I don't think this song is about kiedis's enjoyment of drugs since he's been clean for several years. Either way though, I think this is probably my favorite song off the new album.

Anthony has specifically said that thsi song is nothing to do with any drugs of any kind, although he also says that the guy who types up his lyrics thought it was about drugs and raised an eyebrow. Anthony assured him that he hasn't been on a cocaine binge. The interview that says this is either in Kerrang or Q magazine. I can't remember which one.

i've heard charlie used as a slang word for cocaine before. AND I think that this song IS about cocaine, and i'm going to just say it, but it could possibly mean that anthony kiedis is having another relapse. i mean, he's relapsed many times before, what should stop him from doing it again. and he has left hints on other albums before that he was having a relapse. also in vietnam, charlie was the "enemy", but I don't know i'm probably reading way too far into this song. it probably really is about creativity and inspiration or whatever, but it's just an idea to think about!

That's a pretty good theory, alaguna. It does sound like cocaine when you look at the lyrics with that in your head.

Oh, and if you don't know, "Get the message on Flea's fist" is "love". Flea has "love" tatooed on his fist one letter on each finger. (I think it's love, please correct me if I'm wrong.

If any of you have read Anthony's book, he has been clean and sober since 2000. Even though this song MIGHT be about drugs, I highly doubt he is having a relapse. He's very adament about staying clean and has been for a little over 6 years so somehow I doubt it's talking about a relapse. And just because you write a song about something that MIGHT be cocaine, doesn't mean you're doing the drug.

Charlie = Cocaine
Little woman = One of John's many dealers
Flea's wrist = The mark wear he shoots coke
Pick up that smell = The smell of cocaine
Run like hell = Running away because he is afraid of slipping back into the patterns he has slipped into so many times before, or maybe running towards the cocaine to fulfill his desire

First of all, it's fleas fist, try turning off the selective hearing. The mark where he shoots coke? wtf are you talking about?
As mentioned above, flea has LOVE tattoed on each fist.
Secondly, If it was about cocaine, he would have just said its about his previous binges and not a current one.

Anthony said that Charlie is your imagination but that it could also be a girl or cocaine, drugs were not the inspiration for the song.

Even if "charlie" is a slang word for cocaine, I don't think this song is about drugs...or rather I hope it isn't. It would change the tone of the music for me, if you know what I mean. Anway...I was thinking, and Alanis Morissette's song, "Mary Jane" has nothing to do with marijuana, but yet the name would elude to that...so just because the songs called Charlie doesn't really imply anything.
But at this point I wouldn't be suprised if the song is about or not about cocaine.
Either way it'sd an AMAZING song that's awesome to groove to :)
