Lyrics for The Pot as interpreted by FireWorx

The Pot Lyrics
who are you to wave your finger? you musta been outta your head.
eye hole deep in muddy waters. You practically raised the dead.
rob the grave to snow the cradle then burn the evidence down.
soap box house of cards and glass so don't go tossin' your stones around.

you musta been high

foot in mouth and head up ass, so watcha talking bout?
difficult to dance round this one till you pull it out. boy

you musta been so high.

steal, borrow, refer, save your shady inference.
kangaroo done hung the jury with the innocent.

now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. (musta) got lemon juice
up in your eye when you pissed all over my black kettle.

you musta been high.

who are you to wave your finger? so full of it.
eye balls deep in muddy waters. fuckin hypocrite.
liar, lawyer, mirror show me. what's the difference?
kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent.

now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. (musta) got lemon juice
up in your eye when you pissed all over my black kettle.

you musta been high.

So who are you to wave your finger?
who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
you must have been outta your mind.
Weepin shades of indigo.

liar, lawyer, mirror for ya. what's the difference?
kangaroo be stoned. he's guilty as the government.

now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. (musta) got lemon juice
up in your eye when you pissed all over my black kettle.

you musta been high.

eye balls deep in muddy waters.
you're balls deep in muddy waters.
Ganja, please, you must have been outta your mind.

well, these lyrics are pretty far from accurate... but it's nice someone took a stab at it this early... better than i could have done, so good job FireWorx...

still not sure what this song's about... it seems to be criticizing lazy stoners... or it might be trash talking the self righteous retards who have their own ideas about what Tool 'should' sound like...

who knows, i'll wait until the lyrics are a bit more clear to pass judgment

he actually says "don't go tossin' your stones around" and i don't think this song is as much criticizing lazy stoners as it is about all the anti-marijuana advertisements (aka public service announcements) and the general policies governing pot. maybe i'm wrong, but that's what i've got with the couple of listens i've had and reading the lyrics once over.

He's calling out all the hypocrites that criticize stoners, but are just as lazy and worthless. Druggies might be liars, but so are lawyers, there isn't much difference.

People get up on a soapbox and preach about what everyone is doing wrong, but they are standing in a flimsy house of cards. And people that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, because eventually they get back what they've dished out.

That's a clear reference when he talks about pissing on the black kettle. Ever hear the phrase, 'calling the kettle black'? You see everyone else's faults but not your own.

Rock Hawk has it right. The pot calling the Kettle black. Its all about hypocrisy.

specifics:
Black Kettle = Chief of the Southern Cheyenne (also listen to the following song)
Kangaroo = the kangaroo court in Gitmo
Muddy waters = Oil (raising the dead)? / Katrina (actual muddy waters)?

"Who are you to wave your finger? So full of it."

After reading the lyrics through a few more times, I want to say that I think it isn't limited to just the drug issue. I don't think that is the main focus. The title is a double meaning, marijuana referrence and it goes back to the 'pot and kettle' thing.

ack, Don't like this version of the lyrics all the much, and I think the part where it says "so full of it" might be subordinate

Trexor,

If you go back and read my post, you might get some insight as to what we are talking about here. The song is about hypocrisy, not marijuana. Marijuana was just a vehicle or literary device for Maynard to talk about people committing atrocities and hiding behind laws or positions of power. Diverting our attention from their wrong doings by waving fingers and keeping the looking glass pointed the other way, and policing us.
Do yourself a favor and read up Kangaroo courts and what is happening in Guantanamo Bay, or find out who Black Kettle is and what happened to him. Why was he killed? Think about how that might relate to what is happening right now in the world. How that might relate to the US war in Iraq.

I know this stuff is tough for a 19 year old such as yourself to digest, and may include a sort of textual analysis you are not familiar with, but please stop spamming the TooL boards. Maynard has been writing theses types of songs long before you were aware TooL existed.

nonetospeakof. can we say pretentious asshole? you'll have room to talk later. spamming? i'm my opinion, buying these songs and commenting on how "amazing" they are should be qualified as spamming. and obviously, i already understood your post. "calling the kettle black"= hypocrisy. who didn't understand? and considering lateralus was about unity, spiritual ascension, awareness, and pretty much, the meaning of life, i don't consider a song about guantanamo bay or the war on iraq to be "deep". and i'm sure any 19 year old moron can fathom anything that you have to say, dipshit.

Trexor. I still think we are misunderstanding each other. You are the only person calling this track "deep." All i was doing was pointing out that its subject matter was more than "LIKE. omfg! calling the kettle black and marijuana!" This album, and this song, are throwbacks to older TooL, stuff others of us have grown up on. The band specifically stated that it would be more angry and less enlightened, not a Lateralus 2. So just get over it and enjoy the music.

That "pretentious asshole" and "dipshit" stuff cut me deep trexor.... deep...like "omfg! calling the kettle black and marijuana" deep.

sarcastically deep. i wouldn't recommend going around treating every 19 year old like they're below you or are incapable of understanding a song because they haven't been listening to the band since it started(and sucked)

WIKIPEDIA

Skepticism that 10,000 Days is the actual title has become void since the album has already been released in some European countries.

Imagine how ignorant Trexor feels after saying for so long now that the leak was fake. If you have been listening to Tool all along and know their style, than you wouldn't have doubted this cd for a second. This is 100 % genuine Tool and the cd is amazing.

hey MxMave... you do know maynard had a part of RATM's first CD... he was also quite vocal about voting out George Bush during APC's last tour... his political leanings are clear...

that being said, who else loves the bass on this song... justin really stepped it up on this album...

oh god, no... you're not saying that a majority of Tool's fans probobly smoke cannabis are you...

please, jesus, no, i sure hope no one attatches a label to a band like Tool... i'm sure they'd be devestated...

fuck man, you seem more concerned about what people will think about you if they catch you listening to this than how good this song is...

this song kicks ass... the heavy bass lead reminds me of opiate

schedule I?

I like that "the pot" refers to the person being sung to.

"You’re a liar, lawyer, mirror show me what’s the difference."
mirror seems to add a lot to that line.

is snow in refrence to the holocaust?

Who is it that calls the kettle black? The pot.

About hypocricy, blind opinionism and general stupidity. It could refer to any situation - From GW Bush preaching good and evil, to the blind accusations of the conspiracists who would oppose him... general soapbox behaviour.

Very tasty song, loving the album
x*x
