godgiven little" and dump her because they've grown apart - that is to take the easy way out and go for the consolation prize...

I agree with the first part of what Hantakun said. The guy is transitioning to adulthood. He's growing older and more mature -My godgiven little became a little older.- Thus he ended his pubescent relationship with his girlfriend even though it broke his heart.

To him, the goodbye was a fitting closure but it was a whole different matter for the girl whose reaction was as childish as one could get. Hence the cutting of the hair, denials and lingering. -spit out your lies(Denial) and chewing gum(Lingering); cut off your hair yeah that's it!(Rashness); if you look like that i swear...(Sarcasm)-

(The last line being a sarcastic anecdote of her childishness and unwillingness to move on.)

He goes on further by saying that the decision is deliberate and that he's thought about it for a long time. He's ready for a different kind of love. One that's grown up and adult. He explains that he must move on and that he can't go backwards which is what he would be doing should he choose to stay with her.

He then explains that this goodbye will make her better. It will help her grow up and move onto things she is yet to discover.

Basically, "consolation prize" is the girl's excuse not to move on. She demands it because she doesn't want to feel like she lost or that the guy got the better bargain in the whole relationship. It is the evidence of her total immaturity.

Great song! This album has a more cohesive and consistent sound compared to the previous two(United&Alphabetical)
