When I was surrounded by the world
You were the only one who came
And you were the only one astounded
Which kept me grounded
As the other girls thrashed my very name

Then I looked over
Just in time to see her smiling back at me
And saying everything's OK
As long as you're inside my blue veins
Your blue veins

Yeah and the feeling that you gave me
No matter what I do or where I go
It always will remain
And those who would enslave me to get to me must get past you and will have no luck
'Cause you'll protect me from all pain

The most beautiful, yeah the most beautiful thing cause anything else can't compare
Must be the blood that's running through your blue veins
Your blue veins

[Strange part in reverse]

Your blue veins

And I know you won't deceive me
Like the rest and there's nothing you need to explain
You always were the first one to believe me
When I said to you girl
I think it's gonna rain
But I could be wrong

Yeah but all of these things
All these things
They're all truly nice but ain't nothing
Ain't nothing compared to the love that's running through your little blue veins

Your blue veins

My Interpretation:what the backwards words are as best as i can make out....

There is no Way that it is Possible!
but I Must AttempT to go an Explain. Yeah.
that i Don't Want the Woman Believe me! yeAH!
gOd Is it a Curse she found? YEah ahah.. umm
    I think Its Gunna Rain!

Scissors333above might be right on some things but i spent a lot of time trying to figure this out and pretty much think i found the right combination of words. at the pinnacle is i want to trust what i heard were actually what he says, or are we really making words out to what we want them to be? do all the beginnings/ends of the words fall off? i think that when people listen to backwards music, it is easier for them to hear what they want to hear, maybe. at first i thought he was saying "that i don't want the woman to leave me" and also heard "god's gonna curse the thing she found". don't listen to Maryewein, she is nowhere near the truth, but Wingdingo might be onto something with the first of all" and come live the best of all".

this song, i believe, is talking about the bluebloods. "must be the blood running through your blue veins". Its also about the first girl to believe in him astounded. "the first one to believe me". i do believe this song was is about his first sugar mama. hypothetically, he was playing music at a dive bar and was not getting appreciation in ways that truly help, a foxy older lady with bu-ku bucks and connects wanted him to be her pony. she took him around and introduced him to the red carpet... and once you are there, there is no going back. when he writes, "all those who would enslave me/employ me" (semantics) had to get past the money he encountered running through the blue veins... the old and extremely wealthy circuit of unoccupied wives. by this time in his career, he is wealthy, has an airplane. he has realized that the pain that used to inflict his heart when he had not much brain stimulus (specifically the activities that money afford and other horny wealthy women) really doesnt matter anymore, because the blue bloods have and he is in for life. and now that he lives with/around/inside entertainment chasing, the rains source starts somewhere else...

General Comment:I think this song is about very strong love. about a girl who always supports him
and takes him serious in everything he does. He is so much in love with her
that the "most beautiful thing" and the thing that makes him so content is the simple
"blood in her blue veins" which means the life that she has in her. The simple fact
that she is alive. That she is who she is

Song Meaning:this song is most definately not about heroin or any other drugs... it can either about a girl or music itself... "Yeah and the feeling that you gave me, No matter what I do or where I go it always will remain And those who would enslave me to get to me must get past you and will have no luck Cause you'll protect me from all pain" says to me "it doesnt matter what you throw at me... as long as i have music you cant take me down"

    General Comment:Reversed Part:

There is nowhere the best of all
But I'm just as cool as the rain, yeah
Then all thoughts I want will leave me, yeah
God! this lil's the best I found, yeah,
    I think it's gonna rain.

    That's what I'm listening!! :)

General Comment:This song is about his wife Karen Elson. They met during the filming of the blue orchid video, a time period in which Jack was suffering a lot of alienation from the world. He didn't want to succumb into the cliche ways of a rock star, aching to stay true to his working class origins. In live versions of this song, you can hear jack modifying the lyrics from the first chorus to "then, i looked over, just in time, to see her little redhead smiling back at me and saying everything's OK".His wife Karen has strikingly wonderful red hair, they fell in love so quickly, that they got married 3 weeks into knowing each other in an amazonian jungle. I don't know and I don't care if Jack is into drugs, but I can tell that this is obviously a love song, the most heartfelt he's probably written in his life.

General Comment:This song could easily about either heroin OR love. Because they both essentially do the same thing to your brain. Science mofo :)

I can relate to both, I've experienced what this song is talking about from IV heroin abuse AND from falling in love. I can see how people would like to lean toward it being about heroin because of the title and stuff. Also if it was written about a relationship, it definitely sounds like a "dependent" relationship.

General Comment:Guys this doesn't sound like anything to do with heroin, except maybe the riff.
    I think it's actually a love song.

General Comment:i LOVE this song. It's one of whites best songs ever!

I think that the raconteurs has been good in this song. the text is perfect. it makes sense in every way. should it be a love song? should it be about drugs? or if it was about his little daughter? there are several ways to see the point!
I think i would choose to see it as though it were his daughter, because she is his own flesh and blood(all these thing, they are truly nice, they aint nothing.. aint nothing compared to the blood there's running through your 'little' blue veins), and she may means everything for him. genius if the song had been written for her?? :)the ra

General Comment:There's a live version of this where jack's really pissed off while playing it, and he does a really long and sad solo. In the end of the song he throws his guitar on the floor, screams the last lines like he's in deep pain and leaves the stage.
When he wrote this song he probably thought he could really trust someone, and she let him down. He played it sadly because she lied to him, like everyone else.
I may be wrong, but it's what it seems.
If anyone wants to see this version, its on youtube. The Racounters Live Bonnaroo 2008 or something.

General Comment:just a girl that he puts all his trust into for no good reason... but it's only her that can help him because her blood is the only blood he's known, trusted, and loved

that sounded kind of weird, but it makes sense to me haha

great great great song; the reversed part doesn't even bother me because i think it just adds to the confusion, anger, and helplessness the narrator is feeling.
