Was losing all my friends.
Was losing them to drinking and to driving.
Was losing all my friends, but I got them back.
I am on the mend.
At least now I can say that I am trying.
And I hope you will forget things I still lack.
Yeah. Yeah.
Is it in you now,
To barely hear the truth that you have spoken?
Twisted up by knaves,
To make a trap for fools.
Is it in you now,
To watch the things you gave your life to broken?
And stoop and build them up with warn out tools.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. (Oh.)
Yeah.
Nothing gets so bad,
A whisper from your father couldn't fix it.
Your whisper's like a bridge, he's a river span.
Take all that you have,
And turn it into something you were missing.
Somebody threw that brick, shattered all your plans.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. (Oh.)
Yeah.
Time to get the seeds into the cold ground.
It takes a while to grow anything,
Before it's coming to the end, yeah.
Before you put my body in the cold ground,
Take some time to warm it with your hand,
Before it's coming to an end, yeah.
It's coming to an end, yeah.
It's coming to an end, yeah.
Do you miss the blend,
Colors she left in your black and white field?
Do you feel condemned just being there?
I am not your friend.
I am just a man who knows how to feel.
I am not your friend.
I'm not your lover.
I'm not your family.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. (Oh.)
Yeah.
Time to get the seeds into the cold ground.
It takes a while to grow anything,

Was losing all my friends.
Was losing them to drinking and to driving.
Was losing all my friends, but I got them back.
(I had bad friends, but I managed to reach out and get new ones to better myself)
I am on the mend.
At least now I can say that I am trying.
And I hope you will forget things I still lack.
(there are still flaws in me but im fixing myself)
Is it in you now,
To barely hear the truth that you have spoken?
Twisted up by knaves,
To make a trap for fools
(from Rudyard Kipling's poem "If", which i think is about making yourself a better person)
Is it in you now,
To watch the things you gave your life to broken?
And stoop and build them up with warn out tools
(Addressing the listeners: Do you have the ability to have all that you care about shatter, and still pick things back up and make new better things out of the mess the situation)
Nothing gets so bad,
A whisper from your father couldn't fix it.
He whisper's like a bridge, it's a river span.
(nothing is unfixable, it may be long off "a rivers distance" but its still possible)
Take all that you have,
And turn it into something you would miss if
Somebody threw that brick, shattered all your plans.
(Take all the bad things and make them good/better again. Make them into something that you love and would miss)
Time to get the seeds into the cold ground.
It takes a while to grow anything,
Before it's coming to the end, yeah.
(Its time to start trying to make new better things, in the "cold ground." aka out of the terrible situation. It might take awhile but start before its too late)
Before you put my body in the cold ground,
Take some time to warm it with your hand,
Before it's coming to an end, yeah.
(Before you give up and it becomes too late try to make something better, or warmer)
It's coming to an end, yeah.
(Hurry, dont let it be too late to start)
Do you miss the blend, of colors she left in your black and white field?
Do you feel condemned just being there?
(this is talking about specific common bad situations in which you feel that things fell apart. If a partner left you: do you miss the warm "colors" that the partner gave you, when before you met them you felt dark and gray?
and the next is self explanatory, do you feel condemned?).
I am not your friend.
I am just a man who knows how to feel.
I am not your friend.
I'm not your lover.
I'm not your family.
(this is referring to the breakup mentioned earlier. It is the first step that you need to take to move on and start to make something better out of this bad situation. Meaning cut yourself off, say how you don't need them and you are a good person)
FIrst song on a new album. New sound. Totally. New themes. Brand New has moved on from emo, high pitched singing and onto more 'grown up' vocal styles 'ie. Jesse starting to shout/sing - this difference is more clear upon listening to Daisy after this'.
The lyrics to this mean exactly how it sounds from previous albums. Grown up. Moving on from friends. Sowing old seeds. New life, better life. Taking what was once everything ("take all that you have and turn it into something you won't miss it" or whatever) and coming to terms with the fact that it's nothing. Lacey has grown up. So has his music. This song is showing all that through both it's style and lyrics.
In short, this song is about moving on and growing up. Sowing old seeds. But not in such a direct sense. The entire album revolves around this concept.
i am not your friend
im not your lover
im not your family
im not that fucking great
never will be
in love
its all just a fucking illusion
most fail to see
and if you see it
its the worst awakening
so dont wake up
better to stay a fool
It IS "to BEAR TO hear the truth that you have spoken"
It's a quote from Rudyard Kipling's poem "If"

I was losing them to drinking and to driving

But I got 'em back

And I hope you will forget
Things I still lack
Yeah
Yeah
And is it in you now,
To bear to hear the truth that you have spoken
Twisted up by knaves
To make a trap for fools?
And is it in you now,
To watch the things you gave your life to, broken?
And stoop then build them up
With worn out tools?
Yeah! Yeah!
Yeah-Yeah-ahhh
Yeah!
Nothing gets so bad
A whisper from your father couldn't fix if
He whispers like a bridge
Whos river's span
Now take all that you have
And turn it into something you would miss if
Somebody threw that brick
And shattered all your plans
Yeah! Yeah!
Yeah-Yeah-ahhh
Yeah!
(Now) Time to get the seeds into the cold ground [in slow-mo i don't hear 'now' but in realtime I do. Pretty sure it's not, 'no', I can hear 'i'm trying to...' more than 'no time to...']
It takes a while to grow anything.
Before it's coming to an end, yeah
Before you put my body in the cold ground
Take some time and warm it with your hands
Before it's coming to an end, yeah
it's coming to an end
Do you miss the blend
Of colour she left in your black and white field?
And do you feel condemned
Just for being there?
I am not your friend, I am just a man who knows how to feel
I am not your friend, I'm not your lover, I'm not your family, Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah-Yeah-ahhh
Yeah!
(Now?) Time to get the seeds into the cold ground
It takes a while to grow anything,
before it's coming to an end, yeah.
If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master; If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -- Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son!"
Kipling
The beginning of the song seems to be pointing at this, because he is talking about losing people in his life, not necessarily by death or anything, just by growing apart by drinking, or when he mentions driving, maybe he is meaning driving away, as in leaving.
After this is going on, he is saying he will try to make up for things he can't do, or doesn't have that the person would like him to have.
I'm not too sure of the meaning when he says "your whispers like bridge..." unless he is saying the two go together? idk
"somebody threw that brick..." is prolly one of my favourite parts of the song. here, when he says "Take all that you have..." he's saying that if nothing is going right for you, try to make up for it with what you do have and the brick part is basically saying that anything can suddenly happen to change what you thought you had going (or not going) for you.
I think the rest of the song is pretty self explanatory, since one part of it is from a well-known poem & the "blend of colours" part is about missing something that brought excitement and emotion into his life and now it's gone so he is feeling blank and empty.
that's just my opinion of the song. :/
